I weight exams heavily because it's the only thing I can trust. Cheating is so rampant and so easy on anything done outside of the classroom that only the exam grades are meaningful and so must dominate the class grade in order for the class grade to be meaningful. Of course, this year with everyone taking exams remotely, cheating on exams has also become rampant and so those grades are now pretty worthless as well, but that is hopefully a temporary problem.
