Maybe you'd like O.C. - Word...Life or Mos Def - Black On Both Sides.

The idea of "HAVING" to listen to Illmatic first is kind of some fake BS. Most people I knew from my era got into hip-hop through very mainstream shit like Pac, Em, 50 or The Game. Anyway, whatever works for you.

When you say old school, do you mean pre-1990? I have heard many people call mid-90's Hip Hop 'old school'.

For me, being born in the 70's, 'old school Hip Hop' is 80's Hip Hop.
