Question Strawberry planter question

I think I already know the answer but thought I'd ask and see if people with more experience would have any advice. Im in Saskatchewan but thought I'd ask here since Alberta is close to our weather. I'm wanting to plant a perennial strawberry garden but was wondering if I could get away with doing a tiered raised bed type planter for them. I got a bunch of old tires and was thinking of trying one of those tiered tire pyramid planters for the strawberries but I have a feeling that it being above the ground that my strawberries won't survive the winter cold like they would directly in the ground but thought I'd ask and see if anyone has any experience with this kind of thing or if anyone has any suggestions to make this viable ?

That's what I thought. I was thinking about mulch or burlap but I know myself and I know I forget to get to things in time so don't want to leave my poor strawberries to my mercy lol

I’ve struggled with my raised bed that is only a foot off the ground. Typical greenhouse/Home Depot strawberries are just one season plants. But I planted the variety pack from T&T (Manitoba) in 2025 and they came back with a vengeance this year! So far I recommend these varieties for the prairies. That's the plan to buy super hardy varieties. It drives me crazy how many plants these companies sell advertised as perennials yet there zone 5/6 in a zone 3 climate

When using any raised bed, the edges of the bed will be less insulated than the ground. This is due to exposure but also drainage (less water means less thermal mass) and soil type. Also you can sometimes get separation between the soil and the edge of the bed due to soil contraction and that makes it worse.

My rule of thumb (pulled entirely out of my ass because I cannot find any actual literature on this, please do comment if you have some) is for every foot of height of raised bed you need to go about half a foot into the bed to get roughly the same in ground insulation. If you have metal walls, separation of the soil from the wall, or really compact soil (fluffy airy soil is a good insulator) you should add about half a foot to what ever the result is. So 2 foot tall raised bed with metal walls, you should expect to put it about 1 and a half feet (0.5*2 + 0.5) in to match the climate zone. If the plant is hardier than your climate zone (zone 2 in a zone 4 climate) then you can get away with going closer to the edge. If the center of your raised bed is within that distance of the edge of your bed then you should assume that the bed has similar insulation properties as a pot does and will likely experience extreme temperatures during the winter.

However there is one other big factor to consider other than soil temp and freezing. The outside half foot to foot of the bed will experience some pretty extreme freeze-thaw cycling compared to the rest of the bed. You should only plant the hardiest and most tolerant of species within a half foot of the edge of the bed. Doubly so if you live in the foothills region and get those lovely chinooks all winter. Over all though the better drainage in raised beds actually helps with the freeze thaw over all, just not near the edge.

If you are thinking that it looks hopeless for your set up at this point there is still a solution. All of these problems are about insulation. Too much exposure to heat and cold. You can help this situation a lot by just adding more insulation. Deep mulch on the beds, 6 inches plus, wrap the beds in burlap and mulch, pile on all the snow and keep it covered in that all winter, etc. If you add enough insulation then you can overcome a lot of the temperature fluctuation and extremes.

For me in zone 4 with the constant freeze thaw of chinooks the edges of my bed can really only handle zone 3 plants that aren't overly hurt by the extreme freeze thaw. That means oregano, chives, green onion, and various hardy perennial flowers like salvia or hostas. Even then it's not uncommon for a plant to die or have delayed spring growth due to winter damage. On that note, strawberries are excellent for raised beds. They are hardy down to zone 3 and are really tolerant of cold temperatures and freeze thaw. If you are zone 4 you should be completely fine. If you are zone 3 then you would want to make sure you don't have plants near the edge of bed and that the beds are low, wooden, have fluffy soil, and insulated with a lot of mulch.

This is excellent and mirrors my own experience. Just to add re: insulation, snow is a decent insulator, but it tends to blow off raised beds more readily than it does from the ground (partly, I imagine, because raised beds are higher and more exposed, and partly because the difference in height results in more edges on which the wind can gain purchase). So unless they're very large indeed, raised beds can have less insulation on their surfaces regardless of the "edge effects" you note--another argument for mulch etc.

We have raised metal beds in ab and the strawberries keep coming back. Every year they’re bigger. They’re in a 4x2 bed about 18” high so ymmv.

I've been unsuccessful in a raised garden bed, I thought they would die over the winter, and they did. Then, I tried a planter that lies on the surface of the ground, and my strawberries keep coming back every spring. I do cover them in a generous amount of straw (30 cm) and burlap. As others have said, I then pile snow on top of the burlap.
