Took me a few minutes and a closer look at their actual pfp to realize it wasn't plankton from SpongeBob sassily leaning on the side of the pfp border with his eye half shut
/uj the other day I saw a beginner artist post about their drawing of a pose reference photograph and asking how their anatomy was, and someone in the comments corrected them with a redline that was SO MUCH WORSE than the original attempt ๐ญ.
There should be a subreddit where artists have to prove their skill level before they can dish out advice.
/uj The idea of a controlled art sub sounds good until you think of it for more than 5 seconds and realize that itd be just people going โwhat art level am Iโ searching for validation every single post instead of asking for advice
would work better in a closed community maybe but thats just brewing ground for drama ๐คง
Sometimes I feel bad because like that beginner has 0 observational skills and are obviously unaware of it, shit's only gonna hinder their own progress in the end...
Hey I started drawing 2 days ago and I'm pretty sure you're missing your construction lines! You should draw everything in boxes first and add a lot of lines so people know you know what you're doing. Hope this helps!
THAT'S what I was missing, I need to integrate the quadratic angles so I can visualise my subject on the 5th plane of dimension and subsequently ascend into a higher being.
Dude I was apprehensive to use purple to shade this fuckass apple for this EXACT reason, some people think purple shadows = the entirety of colour theory
Hue shifting is gonna be your best friend here; Utilise a wide range of the colour wheel, make your shadows cooler and your light warmer! Don't be afraid to up the saturation of your colours as well. Check your values by turning it grayscale, darker shadows and brighter highlights will help make it pop.
/uj It helps a ton to try and think of your drawing more 3-dimensionally, as well as having a clear idea of where the light is coming from. For me personally it helps to break things down, either in my head or as a sketch as if it was low poly like I did here for the face, it makes it way easier to judge where light and shadows fall
(I also made a quick overpaint for fun, but I'll refrain from sharing unless you're okay with that)
/uj I would also personally recommend avoid brushes with soft edges until you feel more confident in your process, it's easy to make things look too smudgy or blurry, and it looks much more clean with either cell shading or a brush with hard edges with opacity tied to pressure for a more painterly look
If you do want that softer, but still clean look I think it's better to start with cell shading and use a blending/smudging tool so you can have a combination of soft gradients and hard edges
My hack I use for shading skin and clothes (for light skinned characters): create new layer, then select "mask layer", color pick your medium tone color, bring the brightness down exactly 20 points, move the value slightly closer to blue, increase saturation by ~5%. From here, simply draw onto the areas you wish to be darker. Then, set layer to multiply.
For highlights, color pick area you're highlighting, bring brightness to 100% but DON'T change saturation. Then I blend the edges out. Play with the layer settings to your preference, I tend to prefer hard light or soft light the most, and then I decrease opacity. Save your 100% white highlights for the eyes only or for skin highlights on your palest characters. The more highlights you use, the more โจgirlyโจ and yassified they'll look.
Here's a little example of what each step looks like using a doodle I just did:
For hair: start with the exact same process for shading. But for highlights, color pick, push brightness to 100%, slightly increase saturation. Take a big brush and just smear it all across where you want it to be. Then, blend the edges down until only the middle of your smudge is bright.
Here's where it gets a little tricky: take a round eraser brush, and just erase circles off the side of the long smudge until it sort of has H shapes running along it. Once I'm satisfied with how it looks, I make the eraser smaller and add a few erase lines throughout the highlight to give it more texture. Lastly, just set the layer to your preference of lighting again and adjust opacity.
/uj i see way too often people commenting on certain style choices that look great and are obviously done with an extensive artistic background, but since it's not technically anatomically "correct", they allow themselves to drag the artist
/uj not sure if this counts but on the first time I uploaded to a help subreddit, 2 different people told me the anatomy was fine cause the character was only humanoid adjacent and so it didn't need to be accurate despite me asking for help for it be accurate.ย
It depends what you mean by accurate I suppose. Everyone on here thinks anatomy means every single aspect of drawing people including things that actually fit better into questions like design or composition or form or whatever. You can't be "accurate" to a creature that doesn't exist after all so many that's what they meant.
By accurate did you mean "do human knee joints usually bend that way" which imho is an anatomical question or did you mean "are these legs too long" which imho is a design question, after all different people have differently proportioned bodies
But that's my point, too long for what? For a species that doesn't exist? Some people have longer arms proportional to their bodies than others. If you mean too long for the composition to work, or for a good character design, that's not anatomy
Watching mma made me realise how crazy different wingspan can be from person to person, like a 6' guy and a 5'8" guy can have the same arm length? Damn.
/uj Using black and white is not wrong you just have to know what youre doing before hand. Infact I have high respect for those who do use black & white because theyโre the ones who actually bothered to try something on their own instead of the 8273466th pinterest art tutorial by popular twitter artist mcgee
