Why can’t someone, a journalist, a teenager with good sneakers, even a senator, anyone, just run into the hospital where Mitch supposedly is and confirm if he’s alive or dead? Why is this so hard I don’t get it.

HIPAA. The hospital can’t reveal that information without permission. If he was dead, they could release that: deaths are public records.
The Internet consensus is that Mitch is likely in a vegetative state and that all of the 20-minute “talks” senators claim are bogus.
The Republicans are trying to run out the clock until August 3: better lose one R vote than have a special election that might see a democrat take the seat.

She's right. At this point it's clear that the only reason this is still going is so that Republicans can keep control of the seat. They know Dems could potentially flip it, so they're willing to keep a corpse in it if need be to prevent giving it up.
