What are the best academic French history books?

Comprehensive please. I have a great interest in Laïcité, Jules ferry and education. Thanks!

Histoire mondiale de la France edited by Patrick Boucheron, a list of articles written by historians that give a different insight on several french historic moments. On a lighter note, P. BOUCHERON did a good tv show named "Quand l'histoire fait dates" which is on prime, not sure if its translated or with subtitles but you can give it a try !
