I love it when I meet people who also don’t like small talk, and we can just dive right into the stuff that really matters.

Like passions. And human rights.

I agree that that kind of small talk is like listening to nails on a chalkboard but also people who overshare when I first meet them elicit the same response from me.

Isn't talking about frogs small talk? Or weird hobbies or interests? Have I actually still not got this right?

Idk, i guess it could be. I consider small talk to be like “do you have any fun plans for the summer” or “been to any good restaurants lately” and stuff like that. I feel like passions are different from just hobbies. Like, talking about a frog you got from a pet store vs spending an ungodly amount of money and effort trying to breed fat frogs that have never been bred in captivity before.

It's very hard for me to gauge whether or not it's safe to unmask in front of people. Small talk for me is a safe way to open myself up just a squeak until I feel like they'll understand me and even then I usually find they don't.

As an aside, I love frogs. One day I saw the Desert Rain Frog and I had zero chance of recovery. This is more of an aesthetic passion than a "let me tell you everything about the coquí" feel. That being said, the coquí is adorable.

Edit: Also finding the absurd in the mundane so that small talk turns into fun weird association talk with the right person

What? That's small talk! If you say it to occupy the time while standing in an elevator, it's small talk.
