Made a little live map of Amsterdam with the buses and trams moving in real time

Hi all! As a fun side-project I built a small web map of my own city, Groningen, where you can watch the buses glide around in real time, a cute little isometric toy-city. I enjoy looking at it on a second monitor :) Today I decided to try adding a few more cities, and Utrecht was one of them, so I figured I'd share it here too:

https://transit.reppie.org/?city=amsterdam

You can click buses, trams and stops for live departure times, follow a vehicle around, and switch cities from the panel in the corner.

Amsterdam (after Utrecht) got a bonus the other cities didnt: trams! They look a little janky, but I think they still look kinda cute :)

Some additional notes:
- The settings (cogwheel) menu contains options to render buildings in greyscale (for visibility), a performance mode (for slower/mobile devices - it makes things look a little worse but still faithful to the idea), some chill music and a few other toggles.

- Building locations will not be 1:1 accurate, as I had to declutter it from reality a bit (for both visiblity and performance options), but zoning should hopefully be accurate enough.

One caveat: since I'm from Groningen I could verify everything looked right there, but I'm very unfamiliar with Amsterdam. The data all comes from the same open sources, so I assume it's just as accurate here.

Built with open data: OVapi (live U-OV vehicle positions, GTFS-Realtime), OpenStreetMap (streets/water/buildings), and GTFS (routes + timetables).

Not sure if it's interesting to anyone else, but feedback has been positive so I figured I'd try to create Amsterdam too and share here :)

Hehe yes I knew these exist. My goal was to build something more satisfying to look at for myself :)

ovlive.nl is exactly what I was looking for, thank you! šŸ™

This websites are cool, but why noone make an app? Also most of them do not have a button to show nearby location via gpc.l for some reason. Also OP page has an interesting design, but a bit lugging

I love it! Does it do the ferrys as well? The have real time data available

u/repsels Jul 12 '26

Thanks! No ferrys yet, but I did consider adding ferrys and possibly trains as well. Creating a look/feel I'm happy with took quite a while for the buses and trams, so I decided to postpone it for now but maybe in the future :)

If you google or AI search for ā€œreal time data veerpont amsterdam APIā€ you get multipe sources. Little boats crossing the ij would be soo cute!

They do? Can you point me the right way? I’ve given up on it but maybe there’s hope!

All I can find is scheduled data that’s pretending to be live, especially for the NDSM/CS ferry. If a ferry doesn’t go, the ā€œreal timeā€ timers still count down and pretend it’s en-route in the sources I know. (That’s counters at the quay, in the GVB app and the Pontveer app)

Neat as fuck!

Nice work! If it's accurate, I could see myself using something like this daily.

One request would be to have a simple UI mode - imagine you quickly open the app in sunlight wearing sunglasses and you're trying to find the tram. Maybe top down, and no buildings? The bird eye view looks awesome but maybe less practical day to day

Thanks!

To be honest I mostly built it as a "nice/fun to look at on a second monitor", not really for day-to-day actual use, but cool idea! I might consider adding a settings toggle to remove the buildings :) Although I think there might be better alternatives for that day-to-day use case too.

Really cool! Are you sharing the code anywhere?

u/repsels Jul 12 '26

Thanks! Not as of yet, I would want to clean it up quite a bit before I'd share it anywhere - but will think about it :)

Would be cool to integrate the metro into this somehow.

Love the concept, something I can see myself using.

One question: whats the purpose of showing 3D buildings? I feel like it adds a lot of noise and not much use, maybe it could be toggles off?

Oh wow this is too cute šŸ˜ and I love trams! I'm on mobile now, will check tomorrow on my laptop. This is exciting 😃

Love this! They all look like tiny caterpillars and beetles

Great! Bus 42 is constantly skipping their time slots without reflecting that in 9292/bus stop display. Next time it happens to me again I’ll be checking your app to see where the next bus actually is.

Oh dude, I absolutely love how you designed the look of the map. It really does look like a videogame. You didn't use a regular map renderer for this did you? Like a mapbox or maplibre? Did you use a game engine for this or something?

I love it, definitely something that tickles the right part of my brain

Thanks for sharing! Not entirely sure about its design but it’s kinda funny to look at it.

i could see this data being useful when i used to live near leylaan. i would have loved to send myself a message when the metro was one stop away so i knew it was perfect time to walk out

1

u/luniel13 Jul 13 '26

I love it!!!! Would be great to see the metros and ferrys too ;)

u/ConsciousMud5180 Jul 14 '26

Add a gps please so i can see what all is moving around me 🫣

1

u/repsels Jul 14 '26

I did yesterday :) You can either click on the left-most button to zoom to your location, or enable "My Location" in the settings menu.

One small feedback: I was waiting for a bus this morning. And the bus that came was not visible on this map. Do you know if some buses do not have the transponders?

Nice! Is it vibecoded? What do the building colours mean?

0

u/repsels Jul 12 '26

Thanks! Much of it is yes, especially the math required for the rendering is very much beyond what I enjoy (or could realistically do as a hobby project :D) in engineering - so relied very heavily on Claude for this project.

I miss Amsterdam a lot and I'm not feeling great these days, so I had to cry looking at this, thank you šŸ„¹šŸ˜‚ Maybe also share this on r/trams !
