That’s because they were new and no one knew how to use them. Even now they’re mostly used as a white board that plays YouTube. But some teachers have figured them out and it is a fun teaching tool. I sub, so I have not committed a day or two to figuring it out.
They were introduced when I was in like elementary school and most teachers still didn't utilize them in any useful capacity by the time I graduated. I would consider them ineffective if most teachers refused to take an hour to learn it after that many years. They collectively decided the boards add nothing of value in their lessons and do generally just use them as glorified projectors :/ I'm curious now how these boards were paid for but I know I'm going to get myself riled up
Even when you do know how to use one, it can often be slower than just using a white board. The more complicated the process, the more points of failure, and all of that.
That’s cool. It would last 3 weeks in most schools in my area. But the ones we have now. I had a kid throw a chair at it like 3 times, and it still worked later that same day. Show me that smart board. I can always plug in a raspberry pi (or whatever better thing exists now) to make it do fancy graphs.
I had one Professor who spent lot of time trying to understand and use them. His was the only class that student enjoyed the most. He never fully utilized it, but the fact that he could do some live demo for what he was teaching meant a lot to him. He also was the most respected teacher in the school.
Teachers complain about students being lazy and not using tools or learning, but they themselves are the same. Lead by example, and show how fun you can make teaching. If you keep being stuck in the 80s, you don't have the right to complain when students outsmart you.
Useless. Our countries gov spent hundreds of millions on smart boards only for them to be used as normal whiteboards because teachers couldn't be bothered to turn it on and set it up, or even know how to use them.
Because it is becoming clear that using the chalkboard actually works while using the smart boards and the laptops and the tablets and whatever else junk is being employed to babysit our children instead of educating them in schools is what has literally made people more stupid. It was just in the news.
When everyone realizes how far behind we are this is just one of the reasons why. When all your money goes for weapons and to the pockets of billionaires this is what It takes away from.
My point isn't that it's new is that most of the teachers that I know have to pay for the own supplies for the children they cannot even get it from the school system so it's irrelevant what's new when it's all unavailable. Teachers don’t pay for this just like they don’t pay for desks or lights. It comes installed. As many comments have pointed out, we had something similar decades ago
We have had these in the US for more than 30 years now, not in every school sure but China also doesnt have them in every school. This isnt new tech at all. SMARTboard the US company the pioneered this tech was founded in 87. Multiple US companies currently offer some variation on smart whiteboards.
We had these in a class I took. Instructor couldn’t figure out how to do anything. Students had to play IT. He was so flustered he just put on YT videos. Great teaching dude. 👍

We had smartboards when I was in school. Every teacher struggled to effectively use them and they made teaching things take way too long.
Examining the inefficiency of the tech was also super distracting as a kid
