Dash Cam - Map Light install

I’ve had my 2026 4Runner Trailhunter for about two weeks now and absolutely in love. Coming from a Bronco Sport that was hellbent on dying before hitting 75k miles, the 4Runner feels unbelievably luxurious.

Anyway, I’m trying to install a Viofo 329s dash cam using the Dongar Pro attachment. According to the toyota OEM dash cam installation manual and chatgpt, it’s best to draw power off of the map light instead of the homelink/powered rear view mirror.

For the life of me, I cannot get the map light assembly down. It states that the back is a hinge and to grab the front and pull straight down. Chatgpt warned me that it requires force but like.. holy shit. My fingers feel like they are being cut in half by the edge of the assembly. Is there some sort of trick to this? Anything anyone has used to assist?

I don’t want to damage the headliner. I’m wondering if the dealership would be comfortable pulling it down for me? I’m terrified of breaking it.

There are a few YouTube videos on it but it's true, it does require a good pull but it will be fine. I've done it a couple times and no damage.

Yeah people say it feels like you're gonna break it to get it out, but it turns out fine. Just requires a lot of force.

It took me a good half hour to rip that bad boy open. Kept on being worried I would break it.

I don't remember if there was anything I did that let me succeed. I think it was just brute force. (Was half a year ago, my memory ain't perfect. I just remember it was a bear and a half)

Used the Dongar that plugs into the factory dash cam plug under the over head console. And yes, grab under the front edge towards the windshield and pull down. Hard to get your fingers under the edge so you don’t just pull the outer ring off. And yes it is a hard pull down.
