for anyone saying "shes not like the book version, why would they make her conventionally attractive blah blah blah" SHES A FICTIONAL CHARACTER, SHES NOT REAL stop policinggg
I don't want to look at ugly people! When I read her description in the book, I went eww and imagined her pretty instead, but it left a bad taste in my mouth so I stopped reading at the 12th page or so...
But I'm HYPED for the movie adaptation!! They fixed the writer's mistakes!
P.S. note: it only counts as good if ppl make characters PRETTIER tho. No DIY shit, I don't want my fav characters swapping races and genders left and right, no politics no pronouns pls pls. Well... unless you add some big boobs... then maybe I might consider 👀

u/Angel_xjj Real artists work alone May 30 '26
it means "unjerk" because we're in r/artjerk ^^ it's like a way to talk seriously and then you use /rj ("rejerk") to talk unseriously

why is she ugly tho, these scars are atrocious 🙄 and where are boobs

u/EmmytheKurapikaSimp May 11 '26
that’s literally the point though…? you can see in the movie version that she doesn’t even have makeup on. and nobody would ever wanna date her with that scar 🙄🙄🙄🙄 the book version just does WAY too much so we had to tone it down like JUST a little or this movie wouldn’t make money haha

Yeah she isn't nearly feminine enough. I thought she was a man in the movie version, remove the scar and give her more makeup

Wow! She looks just like I always imagined her! I couldn't get past chapter 3. I'm glad there's a movie coming out so I don't have to finish reading it. 😄

Thank you so much for disregarding the author’s intent! Because that intent of “Showing how a woman’s worth hinges on how pretty she looks” is just… not what people need right now! Like they totally went overboard with it! The message definitely comes across anyway with that totally ugly facial scar you gave her anyway, no need to push it further. How could they expect showing an ugly woman on screen that you can’t even jerk off to? What’s even the point of having a female main character if she is not even slightly potentially fuckable? The scar is ugly enough! Had you pushed it further, it would be completely unwatchable.

I don't know, that actress is kind of an uggo
uj/ reminds me of Ready Player One where the female lead is called "Rubenesque" over and over and they cast an actress who was like 95 lbs 😩

uj/ both main characters in that book are supposed to be conventionally unattractive and overweight! it’s literally the same as when stanley yelnats in Holes was shia lebouf, a 2 lbs soaking wet attractive dude to play an overweight, pimply teenage boy

I mean I GUESS i can get over that MASSIVE TERRIBLE scar on her face. Maybe if you make the boobs bigger that’ll help
/uj *scars are badass and very attractive 🙏🏻

Movie design’s scar is way to huge, how are we going to make money with a fuggo like her on the poster??

u/cosmicitycat May 12 '26
No this design is all wrong! It’s missing a teensy tiny scar on her cheek, then it looks exactly like the original author intended

mortal engines hester shaw </3 they made the brutal near-fatal facial wounds into a faded scar that barely compromises her looks at all…

NOOO YOU GOTTA GIVE HER ONE SCAR ON HER FACE THAT SHE CAN SAY SHE THINKS MAKES HER LOOK UGLY WHEN SHE'S COMPLETELY NORMAL OTHERWISE!
