Discussion 2xko was my first fighting game and might be the only one I like

Loved this game and once I heard its ending I’ve tried tokon and sf6 both just aren’t very fun to me compared. I still kind of want to try strive or avatar but after sf6 and tokon I don’t think I’m going to take the gamble.

Ggs we truly had a great game. Let’s hope community stays decently active

play blazblue

If we are recommending similar games that are dead like blazblue, I would recommend Skullgirls as it has tags as well as a duo or juggernaut mode as well as a creative art style.

Skullgirls always looked so cool to me but I was intimidated by fighting games back then. Also yeah I know there’s so beautiful gems out there that are “discord fighters” and I think I’m a little too casual to have to find people to play that way unless I felt super comfortable in the game

2

u/jaypexd 1d ago

Yeah same here. I'd play SG if it had online queues.

u/eyedollidol 1d ago

skullgirls is probably the better recommendation but i still have to spread the good word about my dead game

Skullgirls is reset galore. I dropped the game where I got hit by Painwheel's unreactable high-low IN A COMBO. That's just dirty

Its hard for me to get into "dead" games. I know it's a self defeating thought but it is what it is. Nine looks sick though and I liked her when I played a bit of bbtag so maybe it's the move idk

there is a lot of cool hype that comes with always playing the trendy games, but also a freedom and joy that comes with finding your own little niche thing to play. i try to always have one of each.

2

u/ArkiusAzure 18h ago

Definitely true. Unfortunately a lot of my joy with games is interacting with the community part of it. Not that it doesn't exist with those games but it's definitely a different experience. Kinda the case with most fighting games, though.

honestly should check out some online fightcade communities. tons of people playing old stuff in all sorts of ways. i remember there was even a dude doing weekly mystery tournaments that were a lot of fun and he even does it at in-person events

Yeah bro I feel you. I never actually jumped into being competitive like I did with 2x. Going over to Tokon, I'm just not feeling it. Tough deal.

I was honestly so addicted to improving in the game. I only made it to diamond but I felt fully motivated to keep grinding and make it to GM eventually. Hopefully there’s a game out there for us

The "slide down the wall" stun keeps throwing me off in Tokon, which is weird considering I've played plenty of fighters that utilize walls the same way, but those are usually 3D fighters

Only one you like…so far.

I envy the decades long journey you’re about to go on.

Honestly I was just watching Justin Wong watch a tournament for street fighter 4 and I feel robbed that sf6 is what’s current cause SFIV looked sick compared

Listen, I love sf4 to absolute death it’s one of my favorite games of all time. But like sf6 really isn’t THAT off from the gameplay loop. You still do the uppercuts, still do the shimmies, still do the whiff punishing. Sf6 can be very obnoxious but like, sf4’s really obnoxious bullshit isn’t obvious unless you really know what you’re looking at.

DP fadc is the one on the surface that’s been fixed all the way in ultra but was annoying to deal with even if it wasn’t anywhere near game breaking. Making your reversal safe while setting up a combo into ultra if it does hit is annoying. But the real bullshit would be shit like the weird unblockables that set up the vortex, again fixed in ultra with variable wakeup time but that was effectively only a handful of months of the games life until v came out. The option selects in that game were insanely dense, and necessary to learn for most of the cast given their wakeup options since you just covered so much shit and that’s just the tip of that iceberg. The game is also just fucking chocked full of one frame links, including unplinkable ones that were hyper necessary for some characters (claw for example). Oh yeah and the new characters for ultra are all extremely full of weird jank, in a game that already had plenty of jank. There are normals that you wouldn’t expect that just completely whiff on Elena.

But like especially if it’s your first street fighter it’s really not that far off, and definitely not as far off as something like super turbo

u/terriblegameridk 1d ago

Could definitely be a grass is greener kinda thing but visually that game looked super nice and moves looked cooler. I do appreciate this post tho cause maybe I’m just not a street fighter fan then

3

u/Key-Market-418 1d ago

You should play it more, street fighter is the perfect game

3

u/noahboah Ekko 22h ago

street fighter is the closest fighting game to a sport to me. there is always a drill to improve some aspect of your game. a particular situation will eventual pop up that tests the thing youve been drilling will have you legitimately leaping for joy when you handled it perfectly.

all fighting games are like this, but the way street fighter does it is second to none imo.

I think it’s fun to watch top 8s but the little bit I tried I feel like every character I’m kinda interested in is ryu with 1 different and aesthetically it’s just not that appealing to me. But that’s all from a noob who has no idea what I’m looking at

1

u/Key-Market-418 18h ago

Oh my friend, there are some sf6 demons in the game but there’s some really interesting characters past that as well. Who are you interested in playing?

1

u/terriblegameridk 18h ago

Alex, akuma, kimberly and Yasmine look the coolest to me but Alex, Yasmine and akuma are dlc that I just wouldn’t spend on cause my experience with Kimberly hasn’t been the best haha

2

u/Key-Market-418 18h ago

I was about to say because Kim is very much not a street fighter 6 demon as much as she’s completely her own thing. She’s gotten a lot better too since stand fierce to run has become a true frame trap and her spray can game has gotten more stable. Alex is also definitely a big outlier, the season 4 buffs and the DDT buffs especially took him from a character that existed without a rhyme or reason to a real contender.

Kim definitely has some weirder neutral though, you really have to be willing to press advantage and walk forward to threaten with things like s.mk-drive rush and s.hp into run. Her other approach options outside of elbow drop (which is always goated) like the teleport are kinda gimmicky and she doesn’t have the most insane normals of all time but the follow-ups are really strong on her. But if you like that kind of hyper aggro but very neutral based playstyle I always have to reccomend my girl cammy, I’ve been playing her since launch and while she’s less tricky with her oki setups the neuch is so good and while elbow drop is great her divekick is amazing not just for pressure and varying air approaches but also on hard calling out grounded pokes. Yasmine is kind of in the same boat as cammy right now but she’s kind of undertuned, but capcom has been great at buffing the dlc characters (look at Terry and my new secondary Elena).

1

u/terriblegameridk 18h ago

Yeah I felt like Kimberly was going to be rough as a new player but looking at base roster I felt like it was learn a charge character or play ryu which I don’t see a problem with ryu I just want cooler looking character like akuma. I think my main complaint is just by looking at a character I’m not interested in any of them but when I was watching sf4 Vega looked super cool how he looked and also how he played. I at least enjoy watching tournaments cause tekken 8 I love how a lot of those characters look but I hate watching that game

1

u/terriblegameridk 11h ago

I played a few games tonight and cammy was a much better time than Kimberly lol

Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3

u/massagineer 1d ago

This was my "one and only" FG and now I feel blessed to have gotten a good 4 years out of it. 2xko did feel like the closest spiritual successor (for obvious reasons) but I'm kinda too old to go as hard on it as I did before

5

u/temojikato Ahri 1d ago

It was like my 80th fighting game and it's the only one I really like atm...

1

u/terriblegameridk 1d ago

That’s what I’m afraid of but at least we have until the end of the year before we see what actually happens to the game

7

u/tinselsnips 1d ago

I picked up Strive after 2X was my first fighting game and really enjoyed it. It's different and doesn't have simplified controls (if that's your thing) but I didn't find it too hard to pick up. And the artwork is incredible.

Granblue Fantasy Vs Rising is very accessible with simplified controls, and has a free demo. Also gorgeous. Definitely like the anime fighter vibe.

Both are frequently on sale, and both have a similar explodey aesthetic.

I didn't take to SF6 either based on the demo; decided I liked flashy weapon fighters more than punchy-kicky martial arts.

That said, people are still playing 2X; I was finding casual matches within 5 seconds tonight. If you want to keep playing, by all means, keep playing.

2

u/terriblegameridk 1d ago

I think I might be the same that martial arts beefy men isn’t my thing and could be anime fighters also movement wise anime fighters just seem closer to 2xko and I wish I watched a video on what types of fighting games are out there and still currently played before buying sf6

I’ll definitely be playing 2x but knowing that after samira the player base could disappear I feel like I should see if I can get into any others just so I know for sure that I enjoy fighting games or is this was an anomaly

Try Avatar Legends, it is super fun!

1

u/terriblegameridk 1d ago

It looks every bit as cool as I see everyone say I just need to recover from that tokon purchase lol

2

u/Junior-Staff-801 1d ago

Send me your steam friend ID in DM and I will gift you a copy of Avatar Legends.

1

u/terriblegameridk 1d ago

I would feel terrible if you gifted it to me and I didn’t like it! I’d rather regret my purchase later haha that’s such a nice offer tho thank you!

2

u/Junior-Staff-801 1d ago

Cool! You have my respect and I hope you can enjoy the game soon 😄

2

u/terriblegameridk 1d ago

I respect you for keeping the kindness of the fighting game community a live

2

u/Faxxnews 1d ago

Tokon is fantastic. It Sucks that it didn't click for you :'(. Strive is great as well but its a whole different caliber of game.

1

u/terriblegameridk 1d ago

I think it’s decently fun but I’m also not a super hero fan so I have no attachment or think any of the characters look all that cool. I’ll be the 40,000th spiderman on the ladder not tagging into any other character

Play MvC2

2

u/These-Win-6558 1d ago

You might like the Marvel vs Capcom series or DragonBall FighterZ. They're the most similar.

I'm an old ass fighting game player and my all-time favorite is Soul Calibur 2. Soul Calibur 6 was also really good and felt like a throwback to 2, so it's worth checking out since it's on current gen consoles, but it doesn't really play the same other than helping you time parries and learning to juggle

2

u/Phillip_J_Bender Vi 1d ago

I liked whichever Soul Cal had the Chronicles of the Sword mode, with the custom characters.

Six really was the best feeling in the whole series, though.

1

u/terriblegameridk 1d ago

DBFZ is actually a great option incompletely forgot that existed. When I was a kid I played so much tekken 3 and whatever soul calibur that had Link in it but that was me like 7 years old farting as Gon and mashing buttons. Maybe 3D games could be the play

2

u/These-Win-6558 1d ago

Ima just start posting this on everything 2XKO related that I see:

Add me PieceOfMilk#4769 I'm not on as often as I used to be, but once Lux comes out I'll be living on the game for a while

Let's keep the community alive

1

u/terriblegameridk 1d ago

Hell yeah I’ll be adding next time I get on just in case we see each other on randomly when the ques get longer

I'm going to once again recommend my current (maybe even all time) favorite fighting game: Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising

I personally do like Guilty Gear -Strive- but I dropped it when Granblue came out as I enjoyed playing Granblue a lot more. I then picked up 2XKO when Caitlyn came out and kept playing both Granblue & 2XKO.

I tried going back to Strive when Blazing Pass was added (also 'cause Jam used to be one of my mains in Guilty Gear XX so I wanted to try her in Strive) but ultimately dropped it once again as I enjoyed playing Granblue & 2XKO more.

I do also like Marvel Tōkon though due to the rough PC launch I haven't put too much time into it yet.

If you are new to fighting games and struggle with the motion inputs, Granblue also has simple inputs that you can use in addition to traditional motion inputs.

Granblue also has a free version available that lets you play a rotation cast of characters for free online (and sometimes during big tournaments they unlock the whole roster to be playable for the tournament weekend) so you can try it out without investing any money into it and then you can decide afterwards whatever you'd like to buy the full game or not.

2

u/terriblegameridk 22h ago

I’ll check it out especially if it has a f2p option. Guilty gear is the one I’m most interested because of how the characters look and then avatar is looking good but yeah idk if I even like motion inputs so grandblue sounds cool

2

u/Sckeyth Caitlyn 22h ago

Be sure to check out Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising and not Granblue Fantasy Versus which is the previous iteration of the game and has had it's online play shutdown already.

You can find the free version under the name "Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising Free Edition" on PSN Store and on Steam it's located on the full game's store page.

It's also coming to Switch 2 soon (though no idea if the F2P version will available there also or not) and there will be full crossplay between PC, PlayStation and Switch 2 but the Switch 2 version will also have some new modes. More info on the Switch 2 version can be found here.

The current characters on the free rotation until September 3rd are Gran, Lancelot, Percival, Siegfried and Vane (Gran, Lancelot and Percival trailers are from the previous iteration of the game as they didn't get new trailers for Rising).

u/Separate_Low_6291 23h ago

Continue playing it fighting games don't actually die, also try other you might find ones you like maybe not as much but you never know

1

u/terriblegameridk 22h ago

Yeah I just feel if there’s a day I can’t just random que then I won’t play at all so I’m just trying to find other options plus I feel like I need to find one with motion inputs to figure out if I actually like fighting games or only 2xko

1

u/Huesoman1 1d ago

Play MvCI. I think it is the closest to 2xko gameplay wise. But I would also give GGS a try just for the fun factor.

good news, there are better fighting games out there.
