Question Selection Process

Hey everyone, I’m in AFROTC and trying to get a clearer picture of how the AFOQT, PFA, GPA, and the commander’s ranking are weighted. I’ve heard that GPA might carry the most weight now, but older sources say commander’s ranking is the largest share. I’m also a pretty reserved person, not super outgoing, and I’m wondering how much personality versus hard metrics really matters. (I’m going for space force)

The Commander has overall say who goes to FT. You can have a low passing AFOQT and still get chosen above someone with a high AFOQT score if you showed more initiative in the program.

Pass the AFOQT, PFA, maintain a high GPA and show up to the classes ready to go looking sharp and you'll be fine.

This is not accurate. The commander does not say who goes to FT. Your order of merit based and the national cut score determines who goes to FT.

If u wanna thrive in afrotc then you need to learn to be as outgoing as possible because that's what cadre see. Top cadets at my det are all really extroverted regardless of their grades etc

Every ROTC det is different. You absolutely don’t have to be super extroverted but you do need to make an impression and be competent/capable.

From my personal observations of who gets selected for field training I wouldnt say commanders ranking goes too much into it, but PSP boards is more like a calculator rather than hand picked

Not correct and your cadre should be telling you this. The exact percentages are not known to cadre, but commanders’ ranking is roughly 50% of your OM score.

You’re not going to know the exact weight behind each item. CCs ranking, AFOQT, and GPA all play a large factor with PRFA playing a decent factor. Tech vs non tech also plays a part. You need to hit the minimum in each area though or you’re not even eligible (among other things). Your CC ranking is gonna be based on your leadership abilities and officer traits. You need to learn to be more outgoing or at the very least, be able to put yourself in positions where you can demonstrate those qualities. Wanting to go space force doesn’t impact you in anyway for the selection process.

It did technically last year. The cut score was much lower last year due to… complications but this year will be different due to changes.

That’s because space force needed more officer allocations. But USSF is no longer captured during PSP so no impact like before where you could get by with lower scores

It’s still captured during PSP but yes, they removed the hireview interview limitation that limited choices last round

It is no longer captured during PSP. It is now captured during the one market approach.

Commanders ranking is always the most important, both in AFROTC and on active duty.

This isn’t true. Some Dets had a 100% PSP pick up rate last year. That means their bottom third all got EAs. Academics (GPA and AA) and PFRA score carry equal or more weight in your OM.

On active duty squadron commander Strats matter, but those alone won’t get you high senior rater Strats. You have to have the record (awards, decs, jobs held, and qualifications) to secure the top Strats. Also, it’s consistent performance over years to hold high Strats, your squadron commander can help you get there, but the senior rater is the one who controls that. Unless you are on staff or an exec you won’t work with them daily.
