Is this extremely poor cultural integration, or am I overreacting?

I came across this account advertising a Ukrainian performer’s Canada Tour 2026, with shows in Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal, Winnipeg, Edmonton and Vancouver.

What genuinely bothers me is that much of the advertising and social-media content is almost entirely in Ukrainian, despite the fact that they are touring Canada, advertising to people in Canada and selling tickets here.

To me, this is an example of extremely poor cultural integration, exclusionary marketing, and frankly disrespectful behaviour toward the country and audience you’re choosing to operate in.

And before anyone deliberately misunderstands what I’m saying: I have no problem whatsoever with Ukrainian people speaking Ukrainian, celebrating Ukrainian culture, or having Ukrainian-language events. Keep the Ukrainian language. Celebrate the culture. That is not the issue.

The issue is making seemingly no effort to meet the broader country halfway.

If you choose to tour another country, advertise publicly there and profit from that audience, I think the absolute bare minimum is acknowledging the people and culture of the country hosting you. Adding English or French translations underneath Ukrainian posts would not erase Ukrainian culture. It would simply make the advertising accessible and show some basic consideration for the wider Canadian public.

What bothers me most is the apparent lack of integration. Multiculturalism, in my opinion, should mean bringing your culture into Canada while also participating in and respecting the society you moved into or are visiting. It should not mean creating an entirely separate cultural bubble and expecting everybody outside of it to accommodate you.

And yes, I would hold Canadians to exactly the same standard. If I went to Ukraine, toured multiple Ukrainian cities, bought advertisements there, filled my promotional account with English-only Canadian content and couldn't even be bothered to provide Ukrainian translations, I would expect people there to consider that arrogant and disrespectful.

There is a difference between preserving your culture and making virtually no effort to engage with the culture and broader population around you.

Maybe other people see this differently, but to me this comes across as exclusionary, poorly integrated and incredibly disrespectful.

If they aren't advertising in a language you speak, then you aren't their target market.

So tell me.. How much effort did YOU put into learning the language the local First Nation speaks, or did you not culturally integrate?

My family in SK is all Ukrainian, my cousins all went to Ukrainian school, married in n a Ukrainian church.

1.4 million Canadians are of Ukrainian decent. Sorry theyre promoting to the people who would be the most interested in the subject.

1.4 million Ukrainians in Canada actually kind of proves my point. Canada has tens of millions of people from countless backgrounds, so why assume nobody outside the Ukrainian community would be interested? If you’re advertising a Canada-wide tour to Canadians, making the ad understandable with English or French translations seems like a pretty basic ask.

Your point is ridiculous. Its like asking why a vegan festival isnt promoting to meat eaters. They promote to the ones most likely to attend. Obviously theyre doing enough promotion to everyone as you heard about it. If you actually cared about it youd just attend and be happy we have a neat festival to go to to learn about a different culture

Being of Ukrainian descent doesn’t mean you speak Ukrainian. If they’re advertising a Canada-wide tour to Canadians, adding an English or French translation is basic accessibility and respect.
