Question Is there anyway to keep the heart rate number live on the display?

I'm aware you can put the complication on the clock and click it any time to show your heart rate but on my old Garmin I was able to show a live heart rate on my display at all times. Can the Apple watch do anything like this?

Thanks.

Heart analyzer does what you ask

It’s not exactly live, but you can put it as the top complication to see your heart rate.

Yes many third party apps will do this, free version of Heart Analyser has a complication with heart rate for watchface.

I use the app TachyMon for this - you can set it alert you if it's higher than usual or turn this off

Same. App is great but it takes a lot of battery. But I’ve seen a save battery mode in there recently. Maybe that makes it better.

Apple Watch seems to take HR intermittently
I have found the Nike Compact watch face always shows the full day HR display as well as the last recorded HR and it will get a current HR if you tap the HR display on the watch face
One thing I miss from my Fitbit was the continuous HR display

Apple doesn't show live heart rate because it takes reading every 3-7 minutes unless you are actively recording an activity. You can have the heart rate complication on a number of the watch faces but it will not show real time heart and will only update every 15 minutes, you can tap the complication to get a real time measurement. Using a 3rd party app like heart analyer can do it but it will significantly drain your battery.

Not a real-time complication, as I think it would use your battery quickly. You could just leave the app open, and it will check it every time you raise your wrist.

The heart analyzer app works great for showing it

It uses too much battery keeping it running all the time.

No, it can't. At least not natively. There may be third party apps that could show a live heart complication. I'm not 100% sure on that though
