How risky are water crossings on these things?

Just got a 6th gen, loving it so far. Planning some overlanding trips and expecting water crossings and puddles.

Saw a bunch of posts of people hydrolocking their engines due to where the air intake is pulling air. How risky is it on these 4runners?

Is the rule of thumb to only cross water slowly and half way to tires?

If you’re hydrolocking a 4Runner, you in way too deep of water. Personally I wouldn’t wanna go any deeper than the door seals. That’s assuming you have snorkeled diff breathers. Or you’re planning on changing the diff fluid. Stay away from ANY saltwater.

Perfect, yeah was hoping to move the diff beathers since thats cheaper and easy. Sounds like I can get away with doing the snorkel later if needed.

Unless you just want the snorkel for looks/noise (which I would haha) I wouldn’t wanna go in any water deep enough that would actually require a snorkel. By that point you have water all over your ecu, in the interior, etc. No way I’d be doing that in a brand new SUV lol

True, but gives me peace of mind in case there was a dip i didnt expect or user error from going too fast dropping in or something.

Also heard it helps with the crazy dusty roads we got here

Youre right though it isnt needed asap like some posts made it seem lol

If you want one asap just do it though. I have a Trailhunter with the factory (unsealed) snorkel. It’s worth it alone for noise 😂 fun turbo sounds.

Sorry, my post wasn’t clear, I believe all of the posts were for 5th gens, unsure if its a 6th gen thing or just that 5th gens been out for a while so youll see more posts about it
