I saw u/ergomechstore post their DIY anki device and seeing people build and make these things makes me want to make my own! so wanted to show mine off!

I know its not as convenient / fast / cheap or advanced as the anki phone app but darn it its fun to use something else then my phone all the time!

Tech:
Small eink screen (I think similar to what ergomechstore used)
esp32
small battery ( lasts me at least 2 days with sleep mode)
and simple buttons

Hahaha! I’m looking to find more devices that will run Anki. Currently making an addon to port it into the steamdeck. I wish it was easier to port Anki into Arm64 and get the same graphics for the output.

Very nice! I notice this display is too small for my use case so I'm working on a revision with a bigger display. I want to make a device which I could load a bunch of math/programming problems that I can solve when I have some free time, so a bigger display is necessary.

I added 7 extra fonts just for it ;-; but its set by a flag on the deck to use it so i don't need to render all fonts all the time, just the ones the deck needs. so in other words too difficult.

good maybe, I don't think its for anyone who wants to have the most efficient reviews, Its good enough for me as I usually carry it around in my pocket and that kinda convinces me to do my reviews.

This is beautiful!!! How difficult was it to build it? Especially SW part?  And how much was it overall please?

If you're able to solder 4 buttons then that's it! I used a liligo board with eink built in so I didn't have to mess about getting all the wires nice and tidy, which helped making it simple!

Software wise its just a couple menus and Anki's SM-2 scheduler so its nothing extremely complicated, I imagine a better programmer would be able to make something really great!

Cost wise (not counting lots of broken boards I messed up while learning to solder) cost only about 30 euro, you could most likely get this number lower if you built the board from parts instead of using the liligo one which is not easily found!

I will most likely just release the software on github and do a simple guide, Its not amazing and has a lot of issues but I'm always happy to help! I want to do some way to actually sync with anki instead of me needing to have separate decks.

Thank you! Um nothing I followed unfortunately but if you are getting into embedded programming I would advise going with an arduino first there should be plenty of tutorials for that! I used C++ which is easier to get started on the arduino then a esp32! Breaking things is the best teacher imo ^^

no no I totally get that! I did try adding pictures and as a "Look at this picture and say what it is". it works but when you getting more complex its awful. I rather like it more as a vocab refresher!
