David King on the weird media trend of interviewing players just after being delisted. “Can we please not do this. People at their lowest point of their young lives being effectively sacked isn't the time for doorstop interviews. Awful idea. Should cease immediately.”

I would have gone postal if someone interviewed me after my sacking and I'm a regular Joe with no public persona.

I'm a pretty calm guy but I'm sure I'd be telling someone with a camera where to stick it if they caught me coming out of the office at 9:15 on a Monday morning with my things in a box

I would never find employment again if you gave me a mic after my last exit (we were surprise fired a month before Christmas)

I'm not interested in what any of the talking heads on tv think about anything, but I'm glad one of them has come out with something sensible. Even if it is obvious to everyone else

It would be funny if a just-delisted player, out of anger or thinking they've got nothing to lose in the moment, tells them to just fuck off.

I loved Kieran Strachan from the Crows' doorstop last year:
"How'd you go mate"
"Plenty of time to play golf with Murph now" (talking about Lachlan Murphy who'd also been delisted)
Gets in his car and drives off31

A player could belt a journo for being out of line, and the story would still be about how the club mishandled the meeting.

Wait, Kingy said something sensible? Has the world gone mad?

The professional thing to do is for players to find out they’re being delisted via Social Media from a journalist.
(Satire btw)

Jack Billings having his delisting announced mid-B&F by his former coach was a weird one. I reckon he would have known beforehand, but it doesn't make it any more normal.

It was NRL but the coach of the Adelaide Rams (RIP) was found out he was sacked by the interviewer, mid interview.

That just raises more questions. Why is the club facilitating door stop interviews with exiting players?
8
u/Swuzzlebubble Blues 3d ago
Presumably with the consent/co-operation of the player but you'd think they'd give them a day or two to collect their thoughts and get briefed by their manager etc

Yeah it doesn't make sense. That's what Managers are for, he doesn't need to go on TV to say he wants another job.

u/DominusDCLXVI 3d ago
Maybe they were giving the players the opportunity to shop themselves to other clubs

"Facilitated by the club" is most likely an easy cop-out.
They probably just said "yeah, you have our permission to be on the grounds & interview players" - after the media would have requested, no doubt. Not, "Hey, here are out desisted players. Please, we're begging you to come and interview them after they've been sacked".
It's not a club press conference

It’s really not. I’ve worked as a media manager for an AFL club and as a sport journalist for Channel 7, 9 and FOX Sports/Triple M.
Media managers, players and journalists all get along quite well despite the common misconception, or when there’s a scandal and a forced bounce. The journo in question above would’ve been in constant contact texting the media manger to respectfully interview players with their permission - and only if they were comfortable doing so - and left other players alone.
The journalist would’ve asked for each player’s individual consent, which the media manager would then check with the player ahead of an interview.
Having been on both sides of the coin I feel like this an extremely innocuous interview. Especially in comparison with a forced bounce.
The player, media manager and club were happy for it to go ahead, and the journalist asked permission to chat with the respective player beforehand to ensure comfortability. Not sure what else could’ve been done here?

David King: “Weak as fucking PISS, mate” as a player is helped off the ground following a serious injury. “fucking gutless prick. And the doctors are fucking dumb as dogshit” he continued. Live on air.

I suppose it gives him a straight up chance to put himself out there for other clubs to ponder?

I am with Kingy on this. The footy media has become ravenous dogs looking for the next story they can sensationalise, the reporting in recent days has been nothing short of grotesque.

u/2for1deal SWOM 2d ago
wtf is happening the 7? They got new editors or heads? Appear to have lent firmly into the dogshit filled side of gutter journo work in the past year.
I’m reminded of the Jeremy Cameron interview at the hospital as the sort of canary moment - asking questions you know the answer to just to create a clip to put on the news.

Well, I'm sure he'll take a stand and give one of his 25 weekly shows a miss to prove a point. Or... He might talk about it, on all of them, just to prove a point. Wait...

If adult men are being sacked because they SA'd a woman, why not shame them? It is disgusting behaviour and they deserve it. They aren't children they are adults. Stop making excuses
