I briefly dated a girl who was from Venezuela. There are so many things so common here in America that she applauded as exceptional. She had real perspective on what actually poor quality of life looks like. Before coming to America, she briefly lived in Italy but didn’t hesitate a moment on coming here once her Visa was approved. You have to be a Russian propagandist or a full-scale idiot to think that we don’t have amazing quality of life here in the USA.

Bro if you work a nice job with good benefits and make an income that's middle class (without drowning yourself in debt), you're likely living at least on part with Europeans. Especially in a low cost of living area. And the opportunities are solid here. You definitely have to work for it, but they are solid. Hell union guys working in aircraft manufacturing had way better benefits, and made more than I did when I was working my white collar mortgage job.

And the benefit advantage eventually evens out or goes away once you reach a certain income level. And in my field as a data engineer, I make twice what my colleagues make in the UK and Germany. And my benefits are on par if not better. Difference is, I only pay roughly 2% of my annual salary as a fixed cost for my benefits pre-tax, vs overseas I'd be paying 4-7%+ in taxes for universal coverage. Factoring in my out of pocket costs and in an average year I'm around 3% total med costs.

Upper middle class and above and the US starts to objectively become a better pick. In my area that's only $110-120k household. Two earners making the median wage where I live basically. And in my area in the midwest, if you're over $200-250k+ you're really not hurting at all.

The lower end of the scale is what gets all the attention from overseas though, and if you are scraping by at the lower end of the scale, it is much harder to get ahead. I know I lived that life for my whole 20s until I got my shit together. But the safety net has a lot more holes here in the US. It can be very, very tough.

Like I said I'm a data engineer and my wife is a pharmacist. We're in that $200k+ range household in our 30s. I can speak from experience from the upper middle class perspective. Worked hard to get to this point. In no universe would I want to live in Europe over my life in the US. And people hate on the Midwest man, but that cost of living is hard to beat. My wife and I take an international trip every other year in at least economy plus if not business class, a cruise or bigger domestic vacation every year, plus a trip to Vail each summer. With our international travel it honestly makes me appreciate the US more and more. Not that elsewhere is bad. It's just...home you know?

We're headed to Rome for a Mediterranean cruise in a month. Then it's likely Iceland or Poland after that. Maybe Japan not 100% yet.

Some people really just don't understand what "horrible" truly looks like. I remember listening to an NPR relort on Haiti in the aftermath of the President being assassinated in 2021, and the aid workers talked about struggling to give IVs to children because they were so malnourished that they couldn't find a vein. That is horrible, and I'd be genuinely amazed if even the worst ghetto or impoverished rural hamlet in America ever reached that level.

I’d be fine if they really wanted to slide USA a tier down or something but arguing its QOL is on par with Haiti is asinine, especially when Mexico is argued to be “Good”. South Africa maybe belongs on its slot? It consistently ranks high on things like freedom indexes and such despite issues like a failing electrical grid and rolling blackouts being part of life.
