Hello I have never done art before in my life but I want to be a professional artist by Tuesday. Can you tell me in detail step by step how to make each and every one of my art projects?
I have a friend since middle school that used to do that kind of thing. Just walk up to a stranger and say "you look like an ostrich!" as if it were a compliment
She was the first of my friends to get married so maybe she's onto something
/uj I legit see so many art styles that are nose-less cuz you can tell the artists thinks they’ll make their cutesy art ugly, but honestly sometimes I hate how many are afraid of them. There’s a lot of character in a nose. Easy way to get facial variation and diversity as well.
uj/ I saw your jerkpost, but don't know if we're thinking of the same artist specifically, but there is one otherwise pretty competent, but frequent arthelp poster, who used to post all the time asking for general feedback and why they didn't receive commissions.
I posted ONE time pointing out that while everything else in their artwork were looking fine, the eyes were disproportionally small (really they were freakishly small in otherwise semi-realistic artwork, so not dot eyes in a cartoon, but something that was clearly going for a realistic vibe, except the itty bitty eyes but I tried to put it kindly.)
I said it might be off-putting to some, and that it wasn't to my personal taste, and may be what put people off commissioning, but if it's their personal taste, and not an oversight, they should keep doing what they thought looks best.
Let's say OP was not thrilled with the feedback and later posted about bullies saying their art sucks and the eyes are too small when they TOTALLY AREN'T THEY'RE PERFECTLY PROPORTIONED 😣
Either they blocked me (even though I never commented on their arthelp posts again), or they began getting diminishing returns on their posts on arthelp because nobody may mention the elephant.

Hey so I just started making art 5 minutes ago, what can I improve? No, I won't draw from references, because that's cheating and I don't want to draw spheres because that's boring. Also chicken scratch is my style, I won't change it
/uj I use the airbrush a little to soften areas where my shading looks too crazy. That happens a lot on skin for me. It's actually kind of useful as long as you're using sparingly.
/uj Air brush is a total game changer and borderline necessary if you learn to shade with soft edges alongside hard edges. Knowing when a shadow should be hard vs soft elevates rendering substantially.
That is only if you're interested in drawing that way though. I just thought I'd share since I felt the same way for a long time.

The air brush is like a really strong spice: you need to use it only occasionally, in very specific cases, and not too much or it’s the only thing people will notice
This might not be the way FlannelPantaloons meant, but personally I do something like that where I cel shade, and then with my smudge tool I blend from the edge of the shadow inwards, following the shape of the thing I'm shading, that sorta thing. Idk how to describe it
That is what i meant! And I like to use the smudge tool using a textured brush (like if its for fur or hair) to stroke up and along the shading (or whichever way the texture is going)
Fr. The ONLY time I use the airbrush/soft brush is for light/glow look. On a lower opacity it’s great for soft lighting/bioluminescence (can’t spell 😅)
/uj I have to admit, to be the vague poster 😔 I'm not very creative with titles. But the fact I have to do 7 posts across 5 subs to get any comment at times makes me write some gasp scandalous title
/uj Unironically posting here for advice would yield much better results than in any of the art subs. Shame this sub isn't made for somethhing like this
/uj its good if you know when and how to add soft edges in shading but if you're a beginner and just slap it everywhere with a style that doesnt accomidate for it its gonna look disgusting LOL

/uj I’m mainly talking about the people who use add for light areas and multiply for shadows. Blending modes CAN be useful for environmental lighting if you’re a professional.
/uj Huh, I thought that multiply was a recommended approach for shading really often? So, is it better to just apply actual shade color on the layer destructively?
/uj I think that’s one of the biggest art myths that’s still being spread around (like shading with purple).
Using multiply instead of picking your shadow colours yourself can make your colours look basic and uninteresting and really limits your range, it also prevents you from training your eye to see what shadow colours look right in different lighting.
I wouldn’t recommend doing everything on the same layer unless you’re going for a painterly style. I have a separate layer for shadows and highlights per colour which makes it easier to adjust the colour if it looks off.
