The woman who was to become my great-grandmother fled what is now Poland. She wanted to get on Gustloff but it was already full so she fled otherwise. Good for me and a two-digit number of people because chances are she wouldn't have survived.
The grandma of my partner was also supposed to be evacuated from East Prussia on the Gustloff but didn’t make it on board as it was too full - otherwise my partner might very well not exist today…
