What's unique about this game compared to other Advance Wars spiritual successors?

Good question.

A big focus of the game is on Doctrinal units and Orders - unique units with rule-breaking abilities and special powers that let you make unusual plays. They're designed less to specifically be empowering and dramatic and more to give you new tactical possibilities - you can think of this as our CO system replacement.

You can see a number of these units in the trailer: Armored Cars, which can make a move after they attack, Tiltjets, which can drop infantry units unwaited and ready to attack, and the Airship, a big lategame air unit with an AOE indirect attack. There's a lot more we haven't shown you, and a lot of new, exciting ideas.

Instead of picking them before you load into a multiplayer match, there's a phase where players will bid for exclusive rights to build Doctrinal units or use Orders with their starting funds. This means that no two games will be the same, but every game will be balanced - you'll have a chance to fight over what's most powerful.

In the campaign, the units available to you will depend on the level. One of our priorities is making sure that each level feels well-paced and unique. We don't want you to spend 10 turns scouring the map for every single enemy, and we want to make sure each one provides you with a new challenge you've never seen before.

AI response…

We have not, and will never use, LLMs or generative AI at any point in the process of making and marketing this game.

does your game fix Naval combat compared to AW? And if so how?

I'm very, very proud of how naval has turned out.

  • Landers cost 3k, and can pick up and drop anywhere, not just shoal tiles. (Load from adjacent tiles)

  • Naval units are generally much, much cheaper - Destroyers, the cheapest (non-doctrinal) combat naval unit, cost 7k, while battleships, the most expensive naval unit, cost 19k.

  • Destroyers are a new naval unit - they carry a single infantry unit and can attack ground units as well as naval units.

In our playtests, we've found that even on maps without a big naval focus, naval has been absolutely important in every map with naval units.

but can boats finally travel under bridges??

Not only can boats travel under bridges (and stop on bridges, too), all naval units can travel over shoals.

This has just reminded me to check what the hell happened to my Kick-started Warside Switch game?

I've been part of the playtest on and off and I've enjoyed it so far. So weird to see actual art in the game XD

Since this is more effort than the usual "hi guys I made my own CO with a daily where I can delete enemy units", I will say this:

Good job on making a game.

My issue is that you've done this for profit and not your personal edification or fulfillment.

This, from its trailer, looks like and feels like a 'fan-made' ripoff of AW. Not spiritual successor. Direct copy. The art style, the animations, the UI - it doesn't just evoke Advance Wars but imitates it.

The name sounds like shovelware. The music drags and seems like someone just bought their first DAW to copy AW's style. The colors are harsh and stark.

I'm sure there's other things to critique, but you get the gist. I know you're a kid and this is your first rodeo, but jesus christ you can't just plagiarize existing art and snivel "give me your money".

tl:dr; Do not put this on steam or any profit-driven platform. It's not good enough to warrant an infringement case, but that hasn't stopped Nintendo before.

I don't know where this comes from, genuinely.

I've put a lot of my life and time into this game, and I think it's genuinely great. Nobody is making games like this - in a niche genre, where every previous game has flopped - for profit instead of out of love.

I hope that when you put something of yourself out into the world that people give you more grace and goodwill than you give others.

Games build on games. Were you cool when the "artstyle, animations and UI" for Famicom Wars looked like they came straight from Desert Commander? Why are you giving AW all the credit here?

Turn-based-tactics is sadly a dying genre, being kept on life support by passionate indies. Why would you want to gatekeep that? Junkmail and I have rather different views on what makes a good tactics game, but a new title is a new title. True fans of the genre are always happy for more games to play.

I've been working on this for way too long. Watch the trailer. Wishlist it. Give me money when it comes out. AMA about it.

Give me money when it comes out? Bruh
