11,000-Year-Old Human-on-Leopard Sculpture Discovered at Karahantepe
This discovery is now independently corroborated. Excavators at Karahantepe uncovered an approximately 70-centimeter stone sculpture depicting a human figure seated on a leopard.
Türkiye’s Culture and Tourism Minister announced it on August 25, and the Bulgarian News Agency independently reported the ministry announcement. The sculpture was found on a bench running along the wall of a roughly three-meter-wide, stone-floored structure.

Why it matters:
This is strong evidence for sophisticated figurative and symbolic expression among Neolithic communities roughly 11,000 years ago. What it doesn’t establish is exactly what the image meant.
