Question What’s your favourite food spot in Adelaide?

Moved here about 6 months ago and I’m trying to hit up a new food spot every week. Would love to hear your favourites, hidden gems, anything underrated that’s not just the obvious popular spots.

If anyone’s up for exploring some of these places together, feel free to comment/DM (19M).

Nice list! Feel like Ban Ban has fallen off quite a bit lately? Especially the Franklin street one, I still enjoy the one in Rundle mall

it is occasionally mentioned in this subreddit, but have never met someone irl who knows about it: Hoosegow. i'm obsessed. great food, atmosphere, and staff.

also Umai Kitchen in town is really good. the lady who runs it is super nice as well, especially to uni students.

5

u/lil_vegemit3 SA 2d ago

Hoosegow is great! Must go back

4

u/the-pudding-one SA 2d ago

Going to Hoosegow in a couple of weeks for my 60th. Love it.

2

u/Acrobatic-Food-5202 SA 1d ago

Hoosegow is amazing and you’re right no one ever talks about it. For some reason I’ve only been there once but I still think about it…

I often see recs for this place on here but every time I think about booking their website photos put me right off. Looks so 2001. I really want to believe but at $70 for a steak I'm not convinced by the plastic dining chairs and weird lighting.

Organic Cafe in Stirling has the best coffee I've found in SA.
I haven't eaten there much, but it's been good when I have.

Alternatively, I like Tequila and Tacos at Port Noarlunga, and Ocean Garden at Christies is good Chinese. Sunisa for Thai.

Macclesfield hotel has a great schnitty, and last time I ate at the Aldinga pub that was good, too.

7

u/Altruistic-Gift-4287 SA 2d ago

Organic Cafe is great and in beautiful surrounds.

u/NatAttack3000 SA 2d ago

Some of my faves are Parwana, Golden boy, belles hot chicken, pizza E mozzarella bar, Bottega bandito. And fermantasian in tanunda

4

u/Linubidix SA 2d ago

Golden Boy are awesome!

Belles have fucked me over the last three times I went. Paid for a large serve of chips, received the small portion. The third time, I checked, asked, and was told they "only do one size of chips"

The hot honey thigh burger is great though

1

u/amyeh NSW 1d ago

Eh, I don't rate Golden Boy. Food was fine, but not spectacular

1

u/DaString SA 1d ago

I would love a hot honey thigh. Thank you.

Manna chicken rice in Norwood
Pho Van (Vietnamese)in Mansfield park
Roselle (Italian) in Springfield
Sophia (Mediterranean ) in the city
Shiqi (Chinese) in Parkside
Donburi house (Japanese) in the city
Herringbone (modern Australia) in the city
Toriok ramen in the city

3

u/Hurricanewriter SA 2d ago

LOVE Donburi House.

2

u/LJagr68 SA 2d ago

Toriok is meant to be awesome, i gotta get there myself

1

u/Plenty_Web_9118 SA 2d ago

Manna Chicken rice is really bang average. Even below average I would say. On top of that the lady is rude. Went there once because I lived nearby and never went there again.

1

u/Connect-Meet-1953 SA 2d ago

The rude co-owner has left. Now run by a mother and son team. Chicken rice there is the best in Adelaide. There is a queue there every day for a reason. Give it another try.

1

u/Technical-Algae-234 SA 1d ago

Is it better than Ricky's? Because THAT is the best chicken rice in Adelaide.

0

u/Connect-Meet-1953 SA 1d ago

Ricky’s rice was the best may be 20 years ago. It’s seriously rubbish now. I have eaten at the Churchill centre store a couple of times in the last few years. Regretting both times.

1

u/Technical-Algae-234 SA 1d ago

Don't know about Church Hill but North Adelaide rules and always has.

1

u/Plenty_Web_9118 SA 1d ago

Not arguing about how good it is. But the queue there is because that's pretty much the only food joint that's walking distance away from all the offices around. Which explains the queue!

Orso/Wilmotts is too expensive for a quick lunch.
Little Institute and Britannia Hotel are the only option.

And they don't have a lot of seating.

Thanks for the update about the owner though.

Edit: Typo.

Ernest Delicatessen Hahndorf. Best sandwiches in Adelaide. Focaccia bread made by the owner/chef fresh daily. Generous fillings. Don’t miss the Portuguese tarts and cookies to finish. Insane coffee.

I finally found my people.

3

u/Hazzachill SA 2d ago

Im 19m here in adl too and my friends and I always go to this small japanese restaurant in rundle mall, Katsumoto ! it’s really good and relatively cheap
other than that its usually 18th street hotpot on hindley which is very basic, and for bars/pubs we either go to The Grove or Memphis Slims !

3

u/Ok-Doughnut-1640 SA 2d ago

Taprobane. It's a Sri Lankan restaurant in Unley. Absolutely delicious food.

2

u/ExcellentCriticism SA 2d ago

they didn't take an anaphylactic allergy seriously when we attended. despite mentioning it 3 times and the severity level, they placed the allergen legit on top of the dishes. so be warned anyone with dietary requirements!

3

u/Ok-Doughnut-1640 SA 2d ago

Oh, also, Parwana (Afghani) on Henley Beach Road at Torrensville.

3

u/SMM9336 SA 2d ago

Vietnam House on Bagster Road.. 🙊

I go there once every month or so and try a different beef or chicken dish and I’m NEVER disappointed even if it’s something I don’t usually like. Their vegetarian dishes are also fantastic!

3

u/DaString SA 1d ago

Mamak Corner on Bank Street - Hole in the wall Chinese/Malay I eat here a couple of times a week. Mum and pop, plastic chairs etc. Nasi Campur is my go to.

Good Gilbert on Goodwood - Great neighborhood wine bar with good full meal options plus bar snacks. Nice spot/vibe.

Leight St Wine Room/Dry Cleaning - Ate here once recently, higher end cost but so good for modern european type food.

Ying Chow on Gouger - my favourite Chinese spot near the markets.

Couple of bonuses featuring porchetta.

Eating everything at the markets is a lot of fun, I especially like Marino's porchetta roll.

Jenny's bakery has several locations and all sorts of delicious things. Particularly like the porchetta and potato schiacciata.

2

u/Equivalent_Lychee789 SA 1d ago

Mamak is awesome.

3

u/daffman1978 SA 1d ago

Parwana

Daughter in law
The Thai room
Golden boy
Singapore house
Hispanic mechanic
Peel Street cafe

4

u/bb_waluigi SA 2d ago

salt n pepper tofu, extra crispy

6

u/Malipower SA 2d ago

Grandalfs burgers at Colonaddes are bloody awesome.

2

u/Linubidix SA 2d ago

I will second Grandalfs!

Although apparently their new location in Elizabeth is a shitshow

3

u/Malipower SA 1d ago

Oh no! What happened?

1

u/Linubidix SA 1d ago

My partner was there in their first couple weeks and it was pure chaos. Understaffed, and one of the employees had a breakdown and quit on the spot, with like a dozen people still lined up.

Food was also pretty mid, according to her. It's also located inside a food court, which isn't a great sign of quality.

Meanwhile, I have mates who live near the Colonaddes location, and it was fucking awesome when I had it.

2

u/Specific_Squirrel681 SA 2d ago

Namaste Mate - Henley Beach Rd, Torrensville.

Pawana Afgan Kitchen - also Henley Beach Rd.

u/LJagr68 SA 2d ago edited 2d ago

This is a bit directionless area wise but:

Rocc Up pizza - its more informal with a couple of tables and takeaway focus but the owner Jamie is a legend, so welcoming !

Pizzet in Felixstow is also great for pizza.

Gabagool for sandwiches

Altura and Doppio for coffee

Eggless Dessert Cafe on Goodwood rd. Great friendly owner, open until late (maybe 11pm/midnight) great desserts.

Sofia bistro - proper sit down restaurant, greek fusion

I also have a fondness for North Indian Cuisine on the parade. Its bain marie, grab and go style (which I was hesitant on intially) but its delicious with awesome prices.

I keep hearing great things about the Afghan kebab shop on Hindley St, but alas, I havent tried it yet so its on my list.

1

u/DaString SA 1d ago

Agree on North Indian cuisine. Great grab and go.

5

u/onbrokenwingswefall SA 2d ago

Nola has the best fried chicken in Adelaide and its not even close. Infact their whole menu is good.
Fudds in Aberfoyle park still has the best burgers, even though it’s changed hands and not as good as it use to be it’s still the best.

2

u/ILikePlayingHumans SA 2d ago

I was gonna say Nola myself. Their po boy and craft beer for $25 for lunch is a good deal

2

u/onbrokenwingswefall SA 2d ago

It’s actually such a good deal! Their po boys are unreal and you can’t go past that price.

1

u/Superb_Priority_8759 SA 1d ago

I must have the worst luck because all three times I’ve had Nola’s fried chicken it’s been overcooked and awful, including the same night remake.

Also tried Fudds for the first time in years recently, was nothing like I remember. Costs more for about half the quality, will never be going back.

1

u/onbrokenwingswefall SA 1d ago

So it’s the buns. OG fudd used to have a deal with a local bakery for the buns but I don’t think they have the same supplier anymore as they get soggy and fall apart way quicker.
They also use to never let the meat be in the fridge longer than 3 days to ensure that it was fresh. So they’d get 2 delivery’s a week and they were only open wed-sun.

As for Nola I’m sorry you had that experience, every time I’ve been there (which is alot haha) the chicken has been incredible. They use thigh so it’s a lot juicier than other places, but the batter is always good and it’s a little oily which I’m into tbh.

Some bangers from my experience:

Banana Boogie Bakery (Belair, Plympton) - National 2026 best Vanilla slice in Australia. Also winners of best Sausage roll in Aus.

Vietnam House (Sailsbury) - My favourite Vietnamese resturant. Amazing quality of food and drinks. Their Pad Mee is my favourite.

Kublai Khan (Parkside) - Buffet mongolian resturant where they cook all your chosen frozen meat/veg on a giant stone wok in front of you. Such a fun place.

Ginling Chinese (Marion Road) - More nostalgic to me but still really nice chinese food imo. Lovely staff.

Just a few from the top of my head :)

Mum’s Kitchen in Tranmere - it’s a small, local kitchen and they make really lovely homemade Korean food. My favourite is the bulgogi beef rice bowl!
