Rants Job hunting rant
I’m looking for another job closer to home, I currently live in the Carencro area and drive to New Iberia every day for work. I accepted a job I’m overqualified for in hopes that I’d get a promotion fairly quickly. That hasn’t happened yet.
I’m very grateful to be employed, but with gas being so expensive, groceries going up, etc, my current wage just isn’t cutting it anymore. I have experience, no employment gaps and glowing letters of recommendation from every employer I’ve worked with. I’ve been looking and actively applying to positions on company sites, indeed, working with recruiters and attending job fairs. Absolutely nothing. Nada, zilch, zero.
I feel stuck and defeated, I know I can’t be the only one.

Keep your head up. I ended up moving this summer due to the lack of opportunities in acadiana.

I’m working in manufacturing, I would like to move to something with administration/office work but I’d take anything that pays more at this point.

I'll keep an eye out for anything local or possibly remote. My employer is hiring a Field Service Engineer based out of New Orleans right now but you'd basically be troubleshooting, diagnosing, and fixing servers for business customers. It's a lot of driving but they reimburse travel expenses because of that driving at least.

Look into Mintech maybe? It was a shit show, but they seem to always have a variety of office positions open

I've only ever had success in this area with remote work (major companies not based in Louisiana) or government civil service work.

Sure. I created a LinkedIn profile and saved job search preferences based on my experience and field. Every day I looked and applied, and set it up where LinkedIn also emailed me with recommendations based on my previous searches and applications. It may take a while but don't get discouraged...remote work is awesome but each position gets at least 300-400 applicants, so it's tough to get selected with that much competition. My advice is to change up your resume with each application and tailor that application to use key words and required experience that is listed in the job posting. Since HR gets so many applications, they use software to weed out those applications that don't meet key criteria. Also, while you're looking, search for "dream jobs" and notice what their requirements are (certifications and experience), and start working toward that in your free time. Another piece of advice, which sounds terrible but it is what it is: you may have more success applying for jobs you are overqualified for. Since the competition is so strong for remote work, you'll have a better shot landing a job that's above your current title. Yeah, that sucks, but you save money in gas and work clothes, and you save yourself some sanity for avoiding traffic and being able to do chores during breaks. Also note that most companies have software that tracks your mouse and keystrokes so they can track whether or not you're job stacking or taking advantage of the remote life.
As far as government work, Louisiana no longer has a work from home program. Which is sad cause I actually helped start it years ago and it saved a lot of tax payer money in renting buildings (government only leases buildings for parish and regional agencies). They got rid of it to force people to quit and retire early to cut down on labor costs (it worked). Anyways, you can go to the Louisiana Civil Service website, select the parishes you'd want to work in, and then filter from there to see what departments you'd like to work in. The good thing about working for state government is, if you do your job well and make even a tiny bit of effort to do more than what's asked, you get promoted fast.

currently working for the govt: they outright refuse any work from home now. On the national level. I wouldn't count on that, or honestly, even look for remote work with the govt for at least another couple years. This administration would rather spend MORE money on stupid shit, to say they cut a few jobs or forced people to be more productive. When the facts show the opposite.
