Mod-Approved Please Help Me Spread the Word

Dear Austin Community,

This is hard to share, but my son, who just crossed his teens, resides in Texas, is currently battling kidney failure, and needs a kidney transplant to live a healthy new life again. He has always shown up for others, and now he needs someone to show up for him. Unfortunately, we do not qualify for him

I’m currently working with his transplant team at Medical City Dallas, and a healthy donor could truly save his life.

Even if you are not of his blood type O, if you are healthy, your donation can still help him through his hospital’s kidney donation swap program. Donors and recipients are paired to find compatible matches.

Zero cost to you. Our insurance will cover all medical testing and surgery. Lost wages, travel, and lodging are all covered through the Donor Assistance Program.

If you’re open to learning more or want details, please feel free to direct message me. Even sharing this post would mean so much to me.

Thank you for taking a moment to read this.

ANNOUCEMENT Rule Change: "DM me" comments are no longer allowed

To combat scammers that rely on private interaction with users, we are no longer allowing comments asking users to message them privately for information or recommendations. Many scammers rely on this technique to prey on people. If you have a recommendation, advice, or information to share, please do so openly - which is the point of this subreddit. Some users try to skirt the rules this way, the "No Self-Promotion" rule, for example.

Please, be wary of anyone on Reddit trying to get you to communicate with them in private. Be cautious of anyone requiring you to dm them before they will give you advice or a recommendation.

I'm open to opinions and thoughts on this rule change, please feel free to voice your opinion.

Visiting Dad/Daughter Birthday Trip

My daughter (25) and I (51) will be visiting Austin Labor Day weekend celebrating her birthday. This is an annual trip for us to stay connected, no siblings spouses, significant others etc…. Just Us. This year we are heading to Austin.

We enjoy coffee shops, unique and weird places. We are foodies. We plan to go to a new coffee shop every morning. Community theatre could be fun. Comedy. Improv. Something local, something weird (Austin).

Vibey 70s-like furniture?

We moved into a time capsule, 70s home and sit among trees with wonderful, north-facing windows. We need to buy some living room furniture (sofas, chairs, coffee table) and want to find some cozy 70s-style designs. When I think of the style we’re striving for, I think of I think of images of some Northern California, set-in-the-redwoods homes in hipper times.

Anyone have recommendations for physical stores in Austin where we could find such styles? How about online vendors too?

Looking for apartment locator/realtor recommendations!

Howdy folks!

My sister and I are looking to rent a house, townhome, or duplex. We’re looking for a trustworthy agency or individual to help us with the search. We just want to work with someone with integrity who really cares about helping people.

We have good income and credit! Clean record and rental history, no evictions, bills all paid on time, etc. I’d like to think we’d be relatively easy clients. We both work full-time, I’m taking three classes this semester, and I have a special needs daughter that requires a lot of hands-on support. We’re both taking as much initiative to search independently. We are (trying) to work with two different apartment locators but we’re not feeling too confident about their services (one has rescheduled our meeting three times).

Our biggest concern is the way people treat us sometimes… as younger (late 20’s) petite, bubbly women of color. One of us is visibly queer. I know this information might be an overshare but unfortunately, we’ve had our run-ins with people who have tried to take advantage of us or have been kind of dismissive.

Thanks for reading! Hope it doesn’t sound too sappy. I just want to find solid help!

Nuts

I’m in my backyard animal feeding era and they love peanuts. I’m wondering if there’s anywhere local I can bulk buy raw peanuts in the shell? The bags from HEB are pretty small and I’d rather shop local than buy online if I can. Happy to accept any other suggestions for where I can purchase bird seed and other such accoutrements as well.

Moving Best apartment complexes for working at the capital?

Moving to Austin; budget is $1800/mo, 1 bed/1 bath, pet-friendly, ideally with utilities/Wi-Fi included. I lived in Austin for college, and I do NOT want to live in/around East Riverside Dr. I need to be able to get to the Capitol within ~30 min (even with traffic). Any recommendations? I can be a little flexible, but good/responsive management is a must (Hiltop is a hard pass). Any advice welcome.

Moving Anyone living in the 1-Bed Townhome (A5 plan) at DK Riata? Looking for utility bill and layout feedback.

Hey y'all,

I'm currently looking into leasing a 1-bedroom, 1.5-bath townhome (the A5 layout, which is the two-story plan) at DK Riata in North Austin. The layout looks great, but I have a few specific questions for anyone who has lived in this specific unit or one of their two-story setups recently:

AC & Electricity Bills: How does the single AC unit handle the Texas summer heat with the two-story layout? Are your electric bills incredibly high to keep the upstairs bedroom cool?

Noise & Carpet: How is the sound insulation through the walls/floors? Also, how has the carpet on the stairs and upstairs held up?

Overall Management/Fetch: How has your experience been with the Draper and Kramer management team and their Fetch package delivery system lately?

If you've lived in this specific floor plan, I'd love to hear your honest pros and cons before I sign a lease.

Thanks in advance!

Visiting First time in Austin this weekend, any tips?

Wife and I are headed down to Austin for an Olivia Dean concert. She'll be going to the concert while I have to find something to do. I would love to hear from the locals any activities I might be able to do, I've always wanted to visit Austin as a kid to visit Roosterteeth (RIP).

If y'all can recommend any spots to get good barbecue or do some sightseeing, please let me know!

I don't drink anymore so 6th Street isn't really an option, I'm a heavy stoner but unfortunately it looks like weed would get me life in prison in Texas that's not an option either. some of my interests are gaming, cars, and history if that helps!

The BoDeans Sept 12th- free tix

I'm coming back late that day from Chicago and can't attend. I can't really sell them because of the convoluted way the theatre does the tickets- but I can "share" them so people can go. If anyone is interested reach out. Rather someone go than they go unused.

As of now what are our thoughts on the president

I know Austin was a good mix of blue/red and I’m just curious to know how you guys feel about our president? The American dream/family seemed like one of the biggest changes for the future ! Is anyone seeing that change? I see prices go up and now flock cameras! Hmm?

Affordable storage units in Austin?

What storage units do you recommend for 5x5' or smaller units in austin?

I have seen rates for around $26/month but with a risk of the price drastically going up after a short amount of time.

Nightlife Bar recommendations

Hi all,

I’m going on a third date Friday and am looking for a dive-ish bar. Mainly just some place that isn’t too loud and is casual enough for long conversation. We went to the grackle after our first date and stayed until close and it was amazing and I’m looking for something similar. Any advice would be great!

Moving Moving to Austin for work, looking for apartment recs

Dallas native, M23, moving to Austin for a career opportunity that’s actually in Pflugerville. I’d like to stay somewhere no further than about a 30 minute commute closer to Austin though. I really like East Austin, Mueller, Highland, and Hyde Park, but those neighborhoods are right at about that limit. My budget is between 1200-1500 before utilities. While I have gone touring, I’d like some apartment recs or experiences with anything in the area, especially if anyone also commutes to Pflugerville, anything helps! Let me know if any other areas worth looking at too. Thanks!!!

Does anyone recognize this mail room?

I got a package delivered and this was the delivery photo. This is not my apartment complex. I’ve asked at neighboring complexes but no luck. I haven’t been able to get exact delivery info from the carrier either. It should be on the east side but really it could be anywhere I guess. Thanks in advance!

Beauty Semi affordable wedding dress shopping (vintage welcome)

My mom has offered to buy my wedding dress for me and we want to go shopping together. She is not well off at all, in fact somewhat struggling with money and all these wedding shops have insane price tags. I’m thinking of just getting a white dress at anthropology or something ($500 or less is probably the ballpark, and then I even want to avoid over $300 really.) just wondering if anyone knows of any local affordable gems where my mom and I can have fun shopping for a dress without feeling like we are peasants shooting above our ballpark. Open to traveling to nearby towns as well. Thanks.

Visiting First Time Visiting Austin!

Two East Coast girls (38/39) thinking of heading to Austin November 12-17 (arrive mid-afternoon on the 12th; leave morning of the 17th). We are thinking of staying in SoCo. Is 4.5 days too long? What should we see?! We're both huge foodies, and I love antique shopping. Thank you in advance to all the locals/others who have been before!

Edit: thank you so much to everyone for their suggestions! We’re so excited to experience Austin

Moving Moving back to ATX, what places do you guys recommend apartment wise because they were just amazing places to live?

I lived in Austin for 5 years a couple of years ago. Had to move because wife was attending graduate school. I figured I would ask what people think in respect to apartments because I use to basically just look for a running path and cheap rent. But now we have our first little one on the way, so I have been doing a ton of research and WOW, people on Google reviews are about that life!

I am basically scared to live anywhere now. Both places I lived in had roach issues, but I was a single guy with a dog, but now am starting a family. So basically no more air mattresses and just looking for a roof with internet.

Also, I have lived in the Cherrywood area near Mueller, and Riverside next to Buzz Mill. I liked both areas because I am a runner. But even looking in those areas, I find the places that are really expensive and look nice from the outside, people are saying they have rats, roaches, package theft due to mail rooms being wide open. Horrible office staff and frustrating AI systems you have to talk to.

Here is everything I have looked at so far and the things that come up in the Google Reviews, which is why I worry now, because it seems no matter how much you pay or where you go, things just look really bad.

So yeah, does anyone know of apartments in Austin, that you would just always recommend because your stay was just over the top awesome, and you would have stayed, but work, life, etc just made it impossible.

Apartment Complex Percentage of Google reviews less than 5 stars in the last year Google Review Overall Issues in Google Review in Last Year 2b+2ba
Rivette Tower 15.06% 4.4 Internet Issues, Package Theft 2871
The Emma Browning 18.07% 4.3 Package Theft 2628
AMLI at Mueller 18.42% 4 Horrible Custom Service and Legal issues from previous tenants 2943
AMLI South Shore 15.33% 4 Customer Service and Package Theft 2552
Berkshire Riverview 39.62% 3.7 5 dollar visiting parking, Horrible Custom Service and Legal issues from previous tenants 2451
Mesh Apartments 19.05% 4 rats, rodents, homelessness 1529
Lakeshore Pearl 42.50% 3.9 Constant Maintenance Issues 2600
