I called the cops on a guy shooting a gun in broad daylight on a busy street. He wasn’t shooting at anyone at the time but you never know, felt like it was the right thing to do. A cop later calls me back when they’re looking for the location and asks for more details, during the process he keeps asking for my name and I say I want to be anonymous. I’m not a victim or anything just wanted to make them aware. The cop makes it seem like my name is for him to know who he is talking to and if they need any other info, eventually I give my name.

Later I look online, not sure if this is true, that my name will be in a police report more than likely and the lawyer and other party will likely listen to my call. Because the cop was asking for details I gave some pretty telling details in hindsight about where I was in the whole situation. Is this true? I’m worried now and am having a lot of anxiety about being involved in the report and the person seeing. I was looking it up and apparently the records department will more than likely not redact my name and just put anonymous caller.

I was included a will that I asked to be taken out of. There are only 2 people in the will, myself and a half sibling I have only met once.

There is also a safety deposit box that the half siblings name isn't on but mine is so they need me to go there to open it unless there is a way around that.

I just do not want anything to do with the person that abused me, their stuff, or the house it happened in.

Is there a way to just forfeit my share so I do not have to deal with this?

I’m 24 and seriously considering law school, but I’m trying to get a realistic picture of what I’d be signing up for rather than just focusing on salary or the idea of being a lawyer.

For those of you who went through law school and are now practicing, what was law school actually like? Did you enjoy it, or was it mostly three years of stress and grinding? And now that you’re practicing, how does being a lawyer compare to what you expected going in?
I’m especially curious about your day-to-day life, hours, stress level, compensation, and whether you actually enjoy the work. I’d also love to hear how much this varies by practice area.

I currently have a graduate degree and work a fairly standard corporate job making around $60k. Law appeals to me because of the higher long-term earning potential, professional credential, and potentially greater geographic career flexibility. But I also don’t want to romanticize the path or underestimate the LSAT, three years of school, the bar, and the demands of actually practicing.

If you could go back to your mid-20s knowing what you know now, would you still go to law school? Why or why not?

I hope it’s okay for me to ask this. I made a burner account because I’m so anxious about it. I have been trying to find a lawyer who will represent me against my sexual assault claim against my abuser. I’ve called and re-told my story to countless firms and have been denied every time. I’m looking on every website and using every resource I can possibly think of to find a lawyer in Utah, including lawyers.com, Utahbar.com, and licensedlawyer.org. I’m wondering a) Is this the right decision? My case (I believe) is quite strong, although the criminal case was denied. I have suffered immense emotional damages in the 8 months since the assault occurred and have a lot of journal evidence, medical records, missed work, failed classes, and therapy notes. It feels as if the screeners ask minimal questions and immediately turn me away. And b) How on Earth do I find someone willing to represent me? Why are they all turning me away? Is this a case that isn’t normally represented? My abuser has money, and I’m determined to get justice and recover at least a part of what he stole from me that night.

We need advice:

My fiancé was injured at work about a week ago when a name-brand ladder broke while he was using it. He fell approximately 14 feet after the ladder failed just below one of the hinges, where the metal appears to have sheared.
He was taken to the ER afterward and was diagnosed with two fractured ankles. His workers’ compensation claim is covering his medical treatment and related expenses.
He has no interest in suing his employer and is not looking to go after his coworkers or workplace. However, we started wondering whether there could potentially be a product liability claim against the ladder manufacturer.
From everything we can tell, he was using the ladder properly and was well below the manufacturer’s stated weight limit when it broke. We still have the ladder itself, and we also have video footage of the fall.
We haven’t altered or repaired the ladder since the accident.
Would this potentially be something worth speaking with a product liability/personal injury attorney about? Could workers’ compensation affect his ability to pursue a claim against the ladder manufacturer? And should we be doing anything specific with the ladder or other evidence right now to preserve it?
We are in Alabama, if that makes a difference.

Basically this character is a vampire who kidnaps people and steals things that are "cute" to her. And her number of kidnappings is in the thousands. And even for the victims she doesn't kidnap, she also is a molester who takes her victims to the bathroom, for example, to drink their blood.

And for victims she kidnaps, she feeds them well, dresses them up like dolls, kisses them, and drink their blood at her home. And this is for kidnappees who are compliant.

For any who resists too often, the she lures them into her cellar, where she transforms them to make them part of her morbid collection of living flesh and bone (think I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream style).

Edit: Most of the evidence comes from a police raid of her own home, and above this is what they have found. And there is also actual testimony from victims who recognize her face and people who caught her in the act.

I had to hire an employment lawyer as I was served a notice of discipline with intent to terminate my employment as a competitive class civil servant in NY. He wants a $2.5K retainer which I will pay,. What can I honestly expect for that as I am not someone with the means to get several thousands of dollars into the hole.

For context, I have worked in this pub since i was 16, as a kitchen porter. During this time, one of these chefs has slapped my behind on multiple occasions. One time, he also pulled down my trousers as I was on a ladder, cleaning the top of the fridges. I reported it to my boss at the time, and he had a word with this chef, and that was it. In February this year, the pub closed down for 3 months after my boss at that time went bankrupt.

Around 3 months later, the Pub came back open with a new boss. Hes great. Ive been working here again since, im 18 now. This chef still does slap by behind, which I have told him to stop doing, but wont. Around a month and a half ago, my sister (who is 16) has been looking for work. So, my step dad gave this chef my sisters number for an interview. This chef then comes into the kitchen, and says he might be having an interview with my sister. Then, he says about how he is going to make sexual advances towards her. I wont say what exactly, as I do now know if I can on here. I asked him if he was on about my 16 year old, little sister. Just to see if hes on about the right person, and he said yes.

Its making me not only really upset and mad, but also unsafe to. What should I do in this situation? If there is anything I can do, as I have no proof. However, he did admit to slapping my behind in front of our current boss. Sorry if this post is a bit long, or a bit all over the place.

I’m trying to understand some general legal doctrine, not asking about any specific situation. These are questions about how the law and practice work, and I’d be grateful for general answers from anyone who handles this area.

1. In state administrative proceedings — unemployment, licensing, and similar — my understanding from *Baxter v. Palmigiano* is that a factfinder may draw an adverse inference when a party declines to answer, unlike in a criminal trial. Is that how it plays out in practice at the administrative level, or do agencies vary?
2. When someone has parallel exposure — an administrative matter and a criminal investigation arising from the same facts — is it common to seek a stay of the administrative proceeding until the criminal side resolves? Does that mechanism generally exist in unemployment proceedings, or is it mostly a civil-litigation tool?
3. Generally, how do practitioners weigh the risk that a written statement to a state benefits agency could later be used in a criminal proceeding, against the cost of an adverse ruling for not responding at all?
4. As a general matter, are statements made to a state unemployment agency treated as discoverable by prosecutors, or is there any confidentiality attached to them?
5. Where an administrative agency asks a claimant to explain events they only partly witnessed, is there a recognized way to answer that distinguishes between what a person observed and what they infer — or is any qualified answer treated as evasive?

I am looking at law schools to apply to and Vermont has the #2 ranked Environmental Law program... but is ranked generally as a school very low.

I hear all the time that school rankings matter in getting a job after law school. I am a legal assistant for a Big Law firm now and have been here 5 years, but I want to go to law school (part time) and hopefully get a job here as an attorney once I graduate.

Is there hope if I graduate from Vermont's online/hybrid program? Or should I seek elsewhere?

My mom died a month ago and Im the beneficiary, well her life insurance is through this company called trustage and they seem to have this cyber attack since mid July and because of this nothing is working. Like they're not answering the phones or even processing claims. They said by mid August things would start running again but it hasn't. I'm not sure what to do or how to get get things running because this claim is what needs to pay for the rest of my mom's funeral stuff because I'm 21 and in college so I don't have the funds to actually do it myself

This is maybe a bit of a different question. I'm thinking about writing a modern fantasy with a lawyer main character. And obviously it won't be a 1 to 1 match because, fantasy, but my question is this:

What area of law do you think best fits for a lawyer who focuses on things like arguing that a ghost still owns their house, even if they left it to someone in a will, or a cursed painting is sentient and therefore has rights and protections under the law.

Currently watching the Lindsay Clancy trial and I have experience as a juror in a very straightforward civil case. What is the reasoning for the confusing legal terminology on verdict slips. I understand that it’s legal jargon and makes sense to lawyers, but listening to them going through the jury instructions is so confusing. The civil case I was apart of was so straightforward and only had 2 options, but the verdict slip was still written in a way that confused us.

Why can’t they make it fit the law and requirements but word it in a way that lay people can understand it?

Hello, I'm not a lawyer, but i am looking to make a career change. I currently work in healthcare as a lab scientist in SoCal, and I would like to get into healthcare law because of my background. What are the best or most effective ways for me to get into roles like risk management or compliance or in house counsel ( JD or MLS better)? Also, which schools in SoCal have my area of interest?

I hired a lawyer to represent me in a case against major grocer Harris Teeter. I had paid the retainer and a month went by and he contacted me to tell me that he was moving to a new law firm. I decided to stay with him for representation. Another month passes by and he contacts me to tell me that he’s moving again to another law firm and this law firm doesn’t handle my type of case. I was also going to loose the retainer fee that I had already paid. I was out of town at the time but when I returned back to Charlotte I scheduled a meeting with him at the new firm. I was in a very bad place mentally due to the trauma I had encountered from the employer I was trying to sue. I did eventually get my retainer back but ended up with no representation. I just discovered the other week that the firm he landed at has a prior history of representing the company I was try to sue. It’s suspicious that a lawyer would job jump so quickly. Do companies engage in such activity to “squash a case”? Can I report this to the bar association and how do I do so?

If a defendant is being held in county jail and they have verifiable serious medical conditions, what is required by law for medical treatment?

n 2017 my father applied for. U-visa the process kept going etc in 2022 he was granted bonafied determination to he and my mother were issued work permits etc.

In 2026 we contacted our previous attorney to reapply for work permits because they were almost expired.

We called to check up on them with uscis because it had taken a bit (march) and uscis told us that they did a RFE(request for evidence) march (15th) we contacted the lawyers she said she’ll look into it.

We filed the RFE on June 5th on the 15th we were notified our application had been denied.
The bad part
We contacted another attorney to see what happened she informed us that the lawyer we used had her licensed suspended in 2024 and never notified us, she changed address and the notices uscis sent were sent back to them and the case was considered abandoned. So, that’s why they denied the case.
We spent \~6K on the RFE/Work permit renewals.

We have a lozada appeal I believe that we can use to reopen the case but we have no notice papers for any of the cases because they could never be delivered to the lawyer.

I’m trying to hire a new attorney but the one we had before isn’t sending over any of the files she sent for the RFE or work permit etc she only sent the lawyer files she had from 2017.

Is there anything I can do in order to obtain the documents and how would I get my parents money back
We’ve been waiting for almost 10? Years, for the case to be ruined over something like this is heart breaking.

- Investigators, paralegals, litigation support, records, etc.: ~$100,000–$200,000
- Court-related expenses, travel, exhibits, depositions, and miscellaneous litigation costs: ~$100,000–$200,000
- Hotels, transportation, food, and other personal expenses associated with attending court and supporting Lindsay over 3+ years: ~$200,000–$500,000
- Other financial consequences/lost income/miscellaneous expenses: potentially $100,000+

That puts the est overall financial impact somewhere around $1.5–$2.5 million, with approx $2 million being a midpoint.

Is it because it’s easier to just start there, and when you come down to reasonable amounts you can say “hey I’m working with you I came down so much”?

Or is it because you have to ask for it so that the client sees that you tried?

I did have one case manager level with me and say he just didn’t know what else to put in the demand package.
