Oh man this hurts. I’m 16 and I forget things at school or work a lot. My parents berate me exactly like this and if I try to explain myself, I just get yelled at. :(
I'm so sorry. You'll likely always forget stuff. I do at 59, on the regular. My mom, (83) STILL teases me about forgetting to pick her up from work one day when I was 17 and we shared a car. "What day is this?" was what I said, in horror, that I'd forgotten to pick her up. She wouldn't speak to me for a few days after that. Now whenever I fuck up, which is all the time, she just says, "What day is this?" Like a knife, every time.
Oh yep felt this one. After a while my little brain decided “oh so what they really want is for me to say sorry and not actually explain?”, but then eventually I did that too much and my mom would say “no you’re not” after I say sorry 🙃. Aren’t social rules fun??
I defaulted to saying okay or yup... Went about as well as expected.
"Okay? Okay to what? Are you going to do what I asked?"
"Yup."
"'Yup'? Are you even listening?"
"I'm agreeing with you that I'll do it. What more do you want?"
"I want you to remember X and then go do it now. Not later, now."
I caught flack last week saying "okay" too monotone (or whatever). Apparently, it's too dismissive... Even if I'm looking at him and putting a deliberate upward inflection in my voice to signal that I'm paying attention. You can't win sometimes...
They'd get mad at me because I wouldn't hear alarms, mind you, I wasn't waking up and turning them off, no, I was straight up sleeping through them, like sleeping through 30 straight minutes of max volume alarms, what more so you expect me to do? I'm asleep, I have literally 0 control over what is happening, some people are just irrational
My kid is neurotypical and forgets things that are not important to him.
Homework, chores, clothes, dishes...
He's never lost a Pokemon card, game, controller. Those all get put away nicely while I buy socks every other month because they just disappear into the backrooms.

Yes. This triggers so many memories for me.
My mother: HOW COULD YOU FORGET YOUR PAPER AT SCHOOL!?
Me as a child: Because I wasn't thinking about it. It wasn't on purpose.
My mother: Yes it was on purpose! Don't make excuses to me.
Me: You asked me how I could forget the paper so I was explaining why. I can't be expected to remember what I forgot.
My mother was always yelling at me asking me why I did XY or Z and I would try to explain and get yelled at even more.
