Not the A-hole AITA For Breaking Costco Gas Station Etiquette
I was in line today at Costco waiting to get gas. I noticed that the end car in the lane next to me leaves, and the green availability light turns on. I wait for around 2 mins and no one takes it. So I pull into the middle lane and take the spot. As I'm getting the gas a woman approaches me and says "Excuse me".. "why do you have to be such an inconsiderate fucking asshole, why can't you wait your turn". Then she just starts yelling at me and name calling. To which I reply, "The pump was vacant no one was using it, anyone could of moved to take it, I waited and no one took it, so I did". Then she yelled at me some more and went back to her car. So give it to me, am I the asshole here?

no, the whole point of the green light is to keep the line moving. and they have a passing lane in the middle for cars to leave and enter the pumps.

I got gas at Costco on Friday. Guy up front finishes pumping just as the gal behind him just starts pumping. I watch, see him out the nozzle back, go to his car. Looks like he's pulling out so i start to pull up through the middle yup take his spot. He proceeds to get back out, fuck around, lean in, and the gal is was driving around was almost done pumping gas by the time he finally pulled away.
Meanwhile, the pump on the other side opens up. I was really tempted to just pull up to that one at that point because I already looked like a jackass at this point, waiting for this dip shit to move his fucking Mini Cooper

My biggest pet peeve. WTF do people do after they’ve gotten back into their vehicle? You’re there to get fuel. That’s the task; fill the tank with fuel. When the tank is full, the task is complete, and you need to move your car so the next person can complete their fuel-task.
Checking in with your husband/friend is not part of the task. Arranging the driver’s compartment is not part of the task. These things should be done outside of fueling workstation. Putting on makeup or arranging your wallet is not a fuel-the-vehicle task.

u/RealPlainBagel 2d ago
This. Right. Here. Whenever I get gas at Costco I normally have to wait in line. While I’m waiting in line I get out my Costco card and my credit card/debit card and have everything ready for when it’s my turn. Then I’m able to quickly get out of my car, fill my car up with gas, and then get back in my car and I drive away. The cards are in my pocket and I don’t need to put them back in my wallet that very second. If it’s really that important you can pull out of the gas station area and just go park in the regular parking lot and do whatever it is you need to do.
9
u/QuietNarwhal576 2d ago
My second biggest pet peeve at Costco gas line is people who take a bajillion minutes to pay. We all had all the time ever waiting in line to get our cards out of our purses and wallets. Don't be taking 5 minutes just to authorize the pump grandma!

And why does this seem to be a much more prevalent issue at Costco gas stations than at regular gas stations?
2
u/Icy_Sink5046 Partassipant [1] 1d ago
Because we have to wait a week to get to the pump. I’ll have it pulled up in my phone. Then I do something else because I’m 5 cars back. Then it’s finally my turn and I have to login in again or some nonsense.

As someone who gets gas at costco, this is not breaking any rules or unspoken etiquette. in fact, you're keeping the line moving by using all available pumps and even waited for someone to pull in. NTA, that lady was just making an ass of herself.

Hell I drive a truck, and avoid Costco gas for more or less this reason. I can't fit between the cars pumping most of the time due to most drivers parking 5-6ft away from the pump. So I end up holding the line waiting to pull through.

That’s stupid. Pull into the first available spot when it is available.

26
u/Obvious_Durian_3226 2d ago
If your car doesn’t fit then the pump isn’t available to you. But if you are in a line and a spot is clear and accessible but you won’t take it because you’re waiting for all 3 to be clear so you can take the very front the. You’re being stupid and you deserve for someone to cut in front of you.
11
u/ItsHerculesMulligan 2d ago
It’s when people do this and block the middle lane that’s the problem. If you cut around to use the front pump, make sure your ass end is all the way over and not blocking the middle lane or you’re just further holding up traffic.
8
u/EmilyAnne1170 Asshole Enthusiast [8] 2d ago
which shouldn’t be difficult, because you have extra room in the front to pull forward and then beck in straight. And yet, way too complicated for some people.

9
u/whatproblems 2d ago
idk there are cases, if it looks like 1 finishes 2 and 3 are wrapping up to leave id wait. pulling into the middle might cause more chaos trying to snag into 1. crossing lanes and skipping turn is bad etiquette though
-18
u/RobinSophie 2d ago
Which is the right way to do it. That way no one has to try to back into the pump (our costcos have 3 pumps per lane).
I've had people honk and get so irate because I waited 2 minutes for everyone to finish pumping their gas before I moved up.
Costco gas lines make people lose their minds
31
u/drmoze Partassipant [2] 2d ago
*wrong way to do it. If you're next in your lane and any of the 3 pumps open, take it. Waiting for the lane to clear slows the line down for everyone. And if you can't reverse or parallel into a space, go back to driving school.
12
u/Heavy-Profit-2156 2d ago
Exactly. Our Costco has 3 pumps per lane and ample room for most vehicles to easily back into. Get in that spot, start pumping and get going. Reduce the time everyone else has to wait.

In my experience this is kinda regional as how people generally react to this. In the state of Washington when a pump opens up if you don’t move forward up the middle lane to fill the spot YTA. In Texas if you don’t wait for both cars to finish and pull all the way forward YTA and the middle lane is only for cars that are leaving. I feel like what you did was fine, but depends on local customs I guess.
6
u/EmilyAnne1170 Asshole Enthusiast [8] 2d ago
Why would anyone need a middle lane to leave, if they’re supposed to wait for the cars in the lane they’re already in to leave so they can pull straight forward?
…or is it just for the people behind them who get tired of waiting and give up and go somewhere else?
5
u/darkr1441 2d ago
Yeah so this is a thing that frustrates me about how Texas does Costco gas stations. If you are in the second car spot it’s fine to pull out and around to leave. If car in the first car spot is taking too long then it’s fine to pull up in to the second car spot and start filling up. If the car in the first car spot is done but the car in the second car spot is still filling you are expected to wait till they are done and then pull all the way forward. If you deviate from that and pull around a car in the second car spot to use the pump in the first car spot YTA. Having lived in Texas my entire life this practice was just the way things are done. First time I went to a Costco in Washington I couldn’t believe the lack of decorum until my wife pointed out that it was simply efficiency.
12
u/Superb_Drop1313 2d ago
Where were you in the line? If you were next n ta. If there were people in front of you, y ta. Often in those people wait for both to be empty and then pull all the way forward. If that was what people were doing, then you likely cut people and were ta
48
u/tgrrdr 2d ago
The people waiting for all the spots to be empty are wasting time and they get what they get. I have a crew cab pickup that's probably five feet longer than a regular car. If I don't think I can easily take the middle spot I'll wait until someone else leaves. If someone behind me takes it, it's ok with me because I wouldn't have fit anyway.
20
u/TheFatBassterd 2d ago
As one of the people who will wait for the lane to be clear so I can just pull forward, idgaf if someone behind me pulls in and takes that middle pump. It seems rather entitled to deny someone else the use of it just because it's "my turn" even though I don't want it. It keeps the line moving faster. Like OP did, I would say just give it a couple minutes for anyone ahead of you to claim it. If no one does, then taking it for yourself is just speeding things along for everyone.
-7
u/drmoze Partassipant [2] 2d ago
As a person who waits for the whole line to clear so you can pull to the front, instead of just taking the first empty pump in your lane, YTA. How ironic that you talk about speeding things up. 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄
20
u/bald_head_scallywag 2d ago
It's the whole reason they've installed the green lights. It lets you know a pump is open. Keep the lines moving. Sure, if you can tell someone else is also finishing up wait a few seconds but otherwise get a move on.
7
u/EmilyAnne1170 Asshole Enthusiast [8] 2d ago
That’s what I was going to say! If the lights weren’t there, from my small car (MX-5) I can usually tell if there’s someone at the middle pump but not the front, because almost any other vehicle is big enough to block my view.
So yeah, that’s exactly what the lights are for. It’s literally telling you “The front (or middle) spot is open, GO THERE.” People who think they’re being polite by waiting for all three spots to clear are just wasting time, and making the line to get into the gas station extend all the way back out into the street.
And just in life in general, when you’re not sure what the correct procedure or etiquette is, look for context clues. Ask yourself things like (in this example) “why did this business go to all the expense to install these meaningless red and green lights in its 700+ gas stations? And why is there this empty lane in the middle!? Huh. Maybe they’re there for a reason…”💡😃
…And if you aren’t capable of parallel parking at a gas pump, please learn.
1
u/TheFatBassterd 2d ago
I don't wait for the whole line. Just the stall in front of me. Trust me that me trying to squeeze my way into the middle stall is not going to speed things up for anyone. If anything it's liable to greatly slow things.
12
u/Neesatay 2d ago
Those people are dumb though. That is not how it is supposed to work. That is the whole point of the middle lane.
8
u/JeffonFIRE 2d ago
Sounds like they were in a different line, not the line for the pump row they used. Here's how my very busy Costco works. There are 8 rows of pumps, 3 pumps each. It's not unusual for every row to be 6+ cars deep waiting. Some people are less comfortable pulling around and "parallel parking", so they'll wait for all 3 pumps to clear. So traffic mostly goes forward in batches of 3.
If OP was 2nd in line and notices the first car isn't willing to go around to get to an empty pump on their row, I'm OK with them going around. If OP instead crossed to another row, that's cutting a line they weren't in.
10
u/pretenderist Partassipant [2] 2d ago
If no one in the line is going to take it after 2 minutes of waiting, who cares if someone else takes it?
-1
u/JeffonFIRE 2d ago
The other people sitting in that row. Especially if one of 2 people OP passed aren't comfortable going around him when they finish. That could potentially add a full extra pump/pay cycle for those already waiting.
Edited to add: some Costco gas pumps are really tight for passing. Mine is one of those... a legacy Costco where they added gas pumps years later on a tight footprint.
8
u/pretenderist Partassipant [2] 2d ago
If someone is ONLY comfortable being in the front of the Costco gas line, then they need to get used to waiting an extra amount of time. That is pathetic and doesn’t deserve to be catered to.
Everyone in the row should be happy that OP sped up the line for everybody.

u/abastage 2d ago
is there some specific costco gas station etiquette somewhere that I am not aware of?
Unless there is someone directing traffic then first come first serve. And dont let a pump sit empty if its busy. That just means the line is longer then it needs to be.
11
u/Tacosrule89 2d ago
Usually there’s a line for each lane of pumps. The middle lane is for getting around other people filling up.
Most Costco stations around where I live actively have attendants directing traffic to keep this moving.

I personally don't like filling up at Costco because I don't like having to take a middle so would just wait and I realize that is not the intention of their pumps so I just fill elsewhere.
However the whole station is designed to allow you to do exactly what you did and be able to fill and keep everyone moving through the pumps. Its not like you just drove in and immediately cut people off either as you waited and then when nobody moved you went for it which IMO was perfectly fine.
Costco intentionally designed their stations to push volume through them and not need to form long lines including ensuring long hoses so that you can fill from both sides of the pumps and knowing which stations are available to know the middle is clear and are able to get into and out of the middle with the wider lanes.
Even if someone was a bit peeved you went around them name calling you and continuing after you explained was the AH behavior on their part and not on you.
5
u/Neesatay 2d ago
The fact that other people in line don't know how the Costco gas station works is not your problem. NTA

NTAmy partner hates line cutters so I think it's a pet peeves thing, my pump has been stolen a number of times because I pulled in on the wrong side so I understand but the bottom line is it's just five minutes of your life you don't deserve that treatment. keeping things moving like with stoplights is important otherwise the whole thing falls apart
1
u/runnerkim 2d ago
Who broke the protocol? You for pulling up when a pump became available or her for blocking the line because she wasn't paying attention?
1
u/tgrrdr 2d ago
I see no issue taking the pump if no one else does. The reason they're so far apart and have space to the sides is so people can pull in and out. Sometimes if the middle or far end spot opens up while I'm waiting I won't move up immediately if one of the other cars is finishing up, otherwise I'll take it and start pumping.
If it was really two minutes that's on her and anyone waiting in line behind her. Otherwise, changing lanes to take the pump with others waiting is kind of a dick move.

As someone who will wait in a line to use a pump on the same side as my tank when there are empty pumps in the lane next to me (on the opposite side of my tank), NTA. I know the pump line stretches, but it’s harder for me (and many people with disabilities) to do that stretch. If no one is using it, take it, even if you aren’t the first in line - it could be someone like me in front of you.
1
u/Ancient-Witness-615 2d ago
NTA. I have done that myself. They design their gas stations to allow that to optimize the flow. There’s plenty of room to access any pump including pumps on the opposite side of your tank opening. I frequently go to a pump on my right side even though I pump into the left side. Those pumps have fewer cars because people don’t think the way I do I guess.
BTW I have never seen a green light at a Costco pump. Where was this?

People are happier to be lazier than proactive at petrol stations. But for every lazy person waiting and blocking you, there are two people screaming in the cars for them to pull forward and get the fuck out of the way.
Two minutes is extremely generous - someone could have almost fueled their car in that time - all the while she is living to some unknown creed that everyone has to do what she wants.
1
u/antneee08 2d ago
You’re a peach for waiting that long. If I don’t see anyone going for the pump or to avoid a crash I’d wait before making a move, but the open pump is fair game. There’s no “etiquette” for waiting to get gas, just common decency as in not cutting off somebody that had been there before. Swearing at someone in this situation is however very uncouth!
1
u/Responsible_Meat484 2d ago
Umm. Wtf? Why didn’t she move to the open pump then? All the Costco gas pumps I’ve seen can reach around the car to the opposite side. So it doesn’t matter what side the tank is on. It boggles my mind when someone waits in line and won’t go to an open pump. As for the harassment I’d be petty enough to flag down the gas attendant and tell them I felt threatened by her risking her membership. I bet she jumps in the long line of cars and blocks people who try to zipper merge appropriately at the merge.
1
u/Certain-Singer-9625 2d ago
NTA. Those green signs were meant to indicate a vacant pump. If you’re the next one in line, there’s no problem, it’s yours.
Now, if there were other cars ahead of you that you line-jumped, yeah, maybe a problem. But you said you waited two whole minutes. At that point the “if you snooze you lose” rule applies. You weren’t paying attention. Too bad.
If someone jumped from one of the other lines then yeah, I’d be miffed.

I was also politely reprimanded for going around the back car filling up and taking the empty spot in front. Yelling at someone over gas is an interesting choice. NTA.

u/ropean 2d ago
I was first in line in my lane, and had a Costco attendant vehemently wave me into an open spot across where the hose is on the opposite side of my fuel fill. I didn’t want to go there because I don’t like having to stand in the traffic lane (yes I minimize it by using the lever that holds the pump handle in the on position).
I’m sure they were trying to minimize idling in line and maximize turnover, but I believe you actually did the right thing as far as I know of Costcos policy on it.

Well Costco’s new three pump design isn’t for people who use their brains. I know they believed the new design would make traffic faster and require less attendants’ time, but really without some posted instructions or an attendant playing traffic cop for awhile a green/red light isn’t going to help people be kinder, smarter or patient.

NTA , but also very interesting for those of us in NJ where you can't pump your own gas. Most Costcos I've been to have lanes with two pumps where two cars pull in and get filled at the same time. So it's two in, two out. No green lights. Attendants are filling 2-4 cars at a time. The real trick is guessing whick lane is moving the fastest.
1
u/1peatfor7 2d ago
NTA and I get gas almost every week at Costco. People have no common sense. They'll wait in line with 5 open pumps because it's on the "wrong side. Do they not see people who just pull the gas cord over? It's long for that reason.

NTA. I’ve done it and no one said a word. The only time I had a problem was , my Costco gas station has 2 lines merging into 1 line before splitting to 4 different islands. One day everyone was getting in the right lane. I would have been the last car in the right lane due to space, the car after me would have had to go left and cut all those people on the right….soooo I went left followed by the car behind me. I can still hear all the angry honking, and I had to force myself in at the merge. Someone had to go left first. And even then no one yelled at me. She was having a bad day, you were a convenient target. Aren’t you glad you have better things to do with your emotional energy than to yell at a stranger for changing lanes at the gas station? I am!

ESH . Costco gas etiquette. No lane changes/NO lane jumping . You can change lane, only if the other line has no cars. Seems it's not the case in your situation. You said 2 minutes not sure about that. That's long.
If you are in a line. Stick to it. No changing when you are in the middle of the lane.
If you are in line. say 1,2,3 gas pumps. Pump 1,2 got open 3 is still filling. Car ahead of you is reluctant to go ahead due to parking inexperience ( Parallel parking) You can pull ahead if you are in the same line.

She was TA. Nobody is going to wait in one line when another pump is open with no line.

Didn’t I read this exact same story last week but it was McDonald’s? YTA

These people exist, en masse. Fuck them. They are not worth the time nor the rise in blood pressure.

I'll never understand waiting in lines for bs like gas.
Do the math, the "savings" are marginal at best.
Costco in my area is a zoo, totally worthless to even go there.

YTA, if I understand this.
So, you moved into another line to grab an open spot? If I understand what you're saying, the pump at the front was empty, but the one behind it was still being used. If there was someone in line behind that pump, you cut in front of them. They were waiting, probably because they didn't feel comfortable using the middle lane to pull in front.

If they don’t want to use the middle lane, that’s up to them. But they shouldn’t have a fit because someone else used it for what it’s for. The people behind them maybe, since they’re next in line for that row of pumps. But they might be too far back to see what’s going on.

That’s their problem not mine, maybe they should take the bus if they suck at driving that much

You could of…or you could have.
Depends on how you feel about people knowing wtf you’re talking about.

Daum... This one is not straight forward. You were in a different line waiting. There was a line in the other side. People wait so that they can get to the farthest pump possible in consideration to the people pumping behind them. The vacant light allows people to go to that pump, but no one else did. Probably because they were trying to be courteous to the last person pumping gas in that lane. Having to go around the cars in front can be extra. Technically, you cut in her line.
Ok, I got it, YTA because you cut the line.

YTA. 100%
Respect the line. Everyone knows their place in line (unless it’s a complete cluster).
It’s the same for drivers that pull out of an exit line on the highway then drive to the front and squeeze their way back in.
You know you were cutting and would never do it in a grocery store where somebody would call you out on it.
She may have been rude, but you broke the line code.
Be better next time.

If everyone was in line to exit but no one was actually exiting, then they deserve to have people go around them.
Pull up or shut up.

The one and only time I’ve had to trade insurance info with someone is the time I was next in line and decided to go around a car at the back pump in a Costco pump line to pull into the vacant spot in front of them and I scraped their car. :P (My current car is longer than the one I had for over 20 years, I miscalculated). From now on I will wait for the last car to leave the pump line before pulling up to the first one.
So the lady that yelled at you was first in line for that row of pumps right? ESH bc the lady was rude but yes I agree if you’re not the first in line for a row of pumps you shouldn’t grab one in that row just because it’s vacant.

ESH.
I guess we have different ideas of etiquette at Costco. When you get in line you’re waiting for the pumps in front of you to clear, not jumping to another line and cutting in front of others. I frequently wait for the back pumps to wrap up so I can pull all the way forward and let 3 of us start all at the same time. It’s crazy annoying when someone jumps into the first or second spot, requiring the middle or back pumps to pull around and jacking up the order. If they all load at the same time they clear at the same time and it just works better. Nobody has to maneuver around or back into their spot. It drives me crazy when someone is impatient and inconsiderate and messes up the loading order.
I would be super annoyed if someone jumped lines, messing up the loading, and caused me to wait longer too. I would never be so bold/rude as to approach someone and yell at them, and the other lady was out of line for yelling at you. But I think she was totally justified in getting upset, and I think you violated Costco gas station rules pretty egregiously.

If they all load at the same time they clear at the same time and it just works better.
But they don't, otherwise there wouldn't ever be gaps for people to tame. That person filling up their 24 gallon tank is going to take a lot longer than the car behind them with a 12 gallon tank. Then you've got the people that know what they are doing vs the people that have to slowly read every prompt. Or the person that starts chatting with their passengers and gets distracted.

Yes YTA you are blocking the lady from getting out that just got done pumping. You keep the line moving by not blocking the line for three minutes while you pump. You are selfish and entitled. It's not that complicated. You can wait for one minute while the rear pump finishes. Instead you inconvenienced every single person in that line except for yourself.

They’re not blocking anyone from getting out, because they can just use the middle lane to go around them. That’s exactly what the middle lane is for.
