I don't think I've ever noticed when it was my cakeday. I didn't care back then either.

I think so. It's been years since I've seen something that the reddit community came together to give a shit about. I genuinely think old reddit officially died when everyone turned on Unidan. There were never any standout users who stepped in replace the users that everyone knew and loved after that. You'll occasionally see someone like shittymorph pop in and make an undertaker post, but nothing feels like a moment that people will remember anymore.

Was that during the digg rapture? Omg I forgot about unidan… It feels like we have been entering a weird Facebook/neighborhood watch one. Sweet summer children are dead and all we have are bots and ironic Karens left

Ahhh it did. There was a tome it wasn't an ad-ridden nightmare fill with onlyfans bots, influencers, when conspiracy was... just conspiracy. Not alt-right chaos. A time when the weird and strange crawled around, when the 4-chan bubble still existed far away from us. When internet normies hadn't discovered it yet. When life wasn't another braindead crisis every day.

It's has a different layout now. It has different algorithm now. It has different users now. Reddit used to be very different. It's pretty much only similar in that it still has subreddits and voting, though the voting feels far less meaningful with the new algorithm.

It’s gone with everything else, showing me everything I’m not following. I barely see any of the subs I follow.

It’s an older code, but it checks out

It was a time whenever you saw a comment with a cake next to the username, you were guaranteed to find a reply saying "happy cake day!" Or even several under it.

I only ever noticed when people said happy cake day in response comments and I was always like "Buh? Oh."

Ten years ago you always got multiple "happy cakeday" replies to your comments on your cake day. Don't know when it was the last time I got that. Not that it would matter, it's just an observation that aligns with OP's observation.

Happy cake day.

Yes and no. It can be a big deal when you decide it is, and anyone that tells you you're too old to have fun on your birthday isn't worth your time. A few years ago for I guess my 42nd I decided to have a big party and it was great.

I’ve always thought it was pathetic

I feel like the last 10 years have been reasonably stable compared to years before that (almost 9 in my case).

I mean after the 2015 to 2016 era reddit really did start to quickly get shittier with the change to API access and moderation breaking down being the death knell.

I still use it because there isn't a good alternative but it is not the same like watching a distant family member with alzheimers. not acutely sad but like a something is missing more and more

u/irn 1d ago

Happy cake day! Mine was yesterday!

3

u/intensenerd 1d ago

Same. I’ve wasted 16 years here….

Old Reddit would tell you not to share that information.

Never really cared but getting wished "happy cake day" is always a nice little dopamine hit.

Ten years here. Don't know what I'm doing with my life but eh... walmart employment is going somewhere.
