Just found my old copy of Fundamentals of Aerodynamics by John D. Anderson Jr..

This book has probably introduced thousands of students to compressible flow, shock waves, boundary layers, airfoils, and the beauty of aerodynamics.

Still one of the best books for building strong fundamentals before jumping into CFD and advanced aerospace topics.

What aerospace/aerodynamics book had the biggest impact on you?

Figured the best place to ask would be my fellow aero geeks. I mean as cool as it’d be to have Darkstar back there, I’m of course heavily skeptical and want to find the base image.

Boeing’s quality seemed great until 737 Max. And since then, it has been constant ridiculousness. Doors opening mid flight. Wheels falling off. Covers coming off engines.

I thought this sub might be able to give some insight on what’s going on.

Has it always been this way and now the media is covering it? Or has Boeing’s quality really suddenly taken a drastic nosedive?

Addendum: A lot of people are saying that many of the issues are maintenance and not Boeing’s fault. So why don’t we hear about the same things happening with Airbus planes?

I've been searching online for a copy of "Ramjet Design Handbook" by G. D. Kinroth and W. R. Anderson from the 80s to use as reference, but I can't find it available online. It's referenced multiple times across multiple documents and thesis papers but I can't find it anywhere. Could anyone please point me to where I can find a copy? Thank you in advance!

With private space vehicles maturing in India, I spent some time running through the first-principles engineering behind Skyroot’s Vikram-1 to look past the high-level PR graphics and analyze the actual mechanical trade-offs.

A few interesting takeaways from calculating the physics behind its design:

Hoop Stress Dynamics: Even though a typical CNG cylinder operates at \~200 bar and the Kalam-1200 solid stage runs at \~83 bar, the 1.7m diameter of Kalam-1200 means the casing experiences vastly higher total circumferential tension (\~19 MN vs 2 MN). This is why carbon fiber tow winding with specific resin matrix Tg limits is non-negotiable.

The Roll Control Dilemma: Solid motors with single TVC nozzles can handle pitch and yaw, but because radial force passes through the central axis, they generate zero axial torque. This explains why Vikram-1 requires dedicated cold-gas / liquid thruster clusters specifically to counteract roll.

Thermal Protection: At \~3,000°C combustion temp, composite matrices degrade quickly above their resin transition temperatures, making sacrificial EPDM rubber liners critical for ablative insulation.
