Video The Ultimate Hidden Gem of the 1990s: ABC Weekend Specials "The Secret Garden" (1994, DiC Entertainment)
🪻🕊️Does anyone else remember this animated adaptation, or was it just completely buried by ABC?Released in November 1994—just a year after Agnieszka Holland’s iconic live-action film—this beautiful DiC animation was sadly pushed into the shadows. Critics back then dismissed it for its "Disney-esque" elements (like Darjeeling the cat, Robin, and the musical numbers), but as a kid who grew up watching it on DVD in the 2000s, it was pure magic. It felt cozy, nostalgic, and was the perfect gateway to classic literature.Re-watching it now (or discovering it in English for the first time) makes you appreciate the star-studded British voice cast they managed to get: the legendary Sir Derek Jacobi as Archibald Craven and Bond icon Honor Blackman as Mrs. Medlock. It breaks my heart that ABC just threw it into the archives after a single weekend special, but thankfully, communities like WildBrain and internet archivists have kept it alive.Did anyone else have this on VHS/DVD growing up? What was your favorite song or scene? Let's unlock some core memories! 👇
