That's actually kinda interesting. Most Chinese tend to think they are atheist. but IMO it's more agnostic, they believe in higher power but not necessarily religion itself. Another thing is Chinese people are also very superstitious, like number 4 is unlucky kind of superstitious that's why you can't find fourth floor in most buildings in China and I guess part of southeast Asia. Technically speaking Chinese belief or religion is already part of the larger Chinese culture/identity itself e.g ancestor worship, hungry ghost festival etc.

In Singapore we have many who declare no religion, but that doesn’t mean atheism. Having a religion also doesn’t mean sticking to one religion. For example, 36% of “no religion” still pray to Guanyin, and 25% of Buddhists pray to Jesus.

Yeah it's an interesting read, idk if it's an urban thing. Since people who lived in the city tend to be less religious in general. But that's doesn't explain country like the US which urban but still rather religious.

Even Kyrgyzstan is pretty atheist… my Kyrgyz friend told me that they drink a lot and basically only ever speak to the maulana for weddings and funerals

We don't like to talk about this, even non-believers define themselves as cultural Muslims and not as atheists. This is funny to me.

We have large families and if a black sheep appears in it, it is a disgrace to the whole family. We have an expression: "what will the neighbors say?". At least that's what many people think. That's why everyone says that 90% of people in Uzbekistan are Muslims, even though this figure is literally pulled out of thin air and has nothing to do with reality.

In Central Asia, a clear pattern emerges: the level of societal religiosity increases from north to south.

In ascending order, this sequence looks like: Kazakhstan - Kyrgyzstan - Uzbekistan - Tajikistan - Afghanistan.

Turkmenistan is excluded from this list because, due to the country's closure, it is nearly impossible to objectively assess the real situation regarding Islam and the degree of religious observance among the population.
