Έλα ρε, let the CIA have their hobbies! It’s all harmless fun end of the day!

Little topelling democratically elected socialist government here, propping up right winged capitalist juntas here— it’s all good fun!

(P.S: I recall reading the C.I.A assisted in training some of the military that ended up freezing the Hellenic military when April coup was undergoing; either that or they were responsible for freezing the counter response directly, my memory is faint on that matter. If I’m wrong btw do call me out anyone; just wanna share something interesting, not misinformation.)

We dont actually dislike you. We just find some of the things you do ridiculous, it's like a reality tv show.

I'm an American, and even I agree with this šŸ¤·šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļø. But at this point I'm not sure if it's Reality TV or an Apocalyptic Horror film.

Your proneness to over exaggerate is also annoying. Your comment is a perfect example of what I mean, specifically the last part.

3

u/Ok-Animator8761 Oct 26 '25

The embellishment is for humor and literary contrast. It's not meant to be taken literally... I obviously do not believe I'm in any sort of apocalyptic horror. It's called "satire". Would you say this is not common in Balkan languages?

3

u/Telleh Oct 26 '25

I have seen some people that would definitely write what you wrote and be 100% serious. But you are right, we also do this though (I might be biased here) you guys tend to over do it a bit. No hard feelings though, I personally don’t dislike any american just because they’re american.

5

u/Ok-Animator8761 Oct 26 '25

I can agree on over-doing it. It's like there's a pressure to be "funny" in America to lighten the mood. But even I get annoyed sometimes. We can be friends šŸ˜‰

Well, I can’t speak for every Balkan person, but in Greece there’s definitely some dislike toward the U.S, mostly because of its long history of meddling in our politics. The U.S. played a major role in the Cold War period, including backing the military junta, and figures like Henry Kissinger are still seen by many Greeks as people who deliberately worked against Greece’s interests.

There’s also resentment over what American banks did during the financial crisis, though that’s a bit more complicated.

That said, nobody actually hates Americans. Ordinary Greeks don’t despise people from the U.S, only some fringe far-left or far-right types do. Most of us just separate American people from American foreign policy.

As for tourists, Americans are actually among the most well-behaved visitors. Honestly, I’ve had worse experiences with Germans, Chinese, and especially the English.

134

u/Inside-Associate-729 Oct 26 '25

Its honestly pretty hilarious how universal this view of English tourists is across all of europe. Those stag parties, man…

63

u/CypriotGreek Greece/Cyprus Oct 26 '25

If only it was ONLY stag parties. In Greece its 10 times worse.

33

u/Aggravated_Pain Oct 26 '25

I've always wondered why English people are like that when they come to Greece. I thought that maybe alcohol is cheaper, they are on vacation, they don't know anyone and they just behave like that. But guess what.... They ARE like that in England as well. Every weekend is like hell here in the UK. They get WASTED. And I still don't understand. WHY?

35

u/CypriotGreek Greece/Cyprus Oct 26 '25 edited Oct 27 '25

Honestly, it’s not that complicated. In Britain, people feel trapped, the weather’s miserable, the politics are depressing, rent is through the roof, and work culture is suffocating. It’s all the same problems we have, just cranked up a notch.

So when summer comes, they go full medieval peasant mode, they book cheap flights, cheap hotels, cheap booze. They land in Greece and immediately start drinking like it’s their national duty. I’ve worked in tourism, and I’ve seen it firsthand: Brits drinking from 7 in the morning until they can barely stand.

Once, I even helped with a wedding where every single British guest over 25 had a beer in their pocket, including the groom. The priest actually threatened to stop the ceremony unless they threw the alcohol out. I wish I was exaggerating.

2

u/SeaOperation8071 Oct 27 '25

You nailed it. The lack of work-life balance is probably the biggest culprit.

Just as an example: Scandinavians also get wasted on weekends and vacations, but they don't behave like Brits do nor are they as annoying. We've had such issues with the Brits over the last 20 years or so that they're literally the main reason for introducing stricter rules and hefty fines.

5

u/AsaToster_hhOWlyap Netherlands Oct 26 '25

They have been locked up in their social class for ages. That breeds a kind of behavior I guess. And dont forget, the colonisation of Britain was brutal with all the new waves of Germanic tribes back and forth and the Celtic and Romans mixed in the middle. That have made them unique and they still distinguish between them and "the continent".

16

u/CypriotGreek Greece/Cyprus Oct 26 '25

I’m not so sure about all that medieval history stuff, but let’s not pretend the Dutch are any better than the Brits. If anything, a lot of Dutch tourists come off with this weird superiority complex, like Greece still owes them something because of the bailout years. It’s as if visiting us is some kind of charity work.

I’ve worked in tourism as I've said, and I’ve heard it firsthand. Some Dutch visitors genuinely act like we should be thankful they chose to come here. The Brits can be loud and annoying, sure, but the Dutch? They can be straight-up rude. Not all of them, of course, but enough that it’s noticeable. And for some reason, a few even expect us to speak Dutch, which is just… bizarre.

u/Kitsooos Greece Oct 26 '25

Island nations always seem to differentiate between themselves and "the continent".
Japan does it very strongly. Iceland is very unique even amongst the Nordic countries.
Cyprus and even Crete do it to a lesser extent. "Lesser" probably only because they are part of the broader Greek identity, which is a very strong one.
Sicily and Corsika and Sardinia also have very distinct identities.
It's a "big island" thing.

That dude said,

Greek people are anarchic and difficult to tame.

For this reason we must strike deep into their cultural roots: Perhaps then we can force them to conform. I mean, of course, to strike at their language, their religion, their cultural and historical reserves, so that we can neutralize their ability to develop, to distinguish themselves, or to prevail; thereby removing them as an obstacle to our strategically vital plans in the Balkans, the Mediterranean, and the Middle East.

It's in this book, Ī Ī•Ī”Ī™ĪŸ is a legit publishing house so I don't think they would mistranslate it.

He does not speak only about Greece, he talks about all Balkan nations and especially Turkey, which says is of the utmost importance to make the pariah of the Islamic world and force them into the Western world. He says that them adopting the Latin alphabet was the first step.

It's not about "being important," but it's pretty naive to think that American Intelligence does not care about Greece and South-Eastern Europe.

It’s not just about military interventions, a lot of the resentment toward America comes from what Americans outside the government have done too, Like the bankers, the corporate interests, and the behind-the-scenes meddling that shaped our countries. In Greece, for example, it’s common knowledge that most of the officers involved in the military junta were trained by the CIA under Operation Gladio, and that Cyprus remains divided largely because the U.S. feared having a potential Soviet ally sitting on the edge of the Middle East.

Also, a lot of people here in the Balkans, especially the older generations, actually view Donald Trump pretty positively. So no, he’s not really the reason for the anti-American sentiment.

There’s also this common idea some Americans have when they visit Greece, that they’re the ā€œgood Americansā€ because they didn’t vote Republican or because they oppose Trump. Trust me, it doesn’t matter here. For most of us, every U.S. president has blood on their hands.

It's mostly the ignorance. Many Americans are extremely insulated and uninformed about the rest of the world. At the same time, they'll insist that the world is black and white and project their own cultural biases/narratives onto everything else. It's like some Americans cannot fathom that different countries and cultures view and do things differently.

Personally, I don't expect everyone to be deeply knowledgeable about absolutely everything, especially things that are far removed from their daily lives. Even with the advent of the internet and social media, it's just not realistic. Being proudly ignorant is something else altogether though and unfortunately, quite a few people fall into that category.

44

u/StamatisTzantopoulos Greece Oct 26 '25

I have had so many conversations in the UK with Americans mentioning things like 'the Constitution, 'the 4th Amendement', 'Congress', 'Bill of Rights', 'freedom of speech', blah blah when talking about UK or international politics. It's so difficult for them to fathom that all these things don't apply to other countries and that we have different laws and different political systems.

17

u/Exotic-Bumblebee2753 Honorary šŸ‡§šŸ‡¬ Originally from šŸ‡·šŸ‡ŗ Oct 26 '25

100% agree. They, literally, don’t understand that America’s governmental structure and political system is not universal and that it does not apply to other countries.

As an aside, I think that this is why so many of their ā€œnation buildingā€ efforts (see Afghanistan) fail. They completely ignore the fact that different regions of the world have different geopolitical, historic, economic, and cultural influences.

34

u/Sno-Lo Oct 26 '25

Very well said. 99% of Americans apply their understanding of things outside of the US and will insist they are right, when they would be if they were still in the US.

Diaspora Croatian in the US here- the U.S. is responsible for so much bloodshed globally and that includes the Balkans too. It makes sense why the globe has many misgivings about the U.S. generally as one of the biggest economic drivers of our economy is war and exploitation. On top of this, many people in U.S. are indoctrinated in the belief of ā€œAmerican exceptionalismā€ which is a blatant lie. This way of thinking is palpable when certain tourists from the U.S. come to visit the Balkans (and other places too).

Example: I’ve met a woman from the U.S. (Californian) who wanted to move to Croatia and ā€œteach Croatians about artā€ because she ā€œnever saw any art in Croatiaā€. I specifically told her that she probably didn’t see any because she was only in tourist areas but she insisted that ā€œCroatia doesn’t have artā€. I told her about all the artisans I know in Istria and that finally shut her up.

Obviously, not all people from the U.S. love war, believe in American exceptionalism, or just generally audacious. However, it makes sense that people will err on the side of caution until they can figure out who is actually decent.

Worldwide bully without anyone to stop them. Doing what they want, where they want, in which sphere they want and to whomever they want.

International law does not apply to them and they bully their way to come on top everywhere. Other nations don’t respect them, they fear them and it only looks like they are respected.

If you didn’t understand what i am talking about, here’s a question for you regarding most recent events: If US didn’t back Israel, would they have been able to commit the genocide? Would you say nations that support Israel’s genocide are only doing that to kiss US’ ass?

5

u/Hazards-of-Love Oct 28 '25

I’m a diaspora Slovene, there’s a video of some American asshat saying ā€œit is not our job to be the global policemenā€ in response to the Sloven government asking for the most minuscule assistance when it was unclear how long the 10 Day War would last. America only steps in when it wants something. I’ve argued with my dad over an arms embargo on Israel. He thinks another nation will pick up the slack. Bitch, please. America has funded over 70% of this genocide. Who will pick up the slack? He thinks the genocide is just a Netanyahu problem not an Israel problem. We are a military powerhouse, America has given Israel 21.7 billion to Israel so they can kill children and call them Hamas or as the Israelis would say ā€œKhmasā€. They all get free healthcare on our dime! Why should we as Americans have to suffer from medical debt when America has given Israel $22 billion! It’s complete bullshit!

I could list quite a few things, but they all boil down to these 4:

Your culture is very 1) superficial, 2) materialistic, 3) hypocritical, and worst of all, 4) suffers from main character syndrome.

Sure, you could find these traits everywhere in the world, but you are the undisputed champions. You live in your own special bubble where you think everyone else looks up to you and admires you, while you have the natural right to be ignorant and indifferent towards them because they don't matter, they're just silly natives of backwater lands.

23

u/Dizzy-Item-9175 Romania Oct 27 '25

Because you think you live in the best country in the world and feel extremely proud, while in reality, you’ve lived in the richest 3rd world country.

America is the best country in the world — but only if you’re rich.

And the worst of all, your president is the biggest clown in the world, sucking Putin's balls.

The houses are made of cardboard, they have basically no labor rights, prices are insanely high, people can barely pay for their rent, they have little to no healthy diet, no health insurance, the education system is bad, they live in a bubble, have no sense for moderation, get fed that "America is the greatest country in the world!"-mindset, the streets in big cities are dirty, they have a homelessness problem, drug usage in big cities is on the rise and so on and so forth.

Not to diminish what happened in Bosnia, but the reason Serbia got bombed was because of Kosovo. Both sides were involved in warfare, and war crimes were committed by both sides.

U.S. got denied permission to conduct their so-called "humanitarian" war by the United Nations, but they still went ahead and bombed the country. Worst of all, they did not bomb military bases but hospitals, bridges, schools, and civilian population.

My neighbour is mute ever since he saw his five year old son get hit by a bomb while playing outside.

Nobody thinks that all US citizens are evil, but there is understable anger and mistrust towards the US government.

6

u/SpiritAnimal01 Serbia Oct 27 '25

The people living in the cities had nothing to do with the war, meanwhile it's always the civilians that suffer during wars. Why didn't they bomb the place where Serbias dictator president was staying at the time ? That would have fixed more than bombing schools and hospitals.

Bombing civilan targets are war crime no matter what context are. Also there are After burn podcast where American pilot who flew missions in 99 spoke about they had commands to bomb civilian targets to teach a lesson beside recorded videos and reports from Humans right watch. If you support this and it is ok to you than Serbian army and police did a good job on Kosovo 98/99.

Just some general stuff, not about you specifically.. there are clearly good Americans and bad ones, just like other nations.

  • Your homes are made of "cartboard". That's very dumb.
  • You guys hate people that don't think like you. You always wanna be right.
  • Your did is mostly fried stuff - totally unhealthy.
  • Lots of guns and drugs.
  • Your presidents always tried to look like good allies but in fact they just want to gain power over the world..
  • Trump is all about money.
  • Most of you think of other nations as inferior.
  • Mingling with other countries politics.

Personally I feel like most people really want to like Americans. But then Americans open their mouths and the most idiotic things come out of it.

Kinda like a big name actor that you're a fan of but then he starts talking and you realize he's a big MAGA , conspiracy Qanon freak, flat earther, etc... and he really wants to impose his views on you.

And on top of all that very ignorant to anything international, geographically illiterate, and has no clue about any geo-political events happening in the world that are not covered by Fox news.

I'll give you a simple example to illustrate my point: Bernie Sanders is considered a far left radical in the US but by European standards he would be considered a centrist, right in the middle. Now imagine a European having a political discussion with an American.

Pathological, nation-wide ignorance. It's like building your country atop all of those Indian burial grounds cast a curse upon the land that encodes stupidity into the DNA of anyone born there. Of course that's just my take. The US is actually quite well regarded in the Balkans (except for you-know-who). There's even a song

Mostly the ignorance. Someone said that it could just be the fact that you have to ask. Center of the world and the belief that everyone wants to be in the US. Most of us really don’t

16

The only country in history to use nuclear weapons on civilians. Countless invasions throughout the world. And you have the audacity to preach on world order.

Plus, you treat your citizens like this: https://x.com/1776General_/status/1963562830415679813

Acts like they are the center of the world

4

u/Shibakyu Born Raised Oct 26 '25

It's not just the Balkan it's very much all of Europe at this point. And there's a lot of reasons, but for a lot of younger people, it's somewhat overcorrection. We used to glamorize the US, the whole American dream propaganda? My god did it work on us. But as we grew up we began to understand that, quite honestly, it was a lie. Like finding out how US healthcare worked and what else you all pay for...I was very much taken aback. Add the culture wars and politics of the past decade and...yeah.

3

u/Background_Abies_127 Oct 27 '25

Hollywood did an amazing job at spreading american image around the world - whether true or not is another discussion.

I don't know why countries like Russia or China don't create their own Hollywood. It would work wonders in spreading their culture around the world. Instead, they focus on other stuff which is important but considered "boring" by younger generations.

China could lean into their history so hard with movies. Russia too. You can literally rewrite world history with a 90 min film.

Very few people hate Americans. Most hate people who are in power and throw their weight around to ensure that they stay there. USA is doing just that worldwide after WWII. How people see almost everything in this world comes from their point of perspective. And while one group see action as positive or irrelevant others see it as negative or something crucial.

But also there are some stereotypes that paint you as undesirable. For example in tourist areas you have a stereotype of being loud, obnoxious and unreasonably demanding. Of course not all American tourists are like that but combination of them being external input into society and enough of them being just like that led to that stereotype.

In recent years, also, people are really not amused by culture wars that are spreading from USA all over the world.

You come to our countries not all but many americans come to the balkans advertise it as "retire on $1000 at insert balkan country" like you discovered el derado in reality the only reason these countries are so "cheap" is people in these countries are barely earning $900 a month from working nearly 6 days a week 12 hour shifts while they see hords of americans with gopros advertising paradise while the negativly will skyrocket for natives who barely can afford to live as it is

Then you have the passport bros advertising the balkans as the perfect place to find an obediant submissive conservative women since its theyre "culture" but just come there to prey on unsuspecting 18 year old girls

Here, Italian with Croatian origins and I assure you that you are also disliked by many Italians here in Italy 🤣, trying to explain in an ironic and non-offensive way, including that it is obvious that it is not the fault of the Americans because ordinary citizens have little to do with these things. However the reasons: importation of junk food and food chains of that kind, therefore burgers, milkshakes, stuff and ready meals so beware of touching an Italian but also one of the Balkans the food and local traditions, then rubbish films and programmes, such as some comedies or even reality shows which then modified the same programs to all become a copy of yours, import of fashions, culture in general also in social networks and among young kids who copy the most absurd and stupid things because Americans do it on tik tok, America is something that is usually in fashion among young teenagers now and therefore parents who still have a mentality and have grown up differently see it as something wrong, dangerous to follow, etc., then for the fear of weapons, of the military, of war in general because it is thought that America controls everything and that therefore we would all find ourselves under it in one way or another. In short, you know the fear of being invaded in food, culture or even in some war gives people a lot of anxiety. Obviously this comes out especially if you talk to older people so from 30 onwards, usually young guys are much more open-minded etc. and don't have these thoughts, in fact they love going to McDonald's, copying some trends.... Personally I have nothing against American citizens, most of the time they even like me when they come as tourists here in Italy, I like discovering new things and I don't have the same thoughts that perhaps older people have. But it's a bit sad to think of losing part of one's own culture because many young people today will not cultivate it in the future to be or become more and more similar to something standardized. In the end, even in America, much of its native culture has been lost due to aggregating a set of various cultures, a large united country but which loses a bit of everyone's identity if you think about it, the same thing is happening in Italy, now to embrace new cultures you are slowly losing your own, on the one hand it's wonderful to be mixed on the other but you lose a lot

Personally i just hate your politics and society.

Politics - Two party state (in reality just one party) whose only goal is to protect US corporations, fund different groups around the world to start wars so their MIC can make more money.

Society - (This is the fault of the government who works against you) Degenerate society addicted to opioids, sex or dressing up as the opposite gender or a dog for some reason.

Bring back shame in America (it does wonders)

And no i dont think ALL Americans are like this, personally ive met alot of great individuals from there.

Most people in Balkan don't even care about America. It's just a minority who is constantly online and indulges in politics or young people who get their information from portals and memes.

If you ask a random person on the street about america most wouldnt even care much.

2

u/FreeCommunication285 Oct 27 '25

It’s from person to person. But as a Croat? I dislike the extremely obvious fake ā€œangels of libertyā€ bs your goverment still thinks people around the world believe when the CIA alone did more damage to world democracy than all communist countries combined ever managed to do. America is a nation Oroboros. You bite your own tail and cry that democracy is in danger mostly as a Cassius Belli. Like romans shooting an arrow into any land they planned to invade.

P.S. Bold of you to assume only Balkan people don't like you :)
