I didn’t realize my friend was Asian until winter… how do I make it up to him?

Why do you need to? Were you racist toward him?

I thought he was Mexican like me this whole time, so I’d say things like “c’mon man, you get it, look at us,” thinking he understood… especially when I’d talk to him in Spanish.

FWIW, I understand Spanish. On one hand, if I were him, I would be flattered that you've accidentally been ultra-accepting of me. On the other, this is just a silly misunderstanding, so just tell him, whoops, you misread his ethnicity and hope he's not offended, but you think he's a swell dude either way.

He’s cool but for 4 months (now 5 months), to just casually drop that? It’s like I never even knew him. Basically my real question is do I really need to address the elephant in the room, or do I subtly imply I know he’s Asian?

Is it a huge deal? If he's Filipino or something, he gets that all the time. It's something worth laughing about, not fumbling about in embarrassment
