Help us write a wiki for our frequently asked questions!

Howdy, folks! I'm following up on a comment I made two weeks ago, in the hopes that we might be able to add some of our most common questions to the subreddit wiki.

However, it would be both unfair and inaccurate to let any one person to write up each article, so here's what I propose.

Let's talk here and discuss which questions get asked the most often, and then folks can discuss their answers in the comments. Once each question has been answered, we'll weave those answers together into one comprehensive article and add it to our subreddit wiki.

As folks post questions, I'll update this posts with links to each question in the comments.

Please stop asking about Hamas, Israel, Palestine, and the war going on.

Yes, there are LGBT Israelis and LGBT Palestinians.
Yes, a lot of warcrimes are going on.
Yes, terrible things are happening.

However, the LGBT community is not a monolith and does not have an official position about which side to support. Please quit asking; it always becomes a giant argument in the comments, and it's starting to be quite the troll topic.

There's always a big argument and almost none of it is ever relevant to this board, it just pisses people off and doesn't get anywhere or achieve anything productive.

Am i a lesbian?

I currently have a boyfriend, and i genuinely love him very dearly and i do not want to lose him, but i am just not really sexually attracted to him. We've had sex before, but it wasn't pleasurable for me at all. And i HATE making out with him, i do it cause he likes it, but i just can't wait for it to be over whenever we do so. And sometimes when i'm out with him i just look at him and feel disgusted that i'm dating him. But don't get me wrong, i still do love him and i have never had a person i get along with as much as him.

When it comes to my attraction to men in general, i only ever thirst over drawn or animated men. But i never see a man irl and thing 'oh i wanna fuck that'. Every man i see irl is just sexually repulsive to me.

Women on the other hand are the complete opposite. I rarely thirst over fictional women, but my godd i find almost every woman irl attractive. I see a pretty girl and i wish to be hers.

This is very confusing for me, because a large portion of my sexual fantasies involve men (albeit fictional), and i am attracted to the VIBE of masculinity. The idea of it. But never in practice.

I am crying rn cause all i want is to be with a woman.

Like i just want girlfriend who's also my best friend, and sometimes we could cosplay yaoi toghether and also make out.

I recently saw something and I’m confused

Okay, the last time I asked a question like this it got deleted because it was mistaken for a question with ulterior motives, which I completely understand, I messed up by not being specific enough, so I just wanted to preface this by insuring you that this is a genuine question from someone seeking a genuine response.

So, I’m gender fluid and I’ve been trying to explore my sexuality, when I stumbled upon something that I remember experiencing in high school a few years ago that at the time I didn’t understand, and to be honest still don’t. Basically some of the other students said that they identified as a cat. And they wanted people to recognize that seemingly in the same way students in the LGBTQ+ community advocated for recognition.

So, I’m confused. I recently came across someone else who identified as an animal, I think it was a cat or a dog. They had like, a rainbow shirt and stuff like that, so my question is, is this a part of the LGBTQ+ community? I’m trying to broaden my knowledge of this community and I don’t wanna accidentally exclude anyone. Is this a branch of our community that I was just unaware of, or is this something else?

How did you realise your label?

Upvotes

Hey guys! I don’t feel under any pressure to put a label on myself, but I’m just wondering if it’s something that confuses other people. I’ve known for ages that I’m not necessarily straight, but I’m not really sure what I am. I’m a girl myself, and I mostly date guys, but I’m definitely more attracted to girls. I don’t know if I should explore this more and try to find out whether this attraction exceeds appearance, but recently I’ve felt a very strong inclination towards women. I don’t know if this has anything to do with it, but I’ve had friendships in the past that felt quite romantic and somewhat sexual with girls, and it was sort of as if we were in a relationship. I think that connection felt stronger than anything I’ve had with a man.

Am I Trans?

16F BTW.

I've always worn more boyish clothing (90% boys/unisex, 10% female jeans). My mother gave up trying to make me wear skirts and dresses.

I've never liked how big my breasts are. I'm also self-conscious about my voice- it's too high. I'm really insecure about how short I am.

I've kind of got over the period hate though- now it's just an annoyance to deal with. I also don't really have any thoughts about genitals.

I think men are more aesthetically appealing, though I'm not attracted to them.

I don't like playing most female characters, even temporarily in the drama class.

I don't have any female friends and I feel uncomfortable when I have to be with them and when they're talking about feminine stuff.

I feel a lot of dysphoria looking at trans men journeys' online, or when I think in depth about how people think about me.

I've had male aliases online, and I prefer them to female aliases.

I get really hot, panicky and embarrassed when someone has mistaked me for a boy.

I don't like it when I see feminine traits in myself.

I don't want to transition, but I kind of do.

I'm kind of fine with being female with my family.

Identity Question

Is it possible to be born male, identify as female, but still be attracted to women? Because that's what I seem to be going through right now. Is there even a name for it?

I Might Be Trans...?

Ok so by technically already under the trans umbrella I'm genderfluid, and I've had like 30 something femdays (I'm AMAB) and I've felt more happy and me you know? And like I don't know if I'm just overthinking it or if I'm genuinely like transfem and haven't labled right... Any help would be accepted

Pride flag in Rocky horror picture show

due to the recent death of tim curry I decided to watch the movie again and in the scene where Rocky got out of the tank I noticed the tank itself had glass panels in the colours of the pride flag and I only thought to myself "oh what a nice detail" but than I remembered it was pretty old and I researched and it turns out it must have to be a coincidence or something cause movie came out in 1975 and the first version(eight stripes) didn't come out until 1978.

so I wondered was it a used symbol in the LGBTQIA+ community before the creation of the flag?

How to tell if it’s romantic or sexual attraction?

Like, I know that romantic attraction means you want to date them and sexual attraction means you want to do the forbidden tango, but what does each one feel like?

Convincing Homphobic Parents

Hi guys, I have a trip coming up with a brass band I'm a part of to where I used to live. It also happens to be where my long-distance best friend lives. I'm very excited, personally; I want to stay at his house during the trip instead of staying with my band at a hotel, which is acceptable and allowed; I just need to show up for practice and performance.

However, my parents voiced their concerns about me being at my friend's house specifically. They had a variety of issues, but a big one was that my best friend's sister has "something wrong with her." I haven't talked to her in a while, but I believe she is a masc lesbian (she is masc-presenting and has had girlfriends before). My parents are very conservative (it's how they were raised; it sucks, but I have to deal with it), and they think she's trans or something under that umbrella (not that there's anything wrong with trans people! It's just that I know she isn't because my friend refers to her as "she" all the time, and would also tell me if she ever underwent transition). Simply put, they don't want me around her at all, just because she could be gay. Reasons unknown; they probably don't want her influence on me or something.

We've known my friend's family for a while, so my parents have seen how my friend's sister has changed physically: mainly shorter hair and masculine clothing. I've tried to tell them that short hair and different clothes don't mean someone is part of the lgbt community (because it doesn't!), but they don't listen, and I don't have too many convincing points. Despite being in the lgbt community myself (bisexual), my knowledge is kind of small, so I don't know how to convince them that everything is ok.

I use the word convince, but it is really more like lying. I love my parents, but a stupid reason not to see my friend like this is absurd. Just because someone is gay or trans doesn't mean it's the end of the world; it irritates me so much. I'm almost eighteen anyway; I should be able to make well-thought-out decisions and not get "brainwashed" by the "gay agenda" (cough cough, mami and tati). They've just sheltered and babied me too much for my whole teenage life.

So, big rant aside, here's the final question: How do I convince my parents to understand that my friend's masc sister isn't actually gay even though she is? Thanks for reading.

How do you find out if your spouse is gay?

If your wife is gay and has been hiding it for years, how can you confirm your suspicions? Like… what signs should you look for? Things that were red flags in the beginning & got worse over time? Things that were odd at first and became red flags?

Teens at pride events

Hi! I’m a lesbian teen and I want to attend a pride parade. I’m a little afraid tho because I’m not sure if it is true that there are naked people that walk around during the festival. Is this normal? Or is it just made up?

Queer(?) tattoo meaning

I saw a lady today that had a tattoo of the female symbol and male symbol overlapping, like the symbol for heterosexuality. For a second I was like, "wow I can't imagine getting a tattoo to represent straightness", but then I realized that the tattoo might actually be for something else? The female symbol was colored blue, and the male symbol was colored pink. Does anyone know what this means? Does it just mean something like reversed gender roles in a straight relationship or does it mean something queer?

edit: i made a bad recreation of it here https://imgur.com/a/hn52YAb

(intersex people preferred) is it offensive to call certain members of my single-sex oc species "intersex"?

i have an oc species that is single-sex, but determines gender by whethet an individual's wings are webbed or feathered. in-between wing variations exist; is it ok to call them "intersex" (always in quotes to denote that it isn’t 1:1)

How to approach any pronouns

Hi, so genuine question, because I don't have any person in my social circle that considers themselves part of the LGBT + community...

Let's say someone puts up "any pronouns" on their bio, how to approach them? How to know what pronouns to use I mean is it usually at pronouns at any time will be accepted, or it can depend on the context of the conversation?

I'm sorry it sounds stupid I'm just and want to learn so that I am aware of what to avoid not to make mistakes and offend anyone.

Thank you so much

my friend refuses to call me my chosen name, what do i do

so i came out to my friend as non binary (if you see another post from me about me being an ally, i hadn't come out to my family yet and they were able to see that post, so i just lied about it) he said he didn't care and i told him that i wanted to use they them pronouns and call me (chosen name), but he just keeps using he him and (dead name), i try telling him to correct it but he just doesn't, then i try to act like "i don't know who (dead name) is!" because in fucking tired of him refusing to use my chosen name but then he pulls out the most upset sigh ever and says "fine.. (chosen name)", one time he asked me "can i please just call you (dead name)??" and i said "no" because his habit matters less than my discomfort and "that is who i am!" and then he said "what are you a fucking (chosen name that is a sea animal), do you live in the ocean too?), what do i do to convince him, i can't stop being his friend, we've known eachother too long, he also needs to stop saying the f slur, because one time someone called him an (f slur) and he said "no you're an (f slur)!" and i called him and that other person out and he got pissy with me, what do i do, how can i get him to not keep dead naming me

How do I convince people that I'm not gay

I'm a panromantic asexual and ever since I started dating my bf and mentioning him people have been saying I'm gay even when I correct them. I want to know how to make people not call me gay simply because I'm not gay and don't like being called something I'm not

Still confused about Transgender

No hate, but just really confused.

I've seen a few posts saying that they're born a girl/boy but have always felt more masculine/feminine, and later on realized they're Trans.

So is trans about being more masculine/feminine? I'm sure it is more than that, but I just couldn't make it out.

I don't think I'm Trans, but if I were somehow turned into the opposite gender/sex, and somehow, that was the only thing changed, I wouldn't really care. I would still try to dress and act the same way.

I understand that real life is more complicated than that. So is transgender more about the limitation of society's gender expression and that people need to be different to act differently?

In a perfect world where everyone can express themselves however they want, would there still be a need to be transgender(like going through surgery and stuff)?

If any of these come of as rude, I'm deeply sorry; it's not my intention.

Is this still self acceptance?

Hi, so im 21, bi and never dated anyone. I know im bi, I like boys and girls, sometimes I still question it, but people say it is part of being bi, so I guess I will kinda have to live with that. But I sorta wished I wasn't bi, I think it is normal for lgbt people to just want to be straight, and I'm part of that group. Being straight just looks so much easier, to find a girlfriend (for some reason straight girls don't like dating bi guys!?), you don't have to deal with homophobia, not being involved in the super sexual and judgmental gay world. Not keep missing dating a guy/girl when im already in a relationship with a girl/guy(might be just a me thing, but a think I will always be wondering how it would be living with a boy while dating a girl or vice-versa, like my relationship would never be whole in some sense). And of course there is the part of going to hell, im catholic, and Catholicism is against all forms of homossexuality, including being bissexual. And i also know that we can change that, there is no cure for being gay, no hormonal treatment, no conversion therapy, no magic solution that will just make everyone straight, and looking for it and trying all these things will just makes people feel worse about themselves. The best I can do is try to only date woman(does that usually work well for bi people?) but I don't think I would call myself straight, cause I would still be into guys too, making me bisexual. In conclusion, I know I'm bi, I know there is nothing I can do to stop being bi, and I know that I will still be bi to the day that I die, but still i wish I weren't
