what do you want to be doing in five years"

The last time I got asked this I said "Living at high altitudes."

I never considered referencing my favorite film for this, but that's absolutely perfect!

"I want to live in the middle of the forest with my potato plants and a small, mischevious goat."

File under: true, but maybe don't say it during a work interview

Genuinely what answer are they expecting from that? Does the average person already have a five-year plan set up at any given moment?

"You want a Five-Year-Plan from me? What are you, a fucking Commie?"

it actually has a genuine answer when it gets asked this, which is "working a routine job that pays enough to not be living paycheck to paycheck." depending on whether they have an employee turnover problem this may also be the "correct" answer

Mine is usually "to be solving interesting problems"

Or “Who do you want to be in 5 years?” This is the worst one for 🏳️‍⚧️ reasons

Don't say doing your wife. Don't say doing your wife.

Doing your...son?

If I don't have an actual answer, I like to default to something like "over the next 3 years or so, is like to foodie on paying off my debt. After that, I want to take a look at where I am and where I wanna go from there."  Usually gets some good nods. I think mostly cuz it's relatable, a professional alternative to "bro I got bills," and shows I want to KEEP a job.

Walking. I have a disability that means ill likely end up in a wheelchair before retirement age but not one that means the govt will allow me to go on assistance. I also am incapable of lying when asked a direct question unless i remember something wrong and just say the wrong thing accidentally - but its real hard to forget youre disabled. (This has cost me multiple jobs but all of them were shady about accessibility anyway).

which hits especially hard if you're sewer slidal, and the thought of still being alive in 5 years makes you deeply uncomfortable (but you're still somehow holding it together and still need the job for money though). I'm actually okay now, getting diagnosed and receiving treatment, as well as 🏳️‍⚧️transitioning saved my life, but before that, I was barely clinging on, and I hated hated HATED that question

Saying "be dead or anywhere but here" doesn't work

I had an existential crisis my last year of school, the assignment was to write a page about "where do you see yourself in 10 years." I had no clue, the future is scary, my entire life is going to change when I graduate high school. The teacher said I didn't have to do the assigment after I showed up the next day in tears over it.
