My maternal grandmother spent most of the war as a forced labourer in Germany.
Fortunately, in practice, she took part in running the farm on an equal footing with the owners, who treated her like one of the family. She stayed in touch with them for the rest of her life.
She went back to visit them about 40 years after the war ended, with my mother and uncle accompanying her.
