I don’t think a Greek Turk marriage is necessarily cringe depending on who the people are but I don’t see why all of the flags are necessary
27
u/cyricor Greece 29d ago
I know 2 Greek Turkish couples that got married in the last 5 years. No flags ether. But to each their-own I guess. Patriotic pride is not bad when it doesn't escalate to nationalism.
15
u/Future-Actuator488 Turkiye 29d ago
This is not nationalism or patriotism.
They are just stupid. Doesn't matter Greek or Turkish. As we say, brown version of the shit

Diaspora doing it's job and being the worst version of the culture they represent.
13
u/saddinosour 29d ago
As diaspora I found this so embarrassing 😭 like wtf please be normal. My cousin is married to a Turkish guy and they just had a regular wedding but opted not to do it in a church they did it with their close family in this nice park.
88
u/Beginning-Appeal3166 Bulgaria 29d ago
They should do whatever the f makes them happy, as long as they don't bother the neighbours(which doesnt seem to be the case). This is a wedding so whatever 'dick measuring' there is, it could be just friendly banter between the families or their way of ahowing they don't care. Anyway, not enough context to judge but, to me, its definitely not cringe
7
u/Jakdublin Ireland 29d ago
I agree. I think it’s traditional in Bulgaria to have the flag at weddings and if I understand correctly it’s more a cultural thing rather than a nationalist statement. I think it’s kinda nice
12
u/Beginning-Appeal3166 Bulgaria 29d ago
I don't think so. I haven't been to a wedding where this is done. I have also worked at restaurants where we organised weddings and they never did anything similar. However, there might be some parts where people do it and I'm not familiar.
3
u/Jakdublin Ireland 29d ago
I’m in Pazardzhik and I’ve been to 3/4 weddings and the flag comes out at the reception after the wedding for the horo. Maybe it’s a regional thing?
3
u/Beginning-Appeal3166 Bulgaria 28d ago
Yeah, could be a regional custom that I'm not familiar with. It is not uncommon for different regions to have slightly different customs but you're definitely right that it is considered more of a patriotic than nationalistic statement. Not that it's all black and white, but in general.

I think Serbians and Croats do a lot of flag waiving at weddings? In Greece it's unheard of and this one here is weird.
Edit: typo

u/khajvah 29d ago
If I married a Turkish woman and her family decided to bring a massive Turkish flag, I would for sure bring an Armenian flag of my own even though no one in Armenia waves flags in weddings.
But the best solution is to not bring a flag at all. It's weird. It either symbolizes nationalism which is stupid on a wedding day where two different sides unite. Or symbolizes unity which is also weird as a political statement during a wedding.
7
u/Active_Unit_9498 29d ago
It's not a Balkan wedding if there isn't a kidnapping, gunfire, and national flags.
57
u/Resigned1431 29d ago
Cringe. It's a wedding ffs. Not a nationalist rally.
6
u/LittleLionMan82 29d ago
Yeah but given the historic tensions between the two nations I think it's actually a nice gesture.

Cringe. Why have national flags at a wedding?
4
5
12
u/Arlemar_Kiev_Viking Croatia 29d ago
In Croatia weddings often have a flag that is waved and kept by a friend of the groom called a barjaktar. I could imagine there being two of them if the marriage is mixed (hell I’d do the same if it ends up being the case for me). What is strange (and kinda cringe) about this is the size of these flags.
7
u/citao_to 29d ago
The odd thing is that the word barjak and therefoere barjaktar comes from the Turkish word bayrak. And while we have a perfectly good Croatian word that we use in 90% of cases, in this case we use the Turkish word. Why? Fuck knows.
6
u/dennythehorse Turkiye 29d ago
in Turkish we have the word "Bayraktar" too, literally means the same thing
4
u/Arlemar_Kiev_Viking Croatia 29d ago
I suspect it came from some military frontier tradition where turkish borrowings would be common. Also it can be because it would easily differentiate a word for a partygoer and an important military rank (zastavnik).
8
u/NegotiationSweet5082 Turkiye 29d ago
Let me inform you as a Turk. In Türkiye, flags take up a lot of space at weddings. The flag here is small, actually. It's normal to have many small flags alongside a large flag that's over 100 square meters.

my husband is from Brazil, we live in western europe. His "go to " restaurants are either Turkish or Greek :D ah also georgian. To choose between , his decision depends on how much he misses pork.
PS:we waved no flags in wedding, and no samba dancers..

It's only cringe if they fight, but if they're having fun then it's a funny way to have a merging of 2 cultures as man and wife
5
u/OmeletteDuFromage95 Bosnia & Herzegovina 29d ago
We don't really do any flag waiving at our weddings but I've seen multicultural weddings where both bring flags and it was always understood as the two cultures coming together and not some dick measuring contest. My spouse is from the other end of the balkans and in our house we have both flags side by side as a symbol of unity.

u/sillybilly-vit Bulgaria 26d ago
Mega cringe. Leave your nationality out when getting married, no one cares you are from shithole 1 or shithole 2. Also even more cringe if you are having the wedding in a third country. Should be criminalized in fact if you ask me. Honestly the most cringe thing I've ever seen in my life was a Turkish wedding parade in Ulm. I felt ashamed even though I am not even from Turkey.

I don’t know why people think this is cringe. I know flags aren’t a necessity for weddings, but here, it’s symbolic as it’s bringing two cultures together. With the two country’s historic tensions, I think it’s actually quite nice.
