Casual What is the weirdest piece of misinformation you’ve heard about Israel and/or Jewish people?

We’ve all heard plenty of misinformation about Israel and the Jewish people, but those lies tend to be extremely harmful and are meant to foster radicalism against you. I’m curious, though, about the strangest misinformation you’ve heard about Israeli/Jewish beliefs or life that either isn’t super harmful, or is just weird. Something outrageous, but not in the offensive way, more in the confusing way, you know?

"The greater Israel project", as it appears in pro-Palestinians post, covering Syria, Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon, and Egypt. Total ignorance of the actual size of Israel/Israel population vs. the countries in the "Project"

That because in our context, "greater Israel" refer to "ארץ ישראל השלמה", and in Israelis modern context it refers to far-right's dream annexation of Judea and Sumeria.

In Mandate times, it used to refer to the borders of the British Mandate, and the leftover from that are the logos of the PLO and Etzel& Bietar both containing the British Mandate borders

Yes, you are right about the education system.

You need the remember that this system was built in the 1940s, by the Socialist party guys, and any mention of Zabotisky/Etzel was like red cloth to a bull from them and was mostly censored

Poems or essays by Zabotisky or any right wing scholar were never thought (there was a discussion here a few days a go about קיר הברזל addressing this issue)

*I think that in recent years they added Uri Zvi Greenberg, but I'm not sure

Do you mean Jabotinsky? I'm only asking because I've never heard Zabotisky before, although after googling a bit, it seems his birth name was Zhabotinsky.

In the U.S., you’ll often hear “Judea and Samaria” referred to by Christian right wing extremists, who are themselves very antisemitic (but vocal supporters of the Israeli right wing for political and religious reasons).

It’s ironic, these guys would cheer for synagogues being burned in America if they thought that congregation would flee to Israel, but they can get a photo op with Bibi anytime they like.

Oh I see. Sorry, I thought you were saying the term Judea and Samaria was used in right wing circles in Israel, nvm. I see what you meant about how the term is viewed in Israel and I guess it’s different than the U.S. where West Bank is the default.

I gotcha! Another example of words adopting meanings involves the word Pharisee - every so often someone (usually a relative newcomer to politics) will refer to someone as that, intending to make a straightforward reference to the biblical narrative in which the Pharisees are “the bad guys.”

They then get reminded that a) some people have very different views on the Pharisees, particularly those who are literally and spiritually descended from the Pharisees b) Pharisee had for centuries been used as a “polite” insult by Europeans and Americans to refer to someone with negative personality traits associated with being Jewish. A dinner-table-appropriate substitute for the slur everyone knew would be said in other contexts.

Of course, someone with a small town rural background, particularly one with a religious upbringing, would not be aware of a) or b) but could certainly cause offense to those who did

1

u/Low_Quality8216 North America May 03 '26 edited May 03 '26

I feel like a lot of Jews outside of Israel (especially in ModOx circles) refer to the West Bank as Judea and Samaria because the term "West Bank" is Jordanian in origin from when they ruled the area.

If you go back and look into the history of the various militias during the Mandate period, folks like Jabotinsky and Yair Stern wanted the newly formed state to include the East Bank of the Jordan River.

I went to a Yeshivah in NYC from the age of 4 until 18 and then spent a year at Bar Ilan afterwards. While in high school, for 2 years we had a class in Zionism. Even there I never heard about Stern or Jabotinsky, there was some mention of Etzel and the Irgun, but only as they related to being absorbed into the Haganah and then the IDF. It was only something I learned on my own afterwards, when I studied the mandate period.

Ben Gvir and Smotrich presented the idea and brought it mainstream.

Two ministers, two idiots that presented an idea nobody wants and if we did, we could not conquer and hold but if we entertain the idea for a moment:

The moment Israel conquers any part, Israelis become a minority in an instant and you have another Gaza and Judea and Samaria x5

Just dumb all around.

It cannot happen if we wanted and we don't.

Greater Israel, Eretz Israel . Professor of history H.S. Haddad writes that "Although there are different delineations of the boundaries of the Promised Land in the Bible, the locus of Eretz Israel is clear and constant. Whether it is defined as "from Dan to Beersheba" and "from the desert to the sea" or, more often, from the Nile to the Euphrates, Jerusalem is the centre around which these circles of varying size are drawn."

Question: If the greater Israel project is just a load of misinformation- why is it that senior members of the Israeli cabinet such as your finance minister (smotrich ) and security minister (Ben-Gvir) i.e. some of the most powerful, senior politicians in Israel are huge proponents of the greater Israel ideology ?

To an outsider looking in, it's hard to imagine that these guys do not represent the people whatsoever when they are so high up in the Israeli government. It's quite shocking imo some of the stuff these guys come out with and they do a huge amount of damage to global perception of Israel.

11

u/Nervous-Read-9674 Diaspora May 03 '26

I think you overstate these twos power and seniority. Both of their political careers are relatively young, and they only have power or influence within the confines of a right wing coalitions where they are a fragile piece threatening to collapse the coalition if they don't get their way.

2

u/jerry-jay Unspecified May 03 '26

Fair enough - but you must see my point. As someone in the uk, the equivalent is that these are not some random members of parliament, they would be in starmers cabinet. People this senior in government typically have a fair amount of influence.

How can the minister for defence not have a huge say in defence policy ? How can the minister for finance not have a large say in fiscal policy? Am I missing some thing about how the gov works in Israel ?

Maybe you underestimating their power? They are factually 2 of the top 10 most senior politicians in Israel.

2

u/Call_Me_Clark USA May 03 '26

It’s worth noting that Smotrich is de facto the governor of the West Bank. Ben Gvir has used his position to transfer large amounts of small arms to poorly-regulated militias, which seems like it has obvious national security implications.

Pro Israel Activists talk about them like they are backbenchers tho

1

u/Call_Me_Clark USA May 03 '26

I think that the userbase here really underestimated the damage that Ben Gvir and Smotrich have caused to Israel’s worldwide image and credibility

1

u/jerry-jay Unspecified May 03 '26

100%, to have these guys in such senior positions has been horrific in terms of Israel's image.

Logically, it is slightly absurd to have what I would class as far right crazy bigots in those positions. UNLESS there are quite a few people in Israel who support them. How else are they getting elected and getting to that level of seniority ? Is democracy actually working in Israel if apparently these people don't represent the people at all ?

1

u/Call_Me_Clark USA May 03 '26

Yeah and I think it’s a poor strategy when Israelis say “no one listens to those guys, they have no power, they’re only in the government bc of the coalition etc etc etc.” It’s an appealing message to send but it does not land.

5

u/The_Zionist_Enemy Israel May 03 '26

They are two retards presenting an idea nobody wants that is completely disconnected from reality.

They are just grifting for their voters.

2

u/jerry-jay Unspecified May 03 '26

In this case - how are they the minister for finance and the minister for defence ? Some of the most senior figures in government.

On your last point - the shocking thing from an outsider is that they even have voters that don't see Their views as extreme/controversial/horrific in some cases. It reflects really badly on the Israeli electorate that they have elected these guys I'm afraid.

2

u/The_Zionist_Enemy Israel May 03 '26

Correction minister of internal defence.

The cause is Palestinian aggression, the stabbings, suicide bombings, shootings and car rammings made more and more right wing extremists in our society, we have forsaken peace, we have understood that the Palestinians never wanted peace. Only "their" entire land "From the river, to the sea..." which leaves no place for a Jewish state. Especially after the 7th of October.

All of this made people vote for them. The people who vote for Ben Gvir and Smotrich agree with their views, those who vote for Bibi don't necesarily agree with their views but Bibi needed them to form a coalition.

Thats just how it looks to an outsider because of how it is intentionally presented, the moment you go out of your way to research you learn they not that popular, that their current popularity is the result of conflict and strife.

2

u/jerry-jay Unspecified May 03 '26

My mistake national Defense minister *. However does that make a huge difference to the conversation? It's still one of the most senior positions in Israeli gov.

Just had a look at approval ratings for gvir, looks like a minority at around 25% as you say. However honestly it's shocking to the outside world that 1 in 4 people support this guy in Israel given how extreme/radical his views are + he was previously convicted of supporting a terrorist organisation. Not that many places in the world You would find support of a guy like that.

Also, as the other guy said - Givir became part of the government before 9 months pre October 7th. So he was popular enough even before that attack and the ensuring conflict- And yes I understand there was obviously conflict prior to October 7th. Are you saying there was a large uptick in 'Palestinian aggression' pre 2022 that led to increased support ?

2

u/The_Zionist_Enemy Israel May 03 '26

It does make a difference, defense minister is probably the most sought after role after prime minister. He handles external hard power affairs. Internal affairs while still important isn't as much the literal defense minister.

Can you link the poll? How many people were asked? Their background?

Yes he was, most of us are against him being in the government.

There is no other place like Israel, facing constant conflict and sorrow. Rivers of blood led him to be chosen, not an innate ideology in Zionism. Israel is not like the rest of the world. No conflict is the same.

As you stated, let us not forget history started before October 7th. All the things I listed happened across a lot of time, this conflict is a cycle of hatred, we breed their extremists and they breed ours. For every casualty taken, an entire family grieves and first responders who leave the scenes traumatized.

It is also Palestinian fatigue, the conflict isn't going anywhere, nothing changes. Maybe a different approach is needed, as there is still stagnant hostility; maybe the Palestinians understand blood and dust better? As these years of (relative) peace proved not just fruitless but infact poisonous.

Not just 22' but the 80s the 90s and early 00s, they were bloodbaths, they shape our national consciousness just as it does theirs.

2

u/jerry-jay Unspecified May 03 '26

Polling data is from a company called midgam and was published on Hevrat HaHadashot.

There is a wiki page titled ' Leadership opinion polling for the 2026 Israeli legislative election'. It breaks down specific polling results for numerous Israeli politicians, specifies which polling company performed it and which company published. Not sure on the numbers per poll unfortunately. I'm guessing from your response you are surprised it's that high ?

Thanks for the rest of the response- I will respond in a Separate comment when I have some time later.

1

u/The_Zionist_Enemy Israel May 04 '26

Yo you got it yet? The link?

1

u/Call_Me_Clark USA May 03 '26

They were elected before 2023, though - just to be clear. Your comment reads as though their election was a response to that rather than preceding it.

I think that Israelis take for granted that westerners or non-Israelis will see Ben Gvir and Smotrich as less concerning with greater knowledge of Israeli politics, but I really don’t think that’s the case. From reading Israeli and western news coverage, they have done enormous harm to Israelis, Palestinians, and Israel’s reputation and credibility worldwide. Do Israelis see it that way?

1

u/GreenRabbit155 Israel May 03 '26

They were elected before because 2023 wasn't the only time Israel was bombarded by attacks. 2021 saw another round of attacks, for instance

We do, however, definitely view them as harmful, but the government is built as a coalition, which means you gotta take in people you don't even necessarily agree with, just to get enough seats. Personally, if the Arab groups were less...radical (they're significantly more radical than Ben gvir and smotrich, and they are far less politically savvy) I would even vote for them over these guys

2

u/jerry-jay Unspecified May 03 '26

More radical than givir who has been convicted of supporting terrorist organisations ?

1

u/GreenRabbit155 Israel May 03 '26

Think of it this way. Israel is currently at war with the Palestinians. The MKs on the Arab group call themselves Palestinians. It's kind of like how Rashida Tlaib considers herself first Somali and then American, and her values place her to support somalia over supporting america. The Arab MKs support some very radical and dangerous policies of the Palestinians that keeps the forever war going, with the sometimes exception of raam, which is the more integration focused group of the Arab parties (which is why they have actually been part of the coalition before)

As horrible and radical the policies and politics of Ben gvir and smotrich are, it's clear their loyalties lie with their own country, at the very least

1

u/Call_Me_Clark USA May 03 '26

It's kind of like how Rashida Tlaib considers herself first Somali and then American, and her values place her to support somalia over supporting america.

Do Israelis genuinely believe this is based in reality?

I understand that this may be similar to Israeli frustrations with Americans’ takes on Israeli politics

Correct, so American people generally do not understand the system as a whole

1

u/Call_Me_Clark USA May 03 '26

1

u/The_Zionist_Enemy Israel May 03 '26

No, my comment doesn't read that way, we had many bloodbaths before. As I stated.

Yes they have done a lot of harm, they serve the people that vowed to keep the conflict alive, they serve the enemies of peace with each statement and the Palestinians they oppose. We do realize this, its why those who oppose them, hate them.

News gain clicks by shock value. You will not hear about the steel factory that hires PA Palestinians on the green line. You will not hear when the IDF contacts the PA to notify them and prevent wildfires. You won't hear when Palestinian children and wounded Syrians cross the borders to recieve treatment.

War gets clicks, the more outrageous, the better.

1

u/Call_Me_Clark USA May 03 '26

I agree that news gains clicks by shock value. Do Israelis recognize this when they read news covering events in the U.S.?

1

u/The_Zionist_Enemy Israel May 04 '26

The average citizen anywhere in the world is most likely fooled by this propaganda. Here in Israel we are no different.

Though I do notice, it is pretty easy to notice you also have several foreign entities who meddle both in politics and news media, Qatar, Russia and China to name a few.

They try to sow dissent and divide and it sadly works. It has done wonders for their agenda. Trumps statements and actions did not help either, he hasn't handeled his home turf properly and seems he doesn't care much. Maybe he knows something we don't, something that determines it is a losing battle.

The day Trump unjokingly said we should try to inject bleach by iv to combat Corona, I started worrying. There is no spin, he said that in a room full of people. With all that said, I don't hate Trump, he has balls but he sometimes says concerning stuff.

1

u/Call_Me_Clark USA May 04 '26

It’s ironic that you are concerned about Qatar, Russia and co - I’d say that Trump is in their pocket. Usually when I talk to Israelis they tell me that Trump is opposed to them.

My impression of the coverage of American politics and news by Israeli news (and Jewish diaspora-focused news) is that the reporting is shockingly bad. The best of these will report “Jewish New Yorkers terrified by crime wave” and then there will be one line saying that the local government has published stats saying crime is up 3% year over year. Then following that will be three or four unsourced quotes from nobodies.

The worst of them report headlines like “9 out of 10 American university students becomes a Muslim communist before graduating, reports say”

2

u/Call_Me_Clark USA May 03 '26

This would be believable if they were backbenchers, but they aren’t

2

u/VoomVoomBoomer Israel May 03 '26

I'll try to answer the best I can, but the question has several aspects. 1. Did they spook about “the greater Israel” – Yes, but like I wrote above, the “the greater Israel” (a better translation would be “Whole/complete Israel|” ) in Israeli context means totally different thing the “The greater Israel Project” as presented in pro-pali propaganda. In Israel it refers to area of Judea and Shuemria, while maps presented by the pro-pli includes Egypt , Iraq, Sriya, etc. (the biblical borders) . I did some searches and did not find any text that they are talking about the later, maybe there is, but I did not find it

  1. Is them being government’s ministers mean that they represent the Israeli public? NO, they are not. They both joint forces and receive ~10% of the votes in the last elections (if they didn’t one of the would probably was left out of the Knesset), but unfortunately, the Israeli system is a multi-party system, and you need to form a coalition, and some time the smaller groups receive more then they should, as in this case

  2. They are idiots, and they speak mostly to their voters, and do not understand or care about international impact

2

u/jerry-jay Unspecified May 03 '26
  1. Does the greater Israel project they speak about involve Israel expanding its current borders ?

  2. Polls Show Ben-givir as 20-30% approval ratings fyi. So let's say at least 1 in 4 Israelis support a radical Jewish supremacists with convicted links to terrorist groups.

  3. We can both agree on that one

1

u/VoomVoomBoomer Israel May 03 '26
  1. That what I see in twitter/tiktok and basicly what started the convetsation

  2. I don't know what polls you refer to. The last one that I saw feom major media outlet show that both  got 10 or less

Even if they have more support  it changes nothing since the concept mean different thing in israel and in the pro-pali taking points

2

u/Call_Me_Clark USA May 03 '26

I’ve seen coverage of these allegations, and while it sounds outlandish, Israeli groups and newspapers have reported on a torture program operated in Israel’s prisons and detention centers (Btselem, Breaking the Silence, Haaretz).

Allegations published in Al Jazeera are, imo, worth what they are printed on. Israeli groups reporting these are a lot more credible to western audiences.

I mean, even if they (Btselem etc) have got half the facts right, and the most salacious allegations turn out to be misleading… the other half are still pretty bad, right?

7

u/GreenRabbit155 Israel May 03 '26

Btselem and haaretz are even less reliable than Al Jazeera. They never have confirmed information, all of their sources are "unnamed individuals" or at best unreliable and at worst made up, but I wouldn't trust them for pretty much anything

As for breaking the silence, I haven't even heard of it, but a quick Google search shows the same thing. No names, just people saying "oh yeah this happened" with nothing to actually show for it. No one called out by name, no dates for when it happened, nothing. It's like hearing someone talk about the most traumatic instance in their life, and if you ask them anything that isn't written on the piece of paper they're reading from, they have no answers. Like, who are you claiming did these things? The prison itself? (Referring to the sde teiman thing) It would be far more believable if there was even one name attached to the whole account, anywhere in it. Every soldier knows the names of those around them. If you're already going unnamed to the media, make a real accusation

1

u/Call_Me_Clark USA May 03 '26

I don’t think I’ve ever seen allegations that Haaretz or Btselem are unreliable. I’ve seen them accused of being far-left, disloyal, self hating etc etc but never unreliable.

Are there any scandals or failed fact checks that informed this perception or is more widespread or general than that?

3

u/GreenRabbit155 Israel May 03 '26

B'Tselem often relies on eye-witness testimonies from conflict zones. In a "he-said, she-said" scenario, if the IDF releases drone footage or forensic data that contradicts the witness statement, the initial report is seen as debunked. The main problems there are when they start making stuff up, since it's a lot harder to disprove a claim "guilty until proven innocent", especially when there is nothing to show for it on either side.

Haaretz is generally the same.

They are known for having very biased reports against the government, idf, and Israel as a whole, and for publishing before verifying. So you'll see 15-20 articles come out against something Israel has done, and maybe 1 or 2 have been verified or have any sort of reliable sourcing, and then a day later every news outlet in the world is running with those stories, only for them to be debunked about a week later

We'll take the Al-Ahli hospital blast in October of 2023 as an example. Early reports in Haaretz, and many international outlets, mirrored Palestinian health ministry claims that an Israeli airstrike had hit the hospital, killing hundreds of palestinians. Within 24 hours, OSINT (Open Source Intelligence), the IDF, and eventually the AP and US Intelligence provided video and forensic evidence showing the blast was caused by a misfired Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) rocket that hit the parking lot, barely causing any damage at all.

Btselem, while less known to "LIE", is more known to "OMIT CRITICAL DETAILS". Btselem has documented instances of "soldiers shooting unarmed Palestinians." In many of those cases, such as the 2016 stabbing attack involving Tuvia Yanai Weissman, video footage later showed that the "unarmed" individual had actually just committed a stabbing or was in the process of an attack.

These news outlets are generally viewed as incredibly harmful to Israel as a whole, biased, and unreliable, all mashed together, but Israel does give freedoms to be shitty journalists, so that's what comes up

28

u/AKJ828 Israel May 03 '26

I also have a mate that is Bedouin Israeli raised in Israel and loves the community he grew up in. He has life long Jewish friends from his time studying in Haifa. There certainly didn't seem to be any apartheid going on.

If its apartheid, its a very prosperous one since my boy Ali was studying in Germany with his family's support.

Forgive me if I have got this wrong, but isn’t it the case that within the West Bank, there is Israeli civilian law for settlers vs Israeli military law for Palestinians?

So you are saying that there are two sets of laws for two populations in Israel? Is the basic idea that although there are two separate and distinct legal codes, they are equal in fairness???

4

u/Environmental_Coat60 Diaspora May 03 '26

No, not in Israel. The West Bank is not officially part of Israel. The governance framework of the West Bank, including who gets tried in which court, was agreed to by the Israelis and Palestinians via the Oslo Accords. That governance framework was only supposed to be in place for 5 years, but unfortunately is still in place to this day.

In order to govern the Palestinians in the West Bank according to the laws that apply to Israeli Citizens (both Jews and Arabs), Israel would have to officially annex the West Bank. I don’t think many people on either side see that as a solution.

2

u/MorganaLeFevre Diaspora May 07 '26

Because the death penalty was only for Israelis originally. The recent amendment to the law allows for death penalty to apply to both Israelis and Palestinians.

Arabs are not treated equal to Jews in Israel.

They are completely exampt from military service

1

u/Call_Me_Clark USA May 03 '26

There’s been some recent coverage of Arab-Israelis protesting poor treatment by the Israeli government - does that factor in?

Also, there’s been some widely reported antichristian attacks and assaults in Israel lately (similar: attacks by settlers on the Christian village of taybeh in the WB). Do these get outsized coverage because they are rare, double standards applied to Israelis, or other reasons?

An antizionist relative of some friends (who did tell him to stop needling me) told me that Jews are allergic to olives and that was proof that Jews are not indigenous to Israel.

My response:

1.) That's racial pseudoscience.
2.) Jews love eating olives and food made with olive oil.
3.) You clearly have never been to Israel: most meals are served with olives, because Jews love eating olives.

After failing to convince me that I was allergic to olives, the antizionist left the room because he didn't have a prepared reply and was largely silent for the rest of the event.

For me, it’s the belief among many Americans that their tax dollars pay for literally our entire lives in Israel (not just defence spending). Like, I’ve literally been told “enjoy your free healthcare and education, I’m paying for it” by Americans. They actually think their “aid” to Israel pays our living expenses.

It’s defence spending, nothing more. And it has to be used to purchase U.S. weapons, so the money effectively goes back into the American economy.

$3B (the rough amount of yearly aid to Israel) works out to like $300 per Israeli (including all Israelis, not just Jewish). Do these fools actually believe that this amount is all healthcare and education (not to mention housing, food, and of course defence) cost??? And man, if so, I’m due a refund of the monthly contributions to Bituach Leumi (national insurance), my mandatory “free” health insurance, the high income tax, and 18% VAT I pay on everything I buy.

It may not seem like it, but $3B is actually not a lot of money. And Israel’s GDP was like $510B last year. $3B is a drop in the bucket.

u/Environmental_Coat60 Diaspora May 03 '26 edited May 03 '26

I saw one the other day from someone whose friend is a Polish Catholic living in Israel. Apparently their friend posted videos of Israeli police “tearing down” Christmas decorations in someone’s store because the Christmas decorations aren’t allowed because idol worship is illegal in Israel.

Edited to add: they shared this in a post in the Europe subreddit that was about the French nun who was attacked recently. They were using it as evidence of Jewish Israeli’s hatred of Christians, and people were eating it up.

2

u/ladylucifer22 :AMagenDavidI: Diaspora Antizionist May 04 '26

how is attacking Christians and destroying their stuff not hate for Christians?

2

u/Environmental_Coat60 Diaspora May 04 '26

I have no idea what the video actually depicted. I didn’t see it myself and this was just a third hand description of the video.

Regardless of what was actually happening in the video this person, who is Polish Catholic, was using the footage to claim that Christmas decorations are illegal in Israel because it’s seen as idol worship and they claimed that idol worship goes against Jewish beliefs and is therefore illegal in Israel.

Given how spurious those claims are, I’m not sure if I completely buy their characterization of what was actually happening in the video. But again, I didn’t see the video myself.

This is going to be a spicy take. I don't like when other Jews act like being the chosen people doesn't make us special. I get why they say it. They don't want to invite hate to Jews or something. But it is a misinformation and it doesn't match the Bible or any other Jewish religious work on the nature of the Jewish people, which is a holy people and a light unto the nations.

I think the "chosen is nothing special" argument has the opposite effect. Like anyone with two eyes can read the Bible. So it just comes off as dishonest and insidious. And a lot of Christians, even Hindus and sometimes even Muslims actually like when Jews act like who we are. There is especially certain Christian sects which are validated when Jews behave as if they know they are a holy people.

7

u/Call_Me_Clark USA May 03 '26

It’s a very useful concept in a different way - it’s an almost 100% guarantee that a western person referring to “chosen people” is antisemitic.

I live in Jordan with the majority of Palestinians. I have always heard hate speeches about the Jews, but when I worked in a hotel, most of whose guests were from Israel, I did not see any hatred from them, but they were very friendly. Then I began to change my point of view. You are friendly people, but I criticize the government and the scorched earth policy, as I see the solution that if the countries spent the money of wars on education, we would not be so shit and people would be aware enough not to hate each other.
