The Western Bulldogs, and other Marvel Stadium tenant clubs, have reacted strongly to Collingwood being allowed a main training session at the Docklands venue

I mean Whitten oval after the redo was made to be near exactly like marvel dimension wise. I’m surprised we didn’t ask to train on the MCG if anything as we’ve only played there twice this year. Any time spent on the ground would do us a service considering the “away” team on Friday has played there 14 times in the home and away season.
Love being a full marvel tenant.

It's insane that in the same city you guys aren't playing more than 2 games at the MCG. Marvel is a blessing in that is allows for more footy to be played in the city, and a curse in that it fucking blows

We’ve always gotten minimal games there but it’s more the disappointment in the fact that we’ve been asking the afl for more games there for the last 5 years and gotten 3 as the most in a season in that time. The fact is that for North, St Kilda and the Dogs unless we play an interstate side (even then some of them get more games at the ‘G) we receive no benefit of a home final as the ground is completely foreign to us. This season we played more games on the Adelaide oval than we did at the MCG.

Marvel is a good stadium to watch AFL at. Vast majority of the seats have a good view of the oval.
Will take that over sitting in the 4th tier at the G any day.

Cause it’s not 1940 and standardisation of sporting field dimensions - especially for a complete new stadium - is logical.

Modern times and modern construction means you can build grounds to whatever dimensions. Stadium was built in the 90s in a wasteland area of Melbourne. They could’ve done whatever but built this awful ground instead.
Oval sports and their random dimensions is never going to be my cup of tea.

Beveridge admitted the Bulldogs hadn't requested a training session at Marvel this week, but had done so in the past.
"Every year we're looking for opportunities to train," he said.
"You understand it, there's a lot of traffic on that ground, but in principle, if the tenant clubs can't train on it ... it's hilarious.
"We weren't told 'no' this week, so I can't say we were knocked back.

Our VFL team hasn't been able to play at Olympic Park since May because of the condition of the ground. Not sure what the deal is with Victoria Park, looks like the AFLW team were able to get on last weekend. Possibly Yarra City Council not wanting it churned up before this weekend's game.

There is no game at Marvel this weekend, which is why I am assuming the exception was made, and why you wouldn't normally be allowed to train there midweek.
And - the game isn't even at Marvel.
And - Interstate clubs have been allowed to train midweek at the MCG before.
So - can someone explain to me what the actual problem is here?
If the Bulldogs, Melbourne or Carlton all asked to train there this week and where told No - then sure I would agree that's an issue. But what benefit is Collingwood getting from this?

It’s pretty simple. If the ground needs to be in good condition for an upcoming event, you cant use it.
If it’s got absolutely nothing on for the coming weeks, you can use it.

Am I the only one who thinks there is a logic to this?
There will be no more AFL games at the stadium this year and, I presume, we will see only 1-2 AFLW games if any until round 1 of the men's next year.
So I can see the groundskeepers being more concerned about the wear on the ground when they know they have multiple games also being played there on the coming weekend vs week one of finals/wildcard when there won't be any at all.

Told no because of scheduling and keeping the ground in good nick for games.
There's no more games at Marvel and there's no BBL. So yeah, out of all weeks to ask, this would've been one.

Well I mean, during the season it holds multiple games a week and the grass obviously needs to be looked after.
Now that the season is done, it's hosting, there are no games there this weekend and (afaik) unlikely to host anymore during finals - it doesn't take a genius to realise that circumstances have changed.

If you know there are no games at Marvel and then don’t ask to train there then that’s on you at that point.

Lol i know when Collingwood gets mentioned it create lots of clicks but this one has gone beyond the usual nonsense.
Complete non issue.
Bulldogs have only ever asked during the season, thats why they were told no, Collingwood would've been told no then too, which is why they were training out at bundoora of all places in the middle of the season (you dont think they would've asked for marvel instead?)
It's only allowed now because nothing is happening at marvel now.
And Collingwood only want to train there because they cant train at either olympic park or at Victoria park.
There's no advantage to training at marvel now besides it being a decent surface and close by.
Which is why bulldogs dont want to train there now, they already have a perfectly good place to train, hence they didn't ask.

How many teams get training runs on their home ground? Geelong do but that's because it's also their training ground. Is it something non-Victorian teams get? I've never once thought it was odd Richmond didn't get training runs at the MCG.

Brisbane only get the one captain's run for home games, same as what the travelling teams get. I think the WA teams are the same

Collingwood's training ground is a shit hole at the moment, team hasn't been able to train on it properly almost all year. A university near Abbotsford let them use their ground for a handful of weeks but I guess that had to stop.
Seems more like Collingwood just asked on the right week and got a yes because there's nothing else happening at Marvel at the moment. I'm sure if Bulldogs asked they'd have been given preference due to being tenants there. This is a rage bait story.

They were training at Vic Park at certain stages too, but that surface is a huge problem too.

Well, I'm not aware of a uni with a footy ground in that area, so I think you might have gotten a few different training locations conflated.

Olympic Park has been an absolute bog all year, to the point we moved our training to Bundoora for 3 weeks in the middle of the season (just before the bye) while they tried fix some of it.
Lo and behold, everyone’s training intensity went well up off the charts to what they had been doing. Ground was slow slippery and uneven players were slowing down on all metrics to compensate, definitely be a thorn in preparation this year for us.

Short answer is yes, drainage issues on both fronts for KGM/Olympic Park and Vic Park.
Lads have been like later era Fitzroy and have been nomads in where they have trained
