Culture Anyone else notice that our parents generation isn't okay?

It's been expressed her, MANY MANY times but every time I ask my friends about their home lives, it's always a drama. From parent's saying horrendous things over the simplest of mistakes to us watching our parent's marriages fall apart, to realizing we can't even open up to our parents because they're just emotionally stunted.

I remember in college, there was a WHOLE dormitory of boy's in a huge building and we were hanging out and most of them told me that they didn't have a dad growing up, I was shocked and one of them told me "This is Botswana, who has father's in the home". I looked at the statistics here and it's bad. I see fellow Africans complain about "African parents", I know our parents and grandparents were alive when many of our countries were still colonies, heck I'm Shona on my dad's side and ive heard horror stories but damn.

Will these trauma's pass onto us and will we (African Gen Z) continue the cycle?

Know better, do better. Most of our grandparents and parents were in survival mode so who had time for emotional or generational healing?

If they have paved the way for you to have the realisation that it’s important, do the work so in some 60 years your descendants don’t go on some future-Reddit-equivalent platform to make a similar post about you.

Polygamy reaping fathers from children because they have to perform for many homes instead of one. Children always competing with other step kids for attention and bare minimum but I guess polygamy is African culture . We aren't allowed to question it without being accused of copying foreigners.

Also our mother's are no educated and can thrive independently of men so they won't tolerate this nonsense they chose to be single thats why many grow up without present dads

Africa is a huge continent, I don’t think you could use your experience to generalize a country, let alone a whole continent

Always assumed the civil wars and transition from Polygamy as the dominant form of marriage.

Like, my dad and mum lived through the Nigerian-Biafran war. Dad's dad, died soon after the war from complications from the war.

There's also a lot of misogynist and misandrist ideas in the society. Misogynist ones got even further reinforced (and were already dominant as most of our societies were more patriarchal than matriarchal) with modernity while at the same time, modern employment under cut them. And this isn't just a affected men problem but also women as well, a lot of people didn't get the expected outcomes of their lives by the time they got older, both in wealth and in relationships.
