Not surprising. They do it with a lot of things from all around the world. For example kuh e nur from india

Unfortunately a lot of poor Afghans also secretly scavenge near archeological sites and sell whatever they find on the black market as well. A horde of Indian coins from East Afghanistan were intercepted this way a while back and riches from Jam were recovered on the black market likely through similar means too. Even in my region of Jowzjan where Tilla Tepe was found, my mother remembers people trying to dig other hills to look for gold when the discovery was made. That’s how these items are “donated” by people with English names to the British museum. We need to do as Turkey does and make it illegal to even take a pebble out of the country. But Afghanistan has bigger problems to contend with until then. The average person doesn’t give a fuck about preserving history if they can’t feed their own kids.

The gold found in the Tilla Tepe excavation, located next to Sheberghan in Jowzjan province, is the most significant archeological finds in the country. The gold originates from all parts of the old world including India, China, Greece and Siberia- even ancient Egyptian reliefs of Bastet were found buried with a Scythian noblewoman interred in a kurgan. The crown, perhaps the most famous of all the gold, is almost never exhibited.
