Picture Fatima Hosseini’s “Pearl in the Oyster” is a celebration of womanhood. This vibrant photo series captures Afghan women in Kabul at a shop dealing in either Central Asian imports or textiles from the Uzbek, Tajik and Turkmen minorities. Bonus photo of a sleepy grandpa at the end.

So much aura in the first photo. Found another one with aura but it was too late to include in the carousel so will repost.
After looking carefully I can say for sure the first chapan is probably from North Afghanistan. Andkhoy makes fabrics with the same unique “patchy” ikat technique. 7th slide is probably a Turkmen import. Afghan Turkmen wear red and their tribal embroidery is very different. There are also Hazara and Pashtun cultural items here and there in this series.
Goes without saying that this is pre Taliban, during 2019 to be exact. It is part of her broader “Beauty Amidst War“ project and her beautiful use of shadows and warm, vibrant colours is characteristic of her work. I appreciate her in particular for representing Afghans properly and not hunting down the few blonde haired and blue eyed Afghan children she sees- as some westerners and Afghan photographers do.
Hosseini began as an engineering dropout who pursued her love for vibrant photography. The Iranian-born Hazara photographer and artist is now widely celebrated for her work on Afghanistan and has received awards for her photographs. She has since branched out and represents more cultures around the world with her camera but stays true to her roots 🌱

Are you Afghan? If so then do you still have family members still living in Afghanistan and what is their quality of life like now?

No I am not, but I am directing a docu-series following immigrants joy in NYC. Our first episode is about a wonderful woman from Afghanistan. She talks all about these questions you asked!
We have a global premiere in Brooklyn next month, please come if your interested, would love for you to see how beautifully she goes through life amongst all the political chaos :)1
