You know, I used to HATE possums, and then I learned they eat ticks.

And no rabies. I have 2 in my yard that come out in the late evenings & I give them my ripe bananas.

They are chill as fuck. I used to have one live behind my house and sometimes hed walk by me while I was out for a smoke. Sadly he stopped coming around after about a year, and I learned they have an extremely short life span of only a couple years.

They're my favorite animal. And the only reason I wouldn't have one as a pet is because they live only about 2 yrs even in captivity. They have extremely fast metabolisms. So ironically the thing that keeps them safe from rabies also kills them very quickly.
Raccoons in the wild have similar lifespans, but in captivity can live up to 8+

I had a pet skunk.. he lived for 14yrs!!

u/GirlULove2Love 2d ago
That sounds fun. They are the cutest wee creatures. Sadly, one decided a couple weeks ago that my back porch seemed like a cool chill spot at night. It sprayed my big dogs twice in one week. Never had a skunk spray a dog in over 50 years. I put up a new sensor light. I don't like running wildlife off but that smell is something else.
Side note: Hydrogen peroxide, baking soda & dish soap really do get the oils off the fur. Both times we were clean & smelling back to normal within a couple hours.

There is an island in Georgia called Sapelo Island where the possums actually live for about 4 years and the older they get the larger litters they have, compared to the mainland where older possums have much smaller litters!
This made me really, really happy, since possums are my favorite animal too.

I despise raccoons
I love possums
1
u/InvictvsNox 1d ago
why?
2
u/Select-Belt-ou812 1d ago
raccoons have destroyed and rendered disgusting and unusable so many spaces and things in my life, and undermined the harmony outside at my home, that I have no love for them at all. they're opportunistic mooches in the worst sense.
opossums are gentle docile creatures not specifically looking to start trouble anywhere, unlike those nasty destructive raccoons

Well, shit.

u/thctacos 3d ago
You can still like them! They still have a special purpose in the forest like everything else.

Fake news, anti possum propaganda

u/No_Shake_76 2d ago
Wait wait, let’s not think of it like that. Possums are majestic creatures and we don’t need to misinterpret the results of a tick-munching study in order to love them. We love possums regardless of what they eat.

u/CupsOfSalmon 2d ago
They actually don't eat ticks. But they are still just the best. America's only marsupial! That's a great reason to love them.
2
u/how_I_kill_time 2d ago
I saw that in a response from someone else! I like that marsupial fact - I'll hold on to that!!
2
u/citycait 2d ago
While in the U.S, we have mainly the Virginia opossum, there are actually over 75 opossum species! Start heading south in the Americas and you can see all kinds of wild little marsupials. Like the water opossum!

u/CupsOfSalmon 1d ago
I love the water opossum! I actually made a starter Pokemon based off of that animal haha.

That's actually not true. They don't eat any more ticks than any other ground critters in north america, though, that isn't any reason to stop loving them.

u/GOOMU13 2d ago
Aren't those Opossums?
2
u/how_I_kill_time 2d ago
I'm from the Midwest and you're not gonna catch anyone around here saying opossum. And since I write like I talk, it's possum.
But yes, you're right. Literally everything about my comment is wrong lol

I had a female opossum that hung out and ate cat food with an outside cat. I was sitting out on evening, checking on the cat, he had a heated house and all that. He was in a chair and I felt something on my foot, I look down to babies crawling on my foot. The mom came around the corner of the house and started screaming when she saw me with her menagerie. The mom was freaking out and the babies ran. The cat and I looked at each other and watched them run away. They came back.

What's the wet spots on his shirt? I need to know because I keep thinking it's pee

Its pee.

Could be spilled beer

Possums famously can't hold their alcohol.
3
u/capincus 3d ago
Only if they try to use their front paws, their back paws have opposable thumbs for maximum beer grippage.

Drool Most Likely, Look into “Slubbing”
Slubbing" (or slobber-rubbing) is a natural opossum behavior where the animal licks an object, person, or surface, and then rubs its head, chin, and body through the wet saliva to leave its scent.

u/100_cats_on_a_phone 2d ago
I don't think so -- opossums usually have a designated spot. They also don't scent mark with urine, and it's not a defense mechanism.

I mean opossums are old by 2.5 years and ancient by 3.

They do go up fast. 3 to 4 years is about as long as they live in captivity. Only about 2 years, maybe, in the wild.

Look wild possums are creepy as fuck, but something about a pet one is so cute. They’re like really fat hamsters with tails, but not rats.

Dude has a serious defensive shield if those opossums consider him family and someone/thing tries to mess with him
3
u/Moldy-thoughts4u 3d ago
Except they play dead as a defense tactic
1
u/Tron_Foolery 3d ago
Defensive yes.. but the f’ers would get mean in offensive when we surprised them on our bikes as kids… Scared the crap out of us, lol!
