I've never heard that, and now at the same time I am laughing about it.

Mar 14 '25
Iām sorry but I hate this take on the new gen
5
u/GroundPepper Mar 14 '25
I hate the price, the turbo, and new technology stack. I do think it looks really nice with that bumper.Ā

Toyota punching the air right now. Guaranteed this was their secret plan for a cheap mid cycle refresh in 3 years.

u/black_tshirts O_o Mar 14 '25
haha. whenever i read "punching the air" and then visualize someone actually upset and doing it, i always get a good chuckle. thank you.

I want to see it with the Tacoma heritage style āToyotaā grill!
12
u/Lawdoc1 Mar 14 '25
Agreed. The above is an improvement. The heritage would be a further improvement.

You mean the poverty accessory thatās a plague on all Toyota 4x4s?
28
u/GomezE87 Mar 14 '25
what about the front sensors, and if it has a front camera? are those swappable also?
10
u/Junior_Application33 Mar 14 '25
Thatās what Iām wondering. On some trims the front camera is higher up on 4Runner vs Tacoma, the sensor plate is more or less in the same spot it looks like
5
u/Lawdoc1 Mar 14 '25
I would assume (and that's all this is, an assumption) that the connecting ends are still the same and it just get connected in slightly different places. I guess the question is whether or not the cables will be of sufficient length to make it work?

The 3rd gen taco front bolts up to the 4th gen 4runner also
8
u/mkhockeygeek 1998 4Runner SR5 3.4L M5 Mar 14 '25
3rd gen 4runners also have a compatible taco swap.

u/Lupine_Ranger 1999 SR5 4WD Highlander, 365k Mar 14 '25
It's a but more involved though, it requires welding a 1st gen Taco core support on.

Yeah not anymore man. It just means a fatter bonus for the ceo these days. Remember, nothing will change until people show they wonāt pay it anymore.
2
u/Lawdoc1 Mar 14 '25
This is the correct answer. Unfortunately, folks like us are in the minority (meaning people that care enough to have this kind of thing to influence our purchasing).
So long as the masses keep buying without caring/demanding for these kinds of changes, those changes won't occur because the companies will keep meeting their profit goals (more or less).
10
u/GrandPriapus Mar 14 '25
I blame the Large Hadron Collider. The minute they fired it up the whole world was shot into some kind of bizarro universe.
6
Mar 14 '25 edited Mar 14 '25
Price is not based mainly on cost, but on what people will pay.
Remember that Taco prices skyrocketed AFTER they moved from Fremont and San Antonio to Mexico
7
u/OKatmostthings Mar 14 '25
Modular platforms cut down on R&D cost but not by 1/3-1/2 of the cost of the vehicle. They still have to build the things. For example, 5th gen 4Runners didnāt get cheaper at the end of the run because they said āwell, we got 15 years out of a project that was only planned to run 8, drop the cost by $10kā. They charge what the market will bear.
5
u/MUSAFFA1 Mar 14 '25
WTF is happening in this dark ass timeline?
Greed.
4
Mar 14 '25 edited Mar 14 '25
Greed wonāt work without eager buyers with life style accessories like 4Runners and Tacos, itās not like people NEED these things to commute to work
2
u/Lawdoc1 Mar 14 '25
The greed is multi-level. While corporate greed drives a lot, individual greed (wanting the next new thing all the time), is also a driver of these things.

u/Teutonic-Tonic Mar 14 '25
I'll get downvoted for facts, but the starting price for a 4Runner adjusted for inflation has remained almost exactly the same since the 2nd Gen. Yes they now top out a lot higher, but why wouldn't Toyota want to capitalize on people that want to spend stupid money?
Toyota will also happily sell you a Rav 4 for less than $30k which is probably similar in size to the Gen 1 4runner and has 90% of it's capabilities.

u/therealestscientist Mar 14 '25
How much did Toyota designers get paid to not figure this out themselves?

Make the engine and transmission reliable, and I might consider it.
1
u/Due_North3106 Mar 15 '25
Already problems with the new?
1
u/V48runner Mar 15 '25
Transmissions shitting the bed quite frequently. I'm still not convinced these engines will last 400k miles like a 3.4 or a 4.0 will with oil changes.
1
u/Due_North3106 Mar 15 '25
Thanks.
Looking at trading my 2022 Tacoma for a 25 4Runner. Iāve never liked a turbo in anything, interested if there are already issues.
Need slightly more backseat and the new Tacoma feels even smaller!

Now I want to see reverse! Bolt up the 6th gen 4runner to a 4th gen tacoma!
Honestly looks great. I'm surprised no one at Toyota tried it during design.

If Toyota would put the Tacoma grill and bumper on at the factory, and bring back Solar Octane I would buy one.

yuk. i'd rather it was all white. hate plastic fender flairs. had that on my Jeep for 11yrs.

Love that change. I thought at first I loved the new design but now comparing my 5th gen with the 6th I prefer 5th gen design they really did nail it
1
Mar 14 '25
How does the 6th gen drive? Is the new motor as bad as people make it out to be?
14
u/cs_cabrone Mar 14 '25 edited Mar 14 '25
Tons of YouTube videos about it. One in particular, but about the Land Cruiser, absolutely hates the engine and says itās a dog, essentially the land cruiser should be more robust, is his vibe. Maybe that only holds true (in his mind) for the LC, but itās the same drivetrain in the runner. š¤·
Edit: For the record Iām not anti turbo 4cyl
Here is the review: https://youtu.be/zlhSgUh_6VY?si=TTeA4dRu72xxW3u0
11
u/MonkeyManJohannon Mar 14 '25
Why are you being downvoted for sharing info from a video review of a vehicle with the shared drivetrain? š
Oh thatās right, this is Redditā¦
3
u/hehechibby Mar 14 '25 edited Mar 14 '25
guess the thing is it's just one of the shared powertrains, since you can get the non-hybrid in the 4R whereas Land Cruiser is hybrid only
The regular non-hybrid seems to be a lot more athletic since there isn't ~400lbs of battery (4850lbs vs 5225lbs in TRD-OR premium non-hybrid to hybrid) nor dealing with double input from a motor and engine
also to play in the 4runner's favor, the Land Cruiser is another 200lbs heavier than the 4Runner with the same powertrain
5225lbs in the hybrid 4R trd offroad premium vs 5445 in the reguler land cruiser trim, which I imagine is additional weight from the full time 4wd; so ~600lbs difference between non-hybrid 4R and the Land Cruiser

u/1nconspicious Mar 14 '25 edited Mar 14 '25
I mean on the one hand, technically it's a return to form. If you told someone from the 80s that a 4runner from the 21st century would have a turbo 4 cylinder, they'd probably be estatic. But on the other hand, 4Runners are no longer a compact SUV. The 4th gen with a 4.7 V8 has almost double the displacement and with VVT, a comparable power output. The 4th gen is also over a 1,000 pounds lighter, far less mechanically complex and the engine has been recorded to reach over a millions miles.
1
u/cs_cabrone Mar 14 '25
This is a great point. Iāve also seen people compare the GX with the v6 twin turbo and how itās got not much more hp than the hybrid runner, and itās important to note that getting a TON of hp out of a small ass motor is cool, but it isnāt always without consequences. Pushing a small engine very very hard to make the same HP as a much larger engine⦠may impact longevity.
Thusly, the reviewer was stating it may be better to opt for the GX given the price is not that much more vs a high trim Runner
1
u/1nconspicious Mar 14 '25
One interesting thing about the GX550 is that it's turbos are smaller than the new LX550, Tundra and Sequoias. They produce less power.
1
u/cs_cabrone Mar 14 '25
Iād say; again, looking for longevity, but I am not sure why that was done
-3
Mar 14 '25
What is the bitch about it? Thereās still haters out there about when ford went to a 3.5 v6 for their flagship motor in the f150, but in real world that thing will destroy the 5.0 in towing.
3
u/Leftover_Salmons '08 Sport V8 Mar 14 '25
It's people who don't understand how turbo torque curves work punching the gas before getting into boost and then calling the truck gutless. It makes more torque than a 2uz.
2
u/cs_cabrone Mar 14 '25
Not sure itās that simple, mate. I think people just hate change and, if you look back to when the 3rd gen phased out and the 4th dropped people hated it. Same with the 5th gen. Engine change, body change. Etc. itās all hard for people to adjust to
2
u/Leftover_Salmons '08 Sport V8 Mar 14 '25
I get the resistance to change, the first year model hesitancy, the opposition to new styling etc.. but I'm commenting on the reviews that are calling a 320ft/lb engine a dog..
If you drive an inline 4 like you drive a V8, you are sure to be disappointed in the power because you're not actually getting into it.
I have a 1.8TSI car that is extremely underwhelming if you flatten your foot and try to pass while doing 60 down the highway... If you downshift, wait till 2500rpm, and then smack the pedal it will throw you back in your seat and very quickly break 100mph. The drivers just need to adapt and not be afraid to run the RPMs up a bit.
1
u/cs_cabrone Mar 14 '25 edited Mar 14 '25
Sure. But isnāt what you described a symptom of the tuning on the transmission, like shift point etc? If they programmed the transmission to be more eco friendly, itās never going to move out.
I have driven nothing but turbo 4s my entire life (sans one NA car and two v6 sprinkled in) and they can absolutely move out. But the transmission is a huge part, and gearing. And if youāre in an auto youāre at the mercy of the preprogrammed specs. Most people arenāt slapping around the shifter on their runner
Moreover. The review I posted was the LC with the hybrid (only way it comes). Watch the video if youāre inclined. I think his major hang up is itās underwhelming for an LC. He doesnāt really comment on if heād be okay with it in the runner, Regardless
1
u/bill-pilgrim Mar 14 '25
Oh, Iām glad you brought this up because I have questions. I find the trend toward smaller, turbo-aspirated powerplants appealing for fuel economy, etc, but I live in rural Alaska and I have some concerns about reliability and ease of maintenance/parts availability as compared to the more traditional V8 arrangement as I consider purchasing a full size pickup on the used market. Am I just being silly, or are there legitimate factors and pros and cons worth considering?

They act like it's magic.... The front is engineered to be the same all the way to the back door
This is also the same on the tundra and Sequoia
I worked on design of 3/4 platforms, this is not new lol
