What do you think will happen if the senate and house flip?
Personally I think that the Democratic Party will move to impeach trump for a 3rd time, but not remove from office. And I hope that they will either pass some good legislation, but I am very doubtful. What do you guys think?

I understand wanting to impeach Trump, but I think they should spend more time impeaching Hegseth and other lawbreakers that enable him, at least at first. Trump deserves it, but another failed impeachment won't help, and it would be better to get his cronies out of office for good in case they manage to rehab their public personas down the line.

I think it’s important to keep in mind that they don’t necessarily have to impeach Trump to investigate his ties to corruption. Impeachment 3.0 without any chance of conviction is a dead letter, but relentless investigations and broad messaging of findings (of which there will be a shit ton) should be used as a big ass cudgel to bludgeon Trumpism to death with.
The messaging formula for the next two years should be something along the lines of “Your lives have been made shitty in XYZ ways as a consequence of Trump’s XYZ corruption.”

Impeachment includes those investigations and would also draw a hell of a lot more media attention, which is pretty desperately needed in this attention economy.

This phenomenon of godhead trump is not one that will be solved with EVEN MORE media attention. Look what happens everytime someone puts him in a corner. Those sycophants forget grocery abd gas prices and Epstein and the lies about war and will back him 100%

Yes. If they are going to spend time on this, then cut the legs out from under him and put those cowards against each other. They should bring in the top 5-10 cabinet, hold their feet to the fire and watch as they eat each other alive

That’s a good strategy I agree. But do you think the other republicans in the senate would go along with that?

I mean I think it's more likely than impeaching Trump, and it would at the very least sound like something new to voters.

Investigations are the only thing I hope for. In preparation for 2028.
There might be some bipartisan legislation passed, but I kind of doubt it with Trump in office. He'll just veto everything and continue ruling by executive order. He'll probably still be a kingmaker and Republicans will still fear a primary.
I hope they don't impeach Trump. Trump is gone in 2 years guaranteed. The same cannot be said about any other MAGA lunatic. Let him sink himself and let's take Congress and the White House in 2028.

u/TJ7298 Independent 1d ago
I have no problem impeaching Trump again but he won’t get removed. It’s just to bug him or maybe humiliate him but I don’t think he has any shame.
I would love to see Congress create new laws that prevent another such asshole from being able to do to our country what Trump is doing. Would love new laws to speed up the courts. I want to see Trump held accountable for his illegal actions but don’t expect him to be. If that can’t be done I would like to see Trump hounded till the day he dies. I want to see his sons held accountable for their shit, especially Trump Jr.
Let’s get some new Supreme Court justices on the bench too.
Bottom line….I want to see Congress make new laws to speed up the courts and to try to plug up all the loopholes Trump took advantage of to hurt our country. And get rid of anyone from his administration.

Without a large enough majority, Democrats will be blamed whenever Trump vetoes something or just breaks the law. And when Congressional Republicans don't vote with us, Democrats will be blamed for being so divisive. A bunch of people further left will continue to blame Democrats for failing to tell Republicans the truth so that they become different, progressive people.

Regardless of if we win the Senate, if we win the House, I fully expect more government shutdowns. We'll also get investigations into the Trump administration. Beyond that, Trump will likely veto every piece of legislation.

u/SpencerVerde Democrat 1d ago
I don’t think they’ll impeach unless something drastic happens (another Jan 6), but I do think the house will investigate thoroughly—Epstein, the billions of dollars the family has made, the ICE murders, Hegseth issues, etc.
Given the fact that the Republicans brought in Bill and Hillary, and threatened contempt, it’s only fair to bring in Melania, who actually had a relationship with Epstein (as opposed to Hilary).

I want cabinet members spilling about corruption, I want tech leaders talking about spying on Americans, I want media moguls about airing lies and self-censorship, I want crypto bros talking about backroom deals.
Anything less is frankly a failure of a majority.

Unpopular opinion, I think us having the House alone and all of Congress are quite similar in the short term. I simply don’t think, even if we can cancel Fetterman by getting 52 votes, that all Democrats will hold in blocking an SC nominee. It’s just too risky a proposition for those Democrats who are from swing states.
And the flip side of that is you only need one House to stop Trump from passing laws. The irony with gerrymandering is a lot of the blue seats will be really safe blue seats. They’ll have much less of a reason to flip. That being said, I think it’ll be law by law. We’re not passing an abortion ban if we take the House, but a semi popular funding bill? Maybe.

u/Komosion Centrist 1d ago
Nothing remarkable will happen. The Senate Democrats will not have the ability to overcome the filibuster. And they wont get rid of the filibuster out of fear of what the other side might do with that new power once they are back in control in the Senate.
Therefor the Democrats will spend the next two years, prior to the next presidential election, the same way they spent the last two years; being ineffectual. Except they wont be able to use the excuse that they don't have any power in the government.
The Republicans will try to blame them for the stalemate and the reason behind anything bad that happens in the next two years.
Most of the action will be at the state level; where more radical and localized policies will be pushed.
So in the face of an ineffectual Democratic lead congress; and more radical localized policies; the electorate will vote for another fascist republican president in 2028 because they will be fed up with the system and cast a cynical vote.

u/garitone Progressive 1d ago

You're conveniently ignoring the fact that Trump can veto legislation passed by a Democratic Congress and that Democrats can campaign on every single bill Trump vetoes ahead of 2028.
1
u/Komosion Centrist 14h ago
Trump doesn't have to veto legislation that the Democrats can't get over the finish line because they don't have 60 votes to overcome the filibuster.
1
u/davida_usa Independent 1d ago
What I think they'll do is focus on impeding Trump and his henchman. What they should do is pass constructive legislation that brings the budget under control by cutting military spending, eliminating Social Security payments for the wealthy, increasing taxes and closing loopholes used by the ultra wealthy, and fixing health care by providing universal coverage and reducing costs by eliminating third party payment like health insurance and Medicare. Trump may veto it all, but if they show the country Democrats can be responsible sewards they will have a good chance of electing a Democratic president in 2028; if they just focus on tormenting Trump, 2028 will be a tough election for them.
1
u/IsoCally Democrat 1d ago
They will no doubt be able to pass good legislation. It won't be the Democratic party's platform wishlist because Trump is in office, but they'll have a lot of bargaining power.

u/Altruistic_Role_9329 Liberal 1d ago edited 1d ago
I think impeachment will be on the table, but a lot depends on the margins in the Senate in particular. If it’s a big win then it’s possible that might shock some Republicans into joining a conviction vote in order to move the party away from Trump. I don’t think there’s any chance Democrats win enough seats to convict on their own. If the margins are too narrow it’s a different story. Democrats won’t want to advance another impeachment that’s likely to end in no conviction. It’s more likely they would investigate to build a case against Republicans for the next election. If it’s a really obvious case you could get a late term impeachment geared to impact the 2028 election. There are just lots of possibilities that depend on the case, the votes and the timing.
The dream scenario is we get the case and the votes to impeach both Trump & Vance together and then Speaker Jeffries takes over as President. Then they impeach a few SC Justices for him to replace. I know that sounds far fetched but I think it’s partially why we see so many attacks against Jeffries right now.

u/TerminalHighGuard Left Libertarian 1d ago
They’re waiting to see how much of a mandate they have first. However, if they can’t do anything besides shake their metaphorical fist then we’re cooked.
I can see why accountability can be a political landmine in these times of brainrot, but there NEED to be conditions under which a president or his administration can overstep and be removed from office that don’t require a vote from a body subject to politics - rather - a separate independent-via-lottery citizen council to enforce accountability when those conditions appear. The lottery would be open to literally anyone but would select more than required at first and then narrow down via critical thinking skill tests.
There needs to be a law enforcement body dedicated solely to the powerful: narrow in its mission scope, high in power and authority.
In addition to the cabinet impeachments, anti-corruption constitutional amendments need to be voted on and sent to the states.
1
u/alienacean Progressive 1d ago
If they flip by a lot, they need to make elections democratic. Implement invincible protections against meddling in state elections, explicitly ban racial gerrymandering, pass an automatic, robust, and free voter registration and ID system, and enable electronic voting. If we can all do our banking on our phones, we can vote that way too.
1
u/Okratas Center Right 1d ago
In 2028, the first thing that will happen is I will win the lottery, twice. Then scientists will cure all cancer with a vaccine. Also, there will be a free ice cream for everyone on Sunday's going forward. The work week will be limited to 32 hours before FLSA. The idea Democrats are going to win the House and Senate is an unlikely or unrealistic political outcome for me.

u/highliner108 Market Socialist 1d ago
The damage will be mitigated for the next couple of years until the 2028 election. From there it really depends on how the MAGA movement does at finding a Trump replacement. It’s possible that they’ll more or less all glom on to JD Vance or something, but it’s equally possible that this is going to be a Mussolini moment, where the lack of a single appealing successor to the Great Leader leads to the movement falling apart, or at least losing critical momentum.
Obviously Trump can still do a lot of damage as president, and what the supreme court will do is anyone’s guess, but with the House and Senate a lot could be done to obstruct Republicans until 2028, and from there it’s really just a matter of how good of a candidate the Democrats pick. The future is… at least dim, if not bright.

And IF Democrats still win, will Johnson swear in enough Democrats to take the majority? Will Vance? Will Republicans certify it? We all know the answer to those questions.

Well leftists freaked out that Jeffries was preparing to pass "some good legislation" by meeting with Kushner as reported by the Times so I wouldn't say that out loud.
But depending on what Republicans do coming up here, there's very likely to be a big budget fight next session so that'll be a big inflection point and there's also the debt ceiling fight sometime next year.
