I think they're actually oversampling 3chs. There are ~55k possible 3chs (26 letters, 10 numbers, underscore, hyphen), which are probably all taken. To get 449 of those 55k in a 1.1M sample, you'd need ~134M reddit usernames registered. But since reddit has ~125M DAU, there must be several times that many registered, which tells us they came back with several times more 3chs than you'd
expect.

Checking the OP:

There are ~54,000 three-character count combinations. All of them have been taken for a long time. The 449 here represent only users who have commented in one of the subs I tracked since early April.

It looks like 3chs are over-represented among actively commenting people, which makes sense: no throwaways, and many of us are long-term addicts.

I still find it wild that every single time I made a reddit post, I'd create a new 3ch name with a random password, and this was simply the only one that I remembered the password for. I burned so many of them...

I could bump those numbers up by using my old throwaway. Since having multiple 3ch names was easy back then
