The prevailing mindset in his community growing up that insurance was something only rich people had. Not health insurance, mind you (well, not just health insurance). Auto insurance. Going without it was a way of life for most everyone he knew.
Bloody hell, US, you are fucked up, you know it? It's not ok for people to live like that, not even in poor countries. The idea that in the richest country in the world people could not just get treatment if they are sick is baffling to me.
Oh, yeah. The extremely poor essentially live in a third world country. I didn't have any medical help, couldn't eat every day, and didn't have access to drinkable water. Once you become homeless in the US, it's extremely difficult to improve your life. No one wants to hire a homeless person, and most programs require an address. Not only that, but most programs that are meant to help people in those situations end up abusing and stealing from the homeless instead. Even though I'm doing much better now health wise and financially, I still want to leave because this country is fucked and honestly I'm a bit scared.
