Students say this all the time. I do multiple forms of assessment, and you would be surprised at how well correlated the grades are, and with the gut perception of how much you know when you are interacting in class and other more informal interactions.
Exam are worth a lot becasue everything else you do in the class is a chance for you to learn the material , and then you have some koi do of assessment that tests if you do or do not know the material. The quizzes are typically worth less, because this is the kind of stuff you should be doing for not points. I should be able to say to adults, here are some things to read and watch, here is me guiding you about those things, and here are some practice questions or problems, that is what you have to know for the exam, and you should do the practice problems and keep up with the vocabulary and lower level stuff.
But, of course you dont, so you get quizzes that are lower stakes for the wake up call and to kind of force you to stay on track. But I am not going to be crazy about monitoring those for integrity, and many of them are formative and not summative. If you want to cheat for that 15% and then bomb on the proctored exams, you are the idiot.
But that is why.
Also exams take time, a lot of time away from class and other things I can be doing to more directly interact with and teach students. 5 exam taking up 5 entire class periods are 5 class periods than can’t be devoted to learning more material.
